The Story of Eyvind the Wolfskin Quiz

"Wolfskin" is the name of a wonderful book by one of my fave writers, Juliet Marillier. I highly recommend it, especially to readers of the "Sevenwaters" series.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First of all, what are the names of the two friends who later became 'blood brothers' in the book?

Answer: Eyvind and Somerled

The two were described as "different as day and night", Eyvind with his fair hair and kindness, and the sadistic Somerled (though his name was contrary to his own behaviour) with his long dark hair and cruelty to both humans and animals.
2. How does Halla commit suicide, after being hurt by Somerled?

Answer: She doesn't commit suicide

It was Ragna, Halla's friend, who committed suicide, one of the saddest moments in the novel. When she was thirteen, Somerled forcibly made her pregnant, but he blackmailed her into keeping silent, so there was no proof to use against him. She later killed herself by jumping off a bridge and drowning.
3. The young man with the red hair we meet later on in the novel, who goes by the name of Firehead, is actually Eyvind's childhood friend ________.

Answer: Sigurd

Sigurd loved and mourned Ragna and he suspected from the beginning that it was Somerled who had caused her to commit suicide. He tried to avenge her by killing Somerled. After Ragna killed herself, he ran off and adopted the name Firehead, not just because of his red hair, but also his new temper.

He unsuccessfully tried once more to murder Somerled when they were grown men. It was, in fact, Sigurd who was killed after a suspicious Somerled, fearing for his life, caused a bull to gore him.
4. Who was the Priestess Nessa?

Answer: King Engus' Niece

According to their history, the Line of the Kings has to be carried on by the females. King Engus had no daughter, but three nieces. Nessa had to abandon her role as Priestess to carry on the line after her sisters died, and she fell in love (and had a child) with Eyvind.
5. What did Nessa create to prove that Somerled murdered his half-brother Ulf?

Answer: A Bone Harp

Using Ulf's bones and hair, she fashioned a mystical harp that summoned Ulf's voice to tell of the crime that Somerled committed, that of the gruesome murder of his own brother.
6. True or False: Eirik's best friend, Hakon, survives the fire that kills his young family.

Answer: false

Hakon was the childhood friend of Eyvind's older brother Eirik, and was also a brave Wolfskin whom everyone looked up to. But when he lost his hearing, he left the side of the cruel Somerled, who would have been his leader and King. For revenge, Somerled ordered the burning of his house, and Hakon died trying to protect his young family, unsuccessfully.
7. Ulf's two dogs are later saved and raised by Eyvind and Rona. What were their (new) names?

Answer: Shadow and Guard

When Ulf was buried, they wanted to bury his loyal dogs along with them as a sacrifice, but Eyvind secretly let them loose to spare their lives. They later help save him and the Priestess(es).
8. Somerled names the new kingdom after his nickname, Horse-Master. What is the name of the newly seized land?

Answer: Hrossey

The land belonged to The Folk, the kingdom of King Engus. But after Ulf died, Somerled ignored their peace treaty and seized their land forcibly, and murdered almost all of The Folk.
9. Brother Tadhg, the Christian Monk, is the translator between The Folk and the newcomers. How did he (along with his brethren) arrive in that land in the first place?

Answer: They came in small curraghs of skins with no guide or map

Brother Tadhg and his Christian brothers set out because of persecution because of their faith. They fled in very small boats, with no map or compass to guide them, only their deep faith. Eyvind later proposed that Somerled do the same (set out with no guide) as his punishment.
10. It is Eyvind who orders the execution of Somerled.

Answer: false

Jarl Magnus proposes the death sentence for Somerled because of all the desecration and murders he committed, including that of his own brother, but they later give Eyvind the chance to make up a fitting sentence for Somerled. Eyvind wants Somerled to pay for his crimes (including the torture and near execution of Eyvind, himself) but as he still careds for him and wants him to learn from his mistake, he proposes that he set out like the Christian Brothers did, to learn what true courage means. This provides the chance for him to restart his life, and is also the basis for one of Juliet Marillier's characters in the sequel book, "Foxmask".
