Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the prologue, there is a story about a boy going home for the holidays. He sees a boy and his mother in the snow, and wants to help them. At the end of the book, we find out who the boy returning home is. Who is he?

Answer: Emerson

Emerson was the boy in the carriage going home. He tells his mother about the woman and boy in the snow, and asks her to help them. She says they were at the house, asking for help, and she refused them. It turns out the woman was Emerson's father's girlfriend on the side, and the boy was his illegitimate son (therefore, being Emerson and Walter's half-brother).

At the end of the book, we find out the boy in the snow was Sethos, Emerson's enemy.
2. This book takes place during which war?

Answer: World War One

This book takes place in 1914, during WWI. Emerson dislikes the war (as did everyone) because it interferes with his excavations. Also, Johnny and Willy, Evelyn and Walter's twin sons, are off in France fighting.
3. When Emerson sees Ramses with another white feather, he tells him he hopes Ramses "punched him in the jaw!". Why didn't Ramses do just that?

Answer: A woman gave it to him.

Ramses had been receiving many white feathers, by people who accused him of cowardice since he didn't join the Army after war broke out in Europe. This particular person who gave him the feather was a woman, so Ramses couldn't "punch him in the jaw!", to quote Emerson. Little do they know the part he would play in the war! Ramses becomes a spy to stop the Egyptian Revolution from breaking out, and to find out which British officer is working with the enemy. (It turns out to be Percy).
4. Who is the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Cairo?

Answer: Thomas Russel

Thomas Russel is the man who hired Ramses to play the part of Wardani. Ramses reports everything he learns to Mr. Russel so that a shipment of guns that is destined for the revolutionaries won't reach them.
5. Where has David been interned for the duration of the war?

Answer: India

David was involved in the movement for Egyptian's independence from Great Britain, and for his own protection was sent to India, even though his wife, Lia, is expecting a child.
6. What is the name of the girl that Ramses rescues off the Great Pyramid?

Answer: Melinda

Melinda (or Molly) climbed the Great Pyramid but couldn't get down. Ramses climbed up to save her. She was smitten with him ever since.
7. Which cousin dies in France?

Answer: Johnny

Johnny and Willy were twins who went overseas together. Raddie was Evelyn and Walter's oldest child, then the twins, then Lia. They also have a younger daughter named Margaret.
8. What makes Ramses' wounded arm bleed again at the Christmas party?

Answer: Dancing with Molly

Molly wanted so badly for Ramses to swing her around the room in a dance, so he did, breaking open his wound in the process. If Ramses had not danced with Molly, everyone would have known something was wrong, especially Nefret. He was hurt in one of his many escapades as Wardani.
9. The Emersons find a statue of which pharaoh?

Answer: Khafre

Khafre was the son of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid. Nefret knew before they completely unearthed the statue that it was him, because she said it looked like Ramses when he puts on his "stone pharaoh face", which resembles that of Khafre.
10. Who kidnaps Nefret?

Answer: Farouk

Farouk was one of Wardani's men. He wanted money, so he kidnapped Nefret for a ransom. Farouk promises "a bigger fish than Wardani", but he is killed so the Emersons don't immediately find out who the "big fish" is. It turns out to be Percy.
11. Who is Molly's uncle?

Answer: Major Hamilton

Major Hamilton is supposedly the uncle of Molly. In reality, Major Hamilton is an alias of Sethos. It turns out in later books that Molly is actually named Maryam and is Sethos' daughter by one of Amelia's enemies, Bertha.
12. Who comes looking for Amelia when she goes to "capture" the Count de Sevigny?

Answer: Nefret

While Ramses and Emerson were out, Nefret becomes suspicious of what Amelia might be doing, so she goes to the room of the Count, only to get locked in with Amelia as well. They finally find their way out, however.
13. What does Ramses dress up as for the costume ball?

Answer: A Cowboy

Ramses dresses up like an American cowboy, wearing Cyrus' boots, a "ten gallon hat", and a handkerchief around his neck. He also had two guns strapped to his sides.
14. Farouk promises a "big fish" for the Emersons. The "big fish" is supposedly the traitor who is working with the Turks and Germans. Who does this traitor turn out to be?

Answer: Percy

Farouk is killed, so he never tells the Emersons who the big fish is. They do find out, however, when Ramses spies at the meeting between Percy and the Turk.
15. Which cat came out to Egypt with the Emerson's this particular season?

Answer: Seshat

Horus usually goes with them, but he and Sennia couldn't be parted from each other, so Seshat goes with them instead. Both Bastet and Anubis are dead by then.
16. Whose shop is raided because the police suspect him of being a revolutionary?

Answer: Aslimi

Aslimi is a member of Wardani's gang. The police suspect he knows information, so they raid his shop of artifacts. The meetings between Wardani and his men were sometimes held at this shop.
17. We finally find out what Nefret's nightmares were about, the ones she's had since she was young. Who are they about?

Answer: Ramses when he's in danger

Ever since she was young, Nefret always had these nightmares. We find out that's because her dreams were about Ramses, and he was always in danger! She gets the nightmare when Ramses is tracking Percy, so she tells Amelia and Emerson that she knows about everything Ramses and David have been doing, and now Ramses is in the worst trouble he's ever been in.
18. Who is part of the original rescue party to save Ramses from Percy and his deadly whip?

Answer: Nefret and Amelia

David comes to the house, his leg shot and bleeding badly. He is able to tell Nefret a brief description of where Ramses is, and then passes out. Emerson goes to Russel to ask where Ramses has gone, while Nefret and Amelia try to save Ramses. David is left in the capable hands of Fatima until Dr. Sophia arrives.
19. Why is Major Hamilton at the meeting with Percy and the Turk?

Answer: Major Hamilton is an English agent, like Ramses

Major Hamilton (Sethos), like Ramses, is a British agent. Sethos was to find out who was the traitor that was collaborating with the Turks. He finds out it is Percy, by pretending to be a traitor just like Percy. Sethos is the one who tells the police when the attack on the Suez Canal will be.
20. How did Nefret sign the letter she sent to Lia at the very end of the book?

Answer: Nefret Emerson

This means that Nefret and Ramses are FINALLY married! They patched things up when Nefret saved Ramses from Percy and he told her he still loved her.
