quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First is an easy one: In the book, the first Hobbit outside the prologue (Chapter: "A Long-Expected Party") is Bilbo Baggins. Who is the first Hobbit seen in the movie after the title "Lord of the Rings" is displayed?

Answer: Bilbo Baggins

Yes, it is Bilbo. The words "Lord of the Rings" come before we even see any other picture, while Galadriel is speaking. Bilbo comes when she says "Then something happened the Ring did not intend."
2. When they are first encountered in the movie, Merry and Pippin are raiding Gandalf's Fireworks; what is Merry doing AFTER the party when we first encounter him in the book?

Answer: He's with Frodo at Bag End, keeping an 'eye on things'

Merry is at Bag End after the party when the Sackville-Bagginses are complaining to Frodo when they are caught stealing spoons. During this scene, a rather cute little scene occurs where Lobelia tries to insult Frodo by telling him he's a Brandybuck, right in front of Merry. I never appreciated that until I'd seen the movie, and it wasn't there.
3. Gimli, Son of Gloin, is the one and only Dwarf in the Fellowship. In the book Elrond sends him on the quest on behalf of the Dwarves. In the movie, he volunteers. What does Gimli say when he volunteers?

Answer: "...and my axe."

Well, he could volunteer his own axe, especially after he broke someone else's while trying to destroy the Ring with it! It seems like Gimli actually volunteers just to annoy Legolas, who volunteered before him. He does receive a particularly Elven dirty look for his trouble. Beginning of a beautiful friendship? It'd seem so.
4. Boromir is against going into two places in the book, both of which he had little hesitation about going to until they arrived in the movie; what are these places?

Answer: Lothlorien and Moria

Cirith Ungol is the second tower in "Two Towers" (by the DVD special feature's reckoning anyway), Mirkwood is where Legolas is from (seriously, would you be scared to go to a place that produces Legolas?), Tol Brandir is where he tries to take the Ring; Lothlorien was one of them, though in the movie Gimli complains more than he does- in the book Boromir wishes for a "plainer road".

Helm's Deep is never mentioned until "Two Towers", and it is doubtful that Boromir would complain about Minas Tirith, considering that is where he lives. Moria, well, I wouldn't want to go there either...
5. In the movie, Pippin claims Frodo is his Second Cousin twice removed on his mother's side. Going by the appendices, what relationship is Pippin to Frodo and which direct relation do they share?

Answer: Balbo Baggins, making him Frodo's Second Cousin, once removed, on his mother's side

Okay, the one was obviously wrong; if he shared the blood of Gloin, he'd be Gimli's brother, and not a Hobbit. By the blood of Aldagrim Took, Pippin is Merry's cousin. By the blood of Gorbadock Brandybuck, Frodo is Merry's third cousin. All relationships were calculated with a relationship calculator (yes, I have far too much time). Frodo is also Pip's third cousin, once removed, on his father's side. Neat little hoop ha?
6. In the book and the movie respectively, who is the first Hobbit Gandalf speaks to?

Answer: Movie: Frodo Baggins, Book: Bilbo Baggins

In the book, Gandalf takes the fireworks through the town and then goes straight into Bag End.
7. In the movie, the first sentence spoken by Aragorn is "You draw far too much attention to yourself"; What is the first thing said by Aragorn in the book?

Answer: "I am called Strider"

"You draw far too much attention to yourself" was the movie
"They are the Nazgul, Ringwraiths" WAS in the movie, and was not his first line.
"I read the signs alright" was his first line in the book of "Two Towers"
8. Master Samwise Gamgee is first mentioned in the book in the first chapter of "Fellowship" and is talking to his father. Later (some time later, a good twenty years in the book), he is caught "cutting the grass." In the movie, what did he say when he was caught by Gandalf?

Answer: "I wasn't droppin' no Eaves, sir!"

They are all Sam quotes, but only one was right! "I think I'll have another Ale" was his first line in the movie, "Trust a Brandybuck and a Took!" was said after the Farmer Maggot incident. "He's not going anywhere without me" was said by Sam after he burst into the council of Elrond.
9. Frodo and Sam were good friends at the beginning of the movie. Earlier in the book, which of the fellowship Hobbits was Frodo friends with?

Answer: Merry

I helped you with this one earlier, if you look to Question 2. Merry is with Frodo at Bag End, looking after things.
10. When Sam loses Frodo in the corn field in the movie, he quotes Gandalf; in the book, who does Sam often quote?

Answer: Hamfast "Gaffer" Gamgee

Yep, poor old Sam cops it whole hog from the Gaffer, and continually downs himself with the Gaffer's words. It gets worse by "Two Towers".
11. Aragorn is pretty handy with that Athelas plant. He uses it twice in the book, once where Frodo is stabbed by the Morgal Blade, the second after Moria. In the movie, he does something to the Athelas just before he uses it on Frodo- what was it?

Answer: Chewed on it

He chewed on it; we see him take it out of his mouth when Arwen arrives and says "He's fading". Note, you are forgiven if you put picked it, because he did, but he then he chewed it.
12. What is Boromir's last line in both the movie and the "Fellowship of the Ring" book?

Answer: Book: "I do not know!" Movie "I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king"

All right, I'm being mean, but I had to find something that wasn't "Which book does Boromir die in?". His last spoken line AT ALL in the trilogy was "I have failed", spoken in "Two Towers", his last line in "Fellowship of the Ring" was "I don't know". "Farewell Aragorn", he says in the book right before he says "I have failed". "Let's hunt some Orc" was Aragorn's last line in the movie. "I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king," was his last line in the movie, and thus the movie trilogy.
13. Which of these, in both the book and movie, are NOT said by or regarding Peregrin Took?

Answer: Book: "Morning, Longshanks, off early?" Movie: "Let him go, or I'll have you Longshanks!"

Book: "Morning, Longshanks, off early?" Said by: Bill Ferny Regarding: Aragorn.
Movie: "Let him go, or I'll have you Longshanks!" Said by: Sam Regarding: Frodo and Aragorn. That's a darn funny line, in my opinion.
Book: "Knock on the doors with your head" Said By: Gandalf Regarding: Peregrin asking what they should do at the doors of Moria.
Movie: "Throw yourself in next time and rid us of your stupidity"
Said by: Gandalf Regarding: Pippin's sending a dead Dwarf and a bucket down the Well in Moria. You really have to feel sorry for Pip- Gandalf is really mean to him.
Book: "Best beer in the East Farthing." Said By: Pippin Regarding: the possibility of going to the "Golden Perch" in Stock
Movie: "I don't think he knows about second breakfast" Said by: Merry Regarding: Aragon's reaction to Pip's statement "We've had one, yes, but what about second Breakfast?" Hobbits have a pretty hefty eating cycle, do they have time for anything else?
Book: "We need some intelligence in the party" Said By: Pippin Regarding: Why he should be included in the Fellowship.
Movie: "Well that rules you out..." Said by: Merry regarding; Pippin's insisting that "they needed people of intelligence on this mission, quest, thing." Pip's a really funny guy, don't you agree?
14. Frodo uses the name Underhill when he is in Bree. Pippin is the first to use Frodo's real name in the film. Who is first in Bree to refer to Frodo by the name Baggins?

Answer: Strider

It was Strider who first called Frodo "Mr. Baggins" in Bree, right after he had taken the Ring off. In contrast to the movie, however, Frodo knew who Strider was before he put on the Ring.
15. Gimli claims in the movie that Balin is his cousin, which is partially true. Balin is his father's cousin and is therefore Gimli's second cousin. Going by the family tree in the end of Appendix A, which of the following statements about Gimli is true?

Answer: Gimli's grandfather's name was Groin

His grandfather has a strange name, especially when there is no way of making an accented o on my keyboard!
16. In the book, Legolas sings the song of Nimrodel, but does not sing at all in the movie. In the movie (theatrical edition), Legolas never speaks in his native tongue. Is he ever directly quoted as speaking an Elven sentence (though a short one!) in the book?

Answer: Yes

Hands up if you thought I forgot him!
Legolas takes quite a long while to be quoted in Elven, but he is first quoted in the chapter "The Great River" as saying "Elbereth Gilthoniel!"; this is the only directly quoted Elven sentence he speaks before "Two Towers". Ok, I know this is a little bit rough, but if someone said "Joe Smith" it would be considered English, wouldn't it?
17. Though it is never shown in the movie, what gift does Merry receive from Galadriel?

Answer: A silver belt with golden flower buckle, same as Pip

Galadriel is only told as giving one gift to the party in the movie, just Frodo's small phial of light from " Earendil, their most beloved star". Sam receives magical dirt; Boromir, a Gold belt; Aragorn receives a sheath for his newly repaired sword, and Merry and Pippin, silver belts with golden flower buckles.
18. Who helps Gandalf to figure out the puzzle of Moria's gate in both the book and the movie?

Answer: Movie: Frodo. Book: Merry is on the right track, but Gandalf figures it out on his own

Gandalf comes by the answer in a sudden revelation in the book, but Merry, he says, was on the right track when he asks "what could it mean by 'speak, friend, and enter'?" Frodo figures it all out by himself in the movie, but doesn't know the Elvish word for friend.
Am I the only one that thinks Moria in the movie is a little illogical? (Think about who is in the party that Frodo does not ask and you understand)
19. Legolas' presence at the council of Elrond was never explained in the movie; according to the book, why was he there?

Answer: To bring a message from his father, the King of Northern Mirkwood

He went to tell the council that Gollum had escaped while they let him climb a tree in Mirkwood. It was explained early in the chapter "Council of Elrond". Gimli had come to the council with his father, Gloin, and Boromir had come to explain a dream he and his brother were having. They never mentioned a brother of Legolas (What would the world be like with two of him?).
20. Last of all, a little off-track question for you: Which characters in the movie link "Lord of the Rings" with James Bond?

Answer: Boromir and Saruman

Both of the actors who play Boromir and Sarumon were in James Bond movies, and they both played villains. Sean Bean played Alec Trevelyan in "Goldeneye", and Christopher Lee played Francisco Scaramanga in "The Man With The Golden Gun".
And so ends the quiz, cheerie-o-then!
