Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The journey starts at Bag End, where Frodo, Sam, and Pippin set out for Frodo's new house. Which direction do the hobbits go?

Answer: East

The hobbits go east towards Buckland and Frodo's new home. However, Frodo plans to tell the others of his true quest: to bring the Ring to Bree and meet Gandalf there. Along the way, they meet a Black Rider (Ringwraith) and barely avoid him.
2. On their way to the Buckleberry Ferry which will take them toward Bree, the three hobbits decide to take a short cut and end up where?

Answer: Farmer Maggot's house

At Farmer Maggot's home, the hobbits are ambushed by his three dogs: Grip, Fang, and Wolf. The farmer rescues them and invites them to dinner, where they feast on delicious mushrooms. They then leave and meet up with Merry Brandybuck, who joins them and leads them to the ferry.
3. After the hobbits arrive in Bree, where they stay at a certain inn which was recommended to them. What is the name of this inn?

Answer: The Prancing Pony

Here at the inn, the hobbits meet a Ranger named Strider (who is really Aragorn) and agree to let him lead them to Rivendell. They are attacked in the night at the inn, but escape in the morning with Bill the pony.
4. Aragorn and the hobbits head to the hill called Weathertop next to make a stand against the Nazgul. This hill also has another name. What is it?

Answer: Amon Sul

At Weathertop/Amon Sul, the five-some fight off the Nazgul, but not before Frodo is stabbed by the Witch-king. They make a mad dash to Rivendell, and are assisted by the Elf lord Glorfindel. They barely make it, and spend a while to rest and regroup for the next stage.

They are joined by Gandalf the wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the dwarf, and Boromir son of Denethor the steward of Gondor.
5. The newly formed "Fellowship of the Ring" heads south to try to cross the Misty Mountains. They decide to go over the largest of three mountains, Caradhras. What are the nicknames for the other two mountains?

Answer: Silvertine and Cloudyhead

Silvertine and Cloudyhead are really named Celebdil the White and Fanuidhol the Grey, respectively. Caradhras's nickname is Redhorn. On the other side of the mountains is the Dimrill Dale, a valley well known to the Dwarves. However, the Fellowship does not make it over because of the amount of snow, and they are forced to pick another path.
6. Following the failed passage of Caradhras, the Fellowship makes its way to the Mines of Moria, an old Dwarf stronghold. After working their way through the mines for a while, Gandalf is forced to decide between three paths, one to the left, one in the middle, and one to the right. Which path will he choose?

Answer: Right

Quoting the book, "I do not like the feel of the middle way; and I do not like the smell of the left-hand way...." They march through the mines, having many close calls. Finally, they make their way out, but not before losing Gandalf at the bridge of Khazad-dum. Aragorn takes over the reins of leadership, and they continue onward.
7. Aragorn pushes the Fellowship forwards, and they make it to a fabled Elven stronghold. This stronghold has a clear river running through it, and is filled with trees. What is it?

Answer: Lothlorien

Lothlorien was founded in the First Age by Galadriel and Celeborn, High-Elves. They planted special mallorn trees, so the Elves could live on flets in the trees. It has remained a steadfast against many threats under their leadership. Will the Fellowship be accepted there?
8. The Fellowship is admitted, and they are taken by an Elf named Haldir to the capital of the woods, a great city. What is the name of this city?

Answer: Caras Galadon

Caras Galadon is ruled by the great Galadriel and Celeborn. It is a city of huge flets (or platforms) on mallorn trees. The Fellowship finds food and rest here, and Frodo finds wise advice. They eventually have to leave, though, and the Elves give them boats to their next destination.
9. The Fellowship now sails south on the Great River. Their journey will be cut short, though. Where will their voyage end?

Answer: The Falls of Rauros

Here the book prepares to end. After passing the great towers called the Argonath statues, the boats are obviously not able to go down the waterfall (except in cartoons). The Fellowship now disembarks, and prepares to make their biggest choice yet.
10. Now the Fellowship will make a huge choice: will they go east and directly toward Mordor, or will they go west toward Gondor?

Answer: They don't say in this book

It is not decided in this book. Frodo and Sam head off toward Mordor by themselves after an Orc attack. What happens to the rest of the Fellowship? You'll have to read "The Two Towers" to find out!
