Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pat Robbins, the protagonist of "The Walker in Shadows", is a widow when Josef Friedrich moves in next door. Pat and Josef each have a teenager in the house. What exactly is the set up during the first half of the book?

Answer: Pat's son Mark falls in love with Josef's daughter, Kathy; Josef objects

Josef is not a bit pleased when Mark starts 'seeing' Kathy, but then the haunting starts and eventually the whole four get together to sort things out. Like Georgette Heyer, Barbara Michaels sometimes runs two romances per book, juxtaposing a middle-aged couple with a younger one.
2. Ruth Bennett, the protagonist of "Ammie, Come Home", appears in some of Barbara Michaels' other books as well, but this is her first appearance. It is in this book that she meets Pat MacDougal, whom she eventually marries. Why does Ruth turn him down at first?

Answer: She had had a horrific first marriage

Ruth was a widow whose maltreatment by her first husband is strongly hinted at but never made plain. We do know she was very thankful when he died. Pat, a very rude middle-aged anthrolopogy professor, is an unlikely mate for calm, prim Ruth, but their marriage is one of the happiest in suspense fiction.
3. There is something very, very nasty in Ruth Bennett's Georgetown house in "Ammie, Come Home". Ruth's niece, Sara, is possessed by a ghost, but poor dead Ammie isn't the only unquiet spirit about. Who is, or was, the malevolent phantom?

Answer: Douglass Campbell, Ammie's father

The spirit is the insane ghost of Douglass Campbell, who once owned the house and who went mad after he murdered his daughter's lover. Douglass is one of Barbara Michaels' less pleasant characters, to put it mildly.
4. Sara appears in "Ammie, Come Home", and her sister, Karen, plays a part in two novels called "Shattered Silk" and "Stitches in Time". Karen is known by that name in "Shattered Silk", but when Rachel, the protagonist of "Stitches in Time" meets her, she is using a different name. What was it, and why did she make the change?

Answer: Kara, because she wanted to leave her frumpish Karen persona behind

At the beginning of "Shattered Silk", Karen's husband has left her. She recovers, becomes a successful businesswoman, and remarries, changing her name to complete the transformation.
5. In "Houses of Stone", Professor Karen Holloway is hot on the trail of a manuscript written by an obscure American writer. Karen's oddly named friend accompanies her on many of her trips. What is her name?

Answer: Dr Margaret 'Peggy' Finneyfrock

Peggy Finneyfrock is tiny and tough, with grey curls and a fixed determination to help Karen in her search. She is also unexpectedly and surprisingly wealthy, which doesn't hurt when Karen needs to bid on the manuscript.
6. The pseudonymous author of the manuscript Karen Holloway is trying to acquire in "Houses of Stone" is finally revealed as an ancestor of the person who offered the book for sale. What pseudonym did the author use?

Answer: Ismene

The author used 'Ismene' as her pseudonym and also as the name of the viewpoint character in the novel. It took quite a while before Karen and her friends tracked down Ismene's identity and fate.
7. Ellen March, protagonist of "Witch", was hopelessly in love. Who was her man and why did she think she couldn't marry him?

Answer: He was Jack, her brother-in-law, and she thought she couldn't compete with her beautiful dead sister

Ellen had looked after Jack and his three sons for years, and eventually she left to make a life for herself. Unfortunately, the house she moved into was regarded as 'the witch's house' and caused her no end of trouble.
8. In "Vanish With the Rose", Diana pretended to be an expert in which flowers to gain entry to Charles' and Emily's household?

Answer: Heritage roses

Diana pretended to be a garden landscaper, although she really knew little about gardens. Heritage roses were a matter of special interest to Emily, who owned the garden. Diana had to take a crash course.
9. In "Vanish With the Rose", Diana had a special reason for wanting to spend time at Charles and Emily's house. What was it?

Answer: She was trying to discover the fate of her brother

Diana's brother had vanished, and she had traced him to the Nicholson household. As far as she knew, he'd never left there, so she was desperate to find out what had happened to him.
10. Who was the Barbara Michaels hero who wore far too many clothes and had a huge beard? He shaved it off and was nearly clobbered by his lady for his pains. She thought he was an intruder...

Answer: Adam, from "Stitches in Time"

Adam had had a very unhappy childhood, and covered his emotional hurt by hiding under layers of clothes and hair. He fell in love with Rachel, and shaved off the beard in an effort to please her. Instead, Rachel threw a glass at him and made his nose bleed.
