Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many daughters does Tevye have? (I'll give you a hint: it isn't the same number as the amount in the musical.)

Answer: 7

In the musical 'Fiddler on the Roof', Tevye has five. In the book, he has seven- the five mentioned in 'Fiddler' and two more, Teibl and one more whose name is never mentioned.
2. How are the stories written?

Answer: They are written as if Tevye was telling a story to Sholem Aleichem.

Everyone of the stories starts out with Tevye greeting his good friend, Sholem Aleichem.
3. What is Shprintze's fate?

Answer: She drowns herself.

She and a rich boy fell in love, but the uncle of the rich boy assumed that Tevye was only getting Shprintze to marry the rich boy for the money, so the uncle denied the marriage. The boy left town, Shprintze threw herself into the river.
4. In the BOOK, who leaves for America with Tevye?

Answer: Tzeitel and Chava

Golde is dead, Bielke's moved to America, The Fiddler doesn't exist, and Motel is also dead. Chava is accepted back into the family after her Russian husband beat her.
5. Which characters die in the story?

Answer: Golde, Motel, Shprintze

Motel suddenly dies of sickness, Golde dies of old age and Shprintze, as earlier mentioned, throws herself in the river.
6. Two main characters of the play, ____ and ____, are not in the book. Who are they?

Answer: Yente and Fiddler

The Fiddler was made up for the play, and Yente replaced the male matchmaker, Efrayim, in the play.
7. The matchmaker in the book is ___ (male or female)?

Answer: male

As I said before, Yente replaced Efrayim, the male matchmaker, as the matchmaker in the play. I must admit, if the matchmaker in the play had been a guy, it wouldn't be nearly as good. Right? Of course right.
8. Which cousin of Tevye puts Tevye's newly inherited fortune in jeopardy?

Answer: Nochem

Nochem jeopardized their money and that's how he became Nochem the Beggar. You might know him from 'Fiddler on the Roof.'
9. Does Tevye live in Anatefkah in the book?

Answer: No

He lives between Anatefkah and a few other towns. He's the only Jew in the small area he lives in.
10. What happens to Bielke?

Answer: She gets an arranged marriage with a rich man who loses his fortune and forces them to move to America where they sew socks for a living.

That's the reason why arranged marriages should not be allowed.
