It all began with a brief encounter between two strangers on a train. Luke Fitzwilliam was a retired policeman just back in England, after a stint in India. Miss Fullerton was an elderly lady from the village of Wychwood under Ashe. She told Luke a fantastic tale about a rash of accidental deaths in the village, but she knows the deaths are murders because before each, the killer looked at the victim in a special way. Now she has seen that look given to Dr. Humbleby, and she is going to Scotland Yard for help in preventing his murder.

The one thing Miss Fullerton never told Luke was the killer's name.

Miss Fullerton never made it to Scotland Yard. She was struck down and killed by a car as she was crossing Whitehall, and the driver left the scene without stopping. It was quite a jolt to Luke when he read about the death in the newspaper the following morning and realized the victim was Miss Fullerton.

Answer: He saw Dr. John Humbleby's obituary in the newspaper.

Dr. Humbleby's death coming just a week after Miss Fullerton was killed seemed like too much of a coincidence to Luke. He decided that he would go to Wychwood under Ashe and see if Miss Fullerton's story was true.

One of Luke's oldest friends was Jimmy Lorrimer, and Jimmy's cousin, Bridget Conway, just happened to be engaged to Lord Easterfield. Luke went down to Wychwood under Ashe posing as Bridget's cousin who was researching a book on folklore, customs, and superstitions.

Wonky Pooh was Miss Fullerton's orange Persian cat. Wonky Pooh went to live with Miss Honoria Waynflete after Miss Fullerton's death. Wonky Pooh's sore ear provided the killer with the perfect murder weapon for Dr. Humbleby's very nasty "accidental" death. Major Horton's bulldogs were named Nero, Nelly, and Augustus.

At the time of her death, Amy Gibbs was working as a maid for Miss Waynflete, who hired Amy after she was fired by Lord Easterfield. Amy Gibbs was just not the type of young woman to have committed suicide, so it was thought that she had reached for her bottle of cough mixture during the night and grabbed the hat paint instead.

As Bridget pointed out to Luke, hats were so cheap that girls never bothered with painting them different colors anymore. In any case, Amy would never have painted a hat red, because she had carrot colored hair.

Miss Fullerton had seen the killer give Dr. Humbleby the certain look that marked him as a victim. She warned him to be be very careful, before she went up to London. Rose told Luke that Miss Fullerton had said she was very worried about Bridget Conway, Lord Easterfield's fiance, too.

Many years ago, when Lord Easterfield was an untitled, but ambitious village lad, Miss Waynflete was engaged to him. She had taught her canary to take a cube of sugar from her lips. The bird gave her a sharp peck one day, and Miss Waynflete wrung its neck in a fit of rage. Gordon had seen the incident and called off the wedding. Miss Waynflete told Luke that it was Lord Easterfield who killed the canary, and that she was the one who jilted him.

Answer: Miss Waynflete

Bridget was a very intelligent young lady, and so Luke's story of doing research for a book didn't wash long with her. She told Luke that Miss Waynflete also thought the deaths were suspicious, too. Luke decided to tell Miss Waynflete all about his meeting with Miss Fullerton on the train, but he left Miss Waynflete's house thinking that she knew more than she was telling.

Answer: All of them had been fired by him.

Rivers took Lucy Carter out joy riding in Lord Easterfield's car, had a few too many, and told Lord Easterfield off. Amy Gibbs was caught staying out all night. Tommy Pierce (a horrid boy if there ever was one) did a very unflattering imitation of of his Lordship.

He gave them all the sack, because there were three things Lord Easterfield would not tolerate: loose morals, drunkenness, and impertinence.

Luke had found a connection between the strange Mr. Ellsworthy and both Amy Gibbs and Tommy Pierce. It was Midsummer's Eve, and he knew Ellsworthy and his followers would be over at the Witches Meadow, so he decided to search Ellsworthy's house. Luke narrowly missed being caught by Ellsworthy, who returned home with his hands covered with blood.

Luke knew the key to finding the killer was to find the common link between them all. He also knew, from what Miss Fullerton had told him, that the murderer would a person no one would suspect. Luke realized that the one thing that each of the victims had in common was that Lord Easterfield had a grievance against each one of them.

She told him that the killer was a person that no one would suspect, but she never mentioned the killer's sex. Luke just assumed the killer was a man.

Miss Waynflete slipped arsenic in Mrs. Horton's tea, shoved John Carter over the footbridge, pushed Tommy Pierce off the window ledge, put the hat paint beside Amy Gibbs's bed, put infected bandages on Dr. Humbleby's hand, pushed the masonry pineapple off on Rivers, and she was just about to kill Bridget when Luke saved her. Why did such a seemingly nice lady turn into a one-woman killing machine? It was the world's oldest motive: revenge.

Her family fortune had dwindled, but the man who jilted her so many years ago showed up not only with a packet of money but a title, too! It all just sent her right over the edge.

It was not enough to just kill Lord Easterfield. She wanted him to suffer. Miss Waynflete murdered Miss Fullerton by pushing her out in front of a car.

Not only did Luke help catch the killer, he also found true love. We can only hope that Luke and Bridget lived happily ever after. Please note that in the English version, "Murder Is Easy", Miss Fullerton was called Miss Pinkerton and Bridget's fiance was Lord Whitfield instead of Lord Easterfield.
