Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apart from the fact that they all feature Hercule Poirot, what else do the novels 'Dead Man's Folly', 'Cards on the Table' and 'Mrs. McGinty's Dead' have in common?

Answer: They also feature Ariadne Oliver.

All the three novels also feature Ariadne Oliver. Poirot first met Ariadne in 'Cards on the Table'. This fictitious author was modeled on Christie herself.
2. 'Remembered Death', 'And Then There Were None' and 'A Pocketful of Rye' all had victims who died of poisoning. Which poison links the three books?

Answer: Cyanide

Anthony Marston and Emily Brent in 'And Then There Were None', Rosemary Barton in 'Remembered Death' and Adele Fortescue in 'A Pocketful of Rye' were all victims of cyanide poisoning. 'Remembered Death' was also published under the title 'Sparkling Cyanide'.
3. What links 'Towards Zero', 'The Secret of Chimneys' and 'Cards on the Table'?

Answer: They all feature Superintendent Battle.

'Cards on the Table' features a number of other Christie characters including Hercule Poirot, Ariadne Oliver and Colonel Race. However, Poirot is the one who uses his grey cells to solve the mystery.
4. What is common to the novels 'After the Funeral', 'Murder at the Gallop' and 'Funerals are Fatal'?

Answer: They are different titles used for the same book.

They are alternate titles for the same book. It was first published in 1953 in the United Kingdom under the title 'After the Funeral' and in the United States, as 'Funerals are Fatal'. Later it was reprinted in the UK as 'Murder at the Gallop' in 1963. The book features Hercule Poirot.
5. Which famous Christie sleuth solves the murders in 'A Murder is Announced', 'Murder with Mirrors' and 'Murder at the Vicarage'?

Answer: Miss Marple

Miss Marple was introduced in the 'Murder at the Vicarage' published in 1930. She featured in 12 full-length novels. Christie modeled the character of Miss Marple on her own grandmother. The name Miss Marple was derived from a railway station on the Manchester to Sheffield Hope Valley line.
6. What's common to 'The Mystery of the Blue Train', 'What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw!' and 'Murder on the Orient Express'?

Answer: The murder is committed on a train journey.

In all the three novels, the murder was committed during a train journey. While 'Murder on the Orient Express' and 'The Mystery of the Blue Train' feature Hercule Poirot, 'What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw!' has Miss Marple trying to nab the killer. 'What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw!' was also published under the title '4.50 from Paddington'.
7. What links 'Sleeping Murder', 'Five Little Pigs' and 'Elephants Can Remember'?

Answer: The murder is solved many years after it had been committed.

'Elephants Can Remember' was one of the last novels written by Agatha Christie. It featured Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver. 'Sleeping Murder' was the last published novel to feature Miss Marple though it was written by Christie much earlier. This led to some discrepancies like the presence of Colonel Arthur Bantry who was mentioned as dead in earlier books like 'The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side'.
8. What links the novels 'Murder in Mesopotamia', 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' and 'The Murder at the Vicarage'?

Answer: The novels are written in the first person.

Another novel 'Endless Night' was also written in the first person.
9. What is common to 'After the Funeral', 'Murder in Mesopotamia' and 'Taken at the Flood' other than the fact that Hercule Poirot solves the murders in all three books?

Answer: The murderers (or co-conspirators) try to pass themselves off as other people.

In 'After the Funeral', Mrs. Gilchrist impersonates Cora Lansquenet at the funeral of Richard Abernethie. In 'Murder in Mesopotamia', Louise Leidner marries archeologist Dr. Leidner without realizing that he's her former husband. In 'Taken at the Flood', the woman pretending to be Rosaleen Cloade is an imposter.
10. How are the novels 'The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side', 'A Murder is Announced' and 'Peril at End House' connected?

Answer: The murderer appears to be the intended victim.

In all three novels, the person assumed to be an intended victim at the beginning of the book turns out to be the murderer. In 'Peril at End House', Nick Buckley stages the attempts on her life to get away with the murder of her cousin later. Marina Gregg is assumed to be the intended victim in 'The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side' when actually she had poisoned Heather Badcock.

In 'A Murder is Announced', Letitia Blacklock pretends to have been shot at.
