Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How long was Ford stranded on the planet Earth?

Answer: Fifteen Years

Ford had originally only intended to stay for a week, but got stranded for fifteen years. Although he does explain how he got to Earth, it isn't made entirely clear exactly how he got stranded.
2. What was the name of the electronics company that made Marvin, Eddie, and the doors on the Heart of Gold?

Answer: Sirius Cybernetics Corporation

The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation also made a lot of other things, such as the Nutri-Matic Drinks Synthesizer, for one thing. Their marketing division is made up of "a bunch of mindless jerks who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes."
3. Why did the Vogons supposedly destroy the Earth?

Answer: They were building a hyperspace bypass

Of course, it turns out that the psychiatrist Gag Halfrunt hired the Vogons to destroy it, because otherwise it would reveal the meaning of life and put all psychiatrists out of business. It is later revealed that Zaphod himself signed the demolition order during his term as Galactic President.
4. Who was the man in the shack?

Answer: The ruler of the universe

Although he didn't really know he was the ruler--he just answered the questions he was asked in whatever way he wanted. It was actually him that Zaphod wanted to see, which is why he became President and stole the Heart of Gold in the first place.
5. Where is Ford originally from?

Answer: Betelgeuse Seven

Ford was born on Betelgeuse Seven, but grew up on Betelgeuse Five following the Great Collapsing Hrung Disaster of Betelgeuse Seven. According to Adams, he "was never able to explain exactly what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelguese Seven."
6. Who was President of the Galaxy before Zaphod?

Answer: Yooden Vranx

While in the virtual catalog room of Magrathea, Zaphod talks about Yooden Vranx, and also talks about some other rather revealing things. Lig Lury, Jr. was the editor of the "Guide", Veet Vojagig was a student who was obsessed with missing ballpoint pens, and Trin Tragula was the creator of the Total Perspective Vortex.
7. Who was Zaphod looking for when he entered the "Hitchhiker's Guide" offices on Ursa Minor?

Answer: Zarniwoop

He walked up to the receptionist and demanded to see Zarniwoop. It was, of course, the man in the shack he really wanted to see, but he didn't know that at the time. Marvin does show up at this point, however.
8. Which of the following is NOT a component for a Finite Improbabilty Generator?

Answer: A piece of fairy cake

According to the book, the mechanics for making one are as follows: "...hooking the logic circuits of a Bambleweeny 57 submeson brain to an atomic vector plotter suspended in a strong Brownian motion producer--say, a nice hot cup of tea..." Simple, really. A piece of fairy cake is used for the Total Pespective Vortex.
9. What was Trillian's "real" name?

Answer: Tricia McMillan

She apparently shortened her name to sound more "spacey." In previous drafts she was called Goophic, before that Smoodle, and before that she was a man.
10. Who saved the crew from being destroyed by the missile attack?

Answer: Arthur Dent

Arthur hits the control for the Improbability Drive just before the missiles hit them. This causes the missiles turn into a bowl of petunias and a sperm whale.
