Count Stylptitch was the Herzoslovakian nobleman who gave his memoirs to James McGrath. Baron Lolopretjzyl was another Herzoslovakian who represented the Loyalist Party of Herzoslovakia in London. Anthony Cade was the main character in the story. Prince Michael posed as Count Stanislaus at Chimneys and as Mr. Holmes when he picked up Count Sylptitch's memoirs from Anthony.

A false telegram is sent to the members of Virginia's household, purporting to be from her, telling her staff to go to Ranelagh for the weekend so that they would be out of the way when she found the body of Giuseppe in her lounge. Giuseppe had previously arrived on her doorstep with the letters signed 'Virginia Revel' and she had allowed him to blackmail her of �40.00, even though she hadn't written the letters and her husband was dead.

9. Where was the diamond found?

Answer: In the garden under the 'Richmond' rose bush

The memoirs revealed the hiding place in the secret passageway, in which was hidden the second clue of 'rose'. Anthony trapped Mademoiselle Brun and King Victor by stating that the diamond was behind the 'Life and Times of the Earl of Richmond', although he and Mr. Hiram Fish knew that it was in the garden.
