Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which real town appeared in many of her books as "Priorsford"?

Answer: Peebles

O. Douglas was born, lived, and died in Peebles and used it extensively as a location for her stories.
2. Who was Jane, after whom "Jane's Parlour" is named, in the story of the same name?

Answer: Nobody knows

We never find out who 'Jane' was; the room has been known as 'Jane's Parlour' for as long as anyone can recall.
3. In "Penny Plain", what is Mhor's real name?

Answer: Gervaise

Gervaise Taunton or 'Mhor' is technically no relation to Jean and her brothers but is a much loved member of the family nontheless and is always treated as another brother. He is their stepmother's son by her second husband and thus not actually related by blood at all.
4. What is the name of the house in "The Place That Is Our Own"?

Answer: Glenbucho Place

The only thing "wee Archibauld" needs to make Glenbucho Place perfect would be an elephant, but he settles for his 'bunnies' instead.
5. Which of O. Douglas's books was her autobiography?

Answer: Farewell to Priorsford

"Farewell to Priorsford" was published posthumously in 1950. O. Douglas was the nom de plume of Anna Buchan, sister of John Buchan who wrote "The Thirty-Nine Steps". The autobiographical memoir "Unforgettable, Unforgotten" was published in 1945 using her real name.
6. In "Pink Sugar" what does Kirsty tell the Lord of the Manor he should be doing to celebrate being alive instead of feeling sorry for himself because he was wounded in the war?

Answer: Thanking God fasting

His leg was badly injured during WWI and he was wallowing in self pity when Kirsty pointed out that at least he was alive and had come home unlike millions who had died.
7. In "The Place That Is Our Own", where did Gideon Veitch go when he emigrated?

Answer: Canada

He works on a lumber mill in Canada.
8. In "Taken By The Hand", what is the name of the Sellars' cottage in Oxlip?

Answer: Twixt Bears

The origins of the name "Twixt Bears" has been lost in time although the Village Inn also has 'Bears' in its name.
9. How does Christopher propose to Beatrice in "Taken By The Hand"?

Answer: By Telegram

Beatrice goes to India, and Christopher is afraid she will meet and marry someone else, so he sends a telegram to ask her to marry him.
10. What does Eliza's Father do for a living in "Eliza For Common"?

Answer: Vicar

He is a vicar and Eliza blames his job for the family being poor and having to "do good works".
