Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Henty's book "Beric the Briton", which group of Britons does Beric belong to?

Answer: Sarci

Beric is the chief of the Sarci, a tribe of Britons. They in turn are ruled by King Prasutagus, who dies at the beginning of the book. Beric trains the Sarci in the Roman mode of fighting, and wins some notable victories. When the Romans defeat Beric, he commences guerrilla warfare with them, and has many more hairs-breadth escapes.
2. In the book "Beric the Briton", does Beric marry in the end? If yes, who?

Answer: Yes, Emilia

Finding that many readers are interested in such matters, I have ventured to add this question. Although Berenice loved Beric, and they grew up together, he went to Rome and fell in love with Emilia. Emilia loved him ever since he fought and overcame a lion barehanded.
3. In one of the books published in 1887, "The Young Carthaginian", does the protagonist, Malchus, accompany Hannibal from the beginning of the book until Hannibal's suicide?

Answer: No, he leaves to live with a Germanic tribe

Having fallen in love, which happens to most of the protagonists in Henty's books, Malchus goes and lives with his wife's people. He leaves Hannibal camping before Rome because he saved his love when he is a slave in Rome.
4. "The Young Carthaginian" shows readers that Malchus' valiant and loyal servant throughout the book is who?

Answer: Nessus

Nessus is a Numidian, and saves Malchus' life numerous times. He is like Samwise Gamgee in "Lord of the Rings", only Sam was more Frodo's companion than servant. As Frodo would never have succeeded without Sam, so Malchus would never have lived without Nessus.
5. What are the names of the four main boys in "Under Drake's Flag"?

Answer: Ned, Reuben, Gerald, Tom

The four boys go through many adventures, all of which feature Ned. They signed on as cabin boys on the Golden Hind, under Captain Francis Drake, who was attempting to circumnavigate the globe. The boys masquerade as heathen idols, are captured by the infamous Spanish Inquisition, and stage a slave revolt against the Spanish on a remote island.
6. Which boy in "Under Drake's Flag" was nicknamed "The Otter" for his swimming abilities?

Answer: Ned

Ned swims extremely well, and saves Tom's life when he, lagging behind the others, is nearly bitten by a shark. Ned in turn owes his life to a spear and his swimming abilities. He also saves a pretty girl's life, but that is an exciting episode that I can't give away.
7. What was the name of the protagonist in "A Knight of the White Cross"?

Answer: Gervaise Tresham

Yes, Gervaise is the young knight of St. John who goes through all the enthralling adventures. His best friend is Ralph Harcourt. I coined the other names from different characters in Henty's other books, which, by the way, are thrillers and good history lessons artfully combined.
8. Following from the previous question about "A Knight of the White Cross", why does Gervaise voluntarily stay in captivity for longer than was necessary?

Answer: all of these reasons

Claudia, Gervaise's love, gives him a necklace as her token. A slave trader captures Gervaise and steals it. Gervaise refuses the offer by one of his friends to pay his ransom because he wants the necklace and satisfaction. In the end, well, it spoils the book to say what happened. You can guess.
9. In my favorite Henty book, "In Freedom's Cause", why does Archie marry the daughter of the knight who stole his lands?

Answer: He didn't know who she was until he proposed

Archie was saved by a "Marjory", who he thinks is a MacDougal. He loves her, and argues when the king, Robert the Bruce, offers to wed him to Mary Kerr, the daughter of Sir John Kerr, who stole his lands and killed his father. Archie proposes to Marjory, and is shocked when she tells him that she is Mary Kerr, his mistake being from the fact that she was in the company of the tribe of MacDougals, who called her "Mistress Marjory".
10. Who is Archie's revered leader from the beginning to the middle of the book "In Freedom's Cause"?

Answer: Sir William Wallace

Wallace led his band, including Archie, on many adventures. Robert the Bruce later became Archie's leader. Balliol was king in name of Scotland, but Archie never knew him. Comyn was a treacherous noble. Sir Archibald Forbes, Archie's real name, goes through some of Wallace's adventures with him, including meeting his wife, whom few knew existed.
