Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Gandalf say happens to a mortal who keeps one of the Great Rings?

Answer: He fades

Early on in the book, when Gandalf has revealed that Bilbo's ring is the One Ring, he tells Frodo of the risks of using this instrument of power. Gandalf states: 'If he often uses the Ring to make himself invisible, he fades: he becomes in the end invisible permanently.' We later find out that this is what happened to the nine mortal men given rings of power, who became the Ringwraiths.
2. When Smeagol asks Deagol to give him the Ring, what does Deagol say?

Answer: 'I have given you a present already'

Smeagol says to Deagol: 'It's my birthday, my love, and I wants it', to which Deagol replies: 'I don't care. I have given you a present already.'

This is an extremely important moment in the book, when Smeagol sees the Ring for the first time and immediately becomes obsessed by it. So obsessed, in fact, that he strangles his best friend Deagol to have it for his own.
3. What does Frodo state would be good for the inhabitants of the Shire?

Answer: An earthquake or an invasion of dragons

Frodo's love for the Shire continues throughout the books, and this quote occurs when he first leaves his home, unaware of quite what lays ahead of him. Frodo says: 'There have been times when I thought the inhabitants too stupid and dull for words, and have felt that an earthquake or an invasion of dragons might be good for them.'
4. What is the first Ringwraith sighted said to be doing?

Answer: Sniffing

The Hobbits' first encounter with the Ringwraiths (or black riders) takes place not long after they have left the Shire, and signals that the dark forces of Sauron are far too close to home for comfort. The Ringwraith is described: 'From inside the hood came a noise as of someone sniffing to catch an elusive scent.'
5. What names does Frodo cry out when confronted with the Ringwraiths on Weathertop?

Answer: Elbereth! Gilthoniel!

On Weathertop, Frodo is confronted with the Ringwraiths and, while wearing the Ring, he sees them in their true forms. The Ringwraiths attack him, and the sword stab to his shoulder means he needs to be carried by an elf quickly to Rivendell.
'At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard himself crying aloud: O Elbereth! Gilthomiel!'
6. Why is the Fellowship made of Nine individuals?

Answer: To be set against the Nine Riders

The forming of the Fellowship takes place in Rivendell, with Elrond presiding over all. The Nine - Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf - are brought together for the first time, deciding that they will be the ones to take the Ring after a lengthy discussion.

Elrond says: 'The Company of the Ring shall be Nine; and the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil.'
7. Bilbo gives Frodo a shirt of mithril before he leaves Rivendell. What comes with the shirt?

Answer: A belt of pearl and silver

The mithril shirt is described as shining 'like moonlit silver, and was studded with white gems. With it was a belt of pearl and silver.' It is thanks to this glorious creation made by the dwarves that Frodo's life is spared in the Mines of Moria later in the book.
8. What is the last sentence written in the book found by Gandalf in the Mines of Moria?

Answer: They are coming

Gandalf reads aloud from the book, and states: 'The last thing written in a trailing scrawl of elf letters: they are coming. There is nothing more.'

It is at this moment that the Fellowship first begin to truly regret their decision to enter the Mines of Moria. They realise now that there are things hidden in the darkness, and a sense of foreboding settles, telling us that maybe not all Nine members of the Fellowship will make it out alive.
9. What does Legolas say when the Nine are confronted with the Balrog in Moria?

Answer: A Balrog! A Balrog is come!

'Ai! Ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'

The Balrog, a terrifying creature wreathed in smoke and fire, is the death of Gandalf. It almost entirely destroys the little hope the Fellowship are holding onto. They have lost their leader, and their optimism is fading.
10. Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel are described as having no sign of age upon them, except for in this one feature. What is it?

Answer: The depths of their eyes

'No sign of age was upon them, unless it were in the depths of their eyes; for these were as keen as lances in the starlight, and yet profound, the wells of deep memory.'

Galadriel shows Frodo the Mirror, in which he sees the Eye of Sauron. It is soon after this that Frodo breaks from the rest of the Fellowship and makes his decision to head for Mordor alone.
