Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start out in the least pleasant location, where few would dare to venture. We're out on the Scottish heath with four characters, but who doesn't belong?

Answer: Lady Macbeth

Both Macbeth and Banquo meet the witches on the heath early in the play "Macbeth", where the fateful prophecy is given to them. Hecate is the queen of the witches who approaches her minions on their turf to berate them for going rogue and cursing people without her approval.
2. Still in northern Europe, let's hit up Elsinore in Denmark - after all, they'll teach you to drink deep ere you depart! Who would we never meet at the Elsinore castle?

Answer: Imogen

Imogen is the heroine of "Cymbeline," and thus never ends up in the Danish castle of Elsinore. However, the other three - Hamlet, Horatio, and Gertrude - all spend the vast majority (or all) of "Hamlet" confined to the castle.
3. It's time for a drink. Who would we not meet in Mistress Quickly's tavern?

Answer: Hotspur

The Quickly tavern is the hangout of Prince Hal, Falstaff, and the gang of rowdy bar-goers (including Poins as well as Bardolph, Pistol, Nym, and others) from the Henry IV plays. Hotspur (the nickname of Henry Percy, son of the Earl of Northumberland) is a straight-laced soldier, and does not hang out with ruffians in bars like the prince does.
4. My goodness, this is exciting! A quick hop to Southern Europe puts us down right in the middle of the battle of Philippi! Who could we not meet here?

Answer: Pompey

Pompey, defeated and dead before the opening of "Julius Caesar," does not appear during the Philippi battle that makes up its finale. Brutus and Cassius fight Octavius and Antony in this battle, and they lose, leading to their suicides. Octavius ends the play with a gesture of respect for his fallen enemy after the battle.
5. A slightly calmer locale this time - we're out mingling in the forest of Arden. Who does not ever visit this place?

Answer: Miranda

Miranda was stranded with her father on an unnamed island in "The Tempest". Rosalind, Celia, and Orlando all hang out in exile/flight in the forest of Arden, where people disliked and hunted by the court of Duke Frederick find refuge, in "As You Like It".
6. Now we're in the apparently bear-overrun nation of Bohemia - who would we not meet there?

Answer: Leontes

In "The Winter's Tale," Leontes is the king of Sicilia, who banishes his infant daughter Perdita to Bohemia. After she is abandoned there, she is raised to maturity and meets Florizel, son of Polixenes, king of Bohemia. Leontes never visits Bohemia, which makes sense given his mistreatment of his family and his Bohemian friends.
7. After an eventful, shipwreck-filled voyage, we make it to Tyre. Who does not ever find themselves there?

Answer: Thaisa

Pericles is the Prince of Tyre, as per the title of this bizarre late play, and his main advisor in his native land is Helicanus. Thaliard is an assassin sent by Antiochus (appropriately of Antioch) who makes it to Tyre before Pericles escapes. Thaisa, Pericles' wife, never actually makes it back to her husband's hometown!
8. After yet another shipwreck, we find ourselves in Illyria - which comedic character is not a part of this delightful location?

Answer: Beatrice

Beatrice is the heroine of "Much Ado About Nothing," while Orsino, Viola, and Olivia are all parts of "Twelfth Night," which takes place in Illyria. Orsino and Olivia are both nobility and native of Illyria, while Viola shipwrecks there at the start of the play.
9. A lovely French locale now - who is not found in Roussillon?

Answer: Diana

Helena, the main character of "All's Well That Ends Well," is a ward of the Countess of Roussillon at the start of the play. She loves Bertram, the Countess' son, and eventually marries him against his will. Bertram meets Diana (and tries to seduce her) while in Italy, but Diana does not visit Roussillon herself.
10. And now for a location found in more than one play - who could not be in the ever-popular Venice no matter what?

Answer: Isabella

Isabella, heroine of "Measure for Measure," is a resident of Vienna, not Venice. However, both "Othello" and "Merchant of Venice" take place (in part) in that lovely city, so Desdemona (of "Othello") and Portia/Bassanio (of "Merchant") all do spend time there at various points in their plays.
