Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Lucas

Lord Lucas Ellesmere was Evelyn's cousin. He had bought an ancient papyrus and asked Walter to translate it for everyone. The papyrus read: "The love of the sister is upon yonder side; a stretch of water is between, and a crocodile waiteth upon the sandbank".
2. The fourth book in the series is "Lion in the Valley". According to the poem at the beginning of the book, which god was the "lion in the valley"?

Answer: Set

Most of the books in the series start with an ancient Egyptian poem. This poem read: "...As is Set upon his mountain... Like a wild lion in a valley of goats."
3. Which animal correctly fills in the blank? The sixth book in the series is called "The Last _______ Died at Noon".

Answer: Camel

In this book, the clan went out to an oasis in the Nubian desert. It is in this desert that they found Nefret and brought her back to live with them. The title refers to the long trip out to find the desert and the peril they were in after the last camel died.
4. In "The Snake, the Crocodile, and the Dog", which animal attacked Amelia?

Answer: Dog

Amelia had been translating a story called "The Doomed Prince". In the story it was prophesized that a prince would die by either the snake, crocodile, or the dog. The events of the novel seem to parallel the story. Amelia's superstitions told her that Emerson might be in danger from a dog.

When she saw Emerson walking toward a dog, she ran and pushed him out of the way so that the dog attacked her instead of him.
5. Which cat died in the ninth book, "Seeing a Large Cat"?

Answer: Bastet

The Emerson family has had many cats. Ramses' favorite, Bastet, died in this book. Ramses tried to pretend it idn't bother him, but actually it really did.
6. The eleventh book in the series is "The Falcon at the Portal". Which god, mentioned often in this book, was a falcon?

Answer: Horus

Horus, son of Osiris, was a falcon-god. Nefret compared Ramses to Horus in this book, saying he sort of resembled a falcon, and Maude gave Ramses a falcon statue for Christmas. At the end of the book, Abdullah told Amelia in one of her dreams that a storm was coming, but in the end "the falcon will fly through the portal of the dawn".
7. The twelfth book in the series is "He Shall Thunder in the Sky". According to the poem at the beginning of the book, who "shall thunder in the sky"?

Answer: Set

This comes from a papyrus called "The Judging of Set and Horus". The poem read: "Then Re-Harakhte said: Let Set be given unto me, to dwell with me and be my son. He shall thunder in the sky and be feared."
8. According to Egyptian myth and the poem in the beginning of "The Golden One", who is, in fact, the "golden one"?

Answer: Hathor

Ramses compared Nefret to Hathor. The poem is composed of many phrases about Hathor: "We praise the Golden One".
9. At the beginning of "Children of the Storm", there are three sentences that say: "The day of the children of the storm. Very dangerous. Do not go on the water on this day." What is that?

Answer: Horoscope

The book says that this is from an ancient Egyptian horoscope. This book takes place after World War I had just ended, but there were still many dangers even after this "storm".
10. The Emersons received a very interesting statue in "The Serpent on the Crown". At the beginning, the serpent was missing from the statue. Who found it?

Answer: Daoud

After Amelia was shot, Daoud thought that if he found the serpent that was missing it would somehow make her better. He went around digging for it, and finally found it and presented it to her. She did get better after that.
