Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2001) Renee Zellweger stars with Hugh Grant in a romantic comedy about a thirty-something, overweight woman who smokes and drinks too much, and is seeking love in London. Life gets complicated when her sleazy boss takes an interest in her, but she eventually recognizes him for what he is, and does find love in the form of the reliable Mark Darcy.

Answer: Bridget Jones's Diary

Sharon Maguire directed this funny film that also starred Colin Firth, Gemma Jones, Celia Imrie, James Faulkner and Jim Broadbent. 'Bridget Jones' is a fairly well loved character in Britain, and there was a lot of disbelief when Texan, Renee Zellweger was cast in the role, but she delivered a wonderful performance.
2. (2003) Hugh Grant plays Britain's newest Prime Minister and Alan Rickman plays his brother-in-law, in this series of vignettes about the love lives of loosely inter-connected couples (or singles), all looking not to be lonely during the Christmas season.

Answer: Love Actually

Richard Curtis directed this very funny film with a gigantic cast that included, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson and Keira Knightley. I made the mistake of taking my son to see it though, and some of the scenes are decidedly too racy for him.
3. (1991) Alan Rickman plays the villain to Kevin Costner's hero, in this movie about a young man returning from the Crusades to find his father hanging and the whole area trembling under the tyranny of the Sheriff.

Answer: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Kevin Reynolds directed this excellent adventure film that also starred Morgan Freeman, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Christian Slater, and Sean Connery in an uncredited role. The only flaw that I found in the movie was the way that Costner's accent faded in and out. Rickman was absolutely outstanding as the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham.
4. (1985) After being broken out of jail, Kevin Costner, his brother and a good friend decide to head west to find their fortune. First they stop off at the town where their sister lives, to say goodbye. Unfortunately there is so much corruption in that town, that they have to set it right before they move on. John Cleese plays a Sheriff that they meet along their travels.

Answer: Silverado

Lawrence Kasdan cast Kevin Costner in this movie because all of Costner's scenes in 'The Big Chill' ended up on the cutting room floor. Jeff Goldblum, Linda Hunt, Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover and Jon Kasdan also starred.
5. (1997) John Cleese lends his voice talents to an ape named Ape, in this comedic adventure that also stars Brendan Fraser. Lost in the jungle as a baby, Fraser's character is raised by Ape and is very happy, until the 'perfectly-permed heiress' comes into his life and starts him thinking about taking a mate.

Answer: George of the Jungle

Sam Weisman directed this hysterically funny movie, based on an old cartoon series. It also starred Leslie Mann, and Thomas Haden Church.
6. (2001) Brendan Fraser reprises his role as the adventurous Rick O'Connell, who finds himself faced with having to fight the evil, and once again reanimated Imhotep. This time Imhotep has brought his campaign of destruction to England, and is out to claim Rick's wife as the vessel into which his long dead lover can be reborn. Into this messy mix we add The Rock playing The Scorpion King, a frightening force who both Rick and Imhotep must take on.

Answer: The Mummy Returns

Stephen Sommers directed this sequel which, in my opinion, falls way short of the original. The plot becomes way too complicated and the humour falls a little flat. Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo also starred.
7. (2003) The Rock stars as Beck, a 'retrieval expert', sent to retrieve a crime boss's son, who is trying to avoid his father, while he seeks for treasure in the Amazon. Once Beck gets there, he finds that his quarry isn't all that nasty after all, and becomes involved in the treasure hunt. Christopher Walken is his normal brilliant self as Hatcher, the slave-driving, crazy man who controls the mining town where our heros are searching.

Answer: The Rundown

Peter Berg directed this action/adventure that I enjoyed a whole lot more than I thought I would. Sean William Scott, Rosario Dawson and Ewen Bremner also starred.
This movie is known as "Welcome to the Jungle" in Australia.
8. (2001) Christopher Walken is Hal Weidmann, an eccentric director who's holding the only copy of a movie hostage, while the Movie Company is trying to run promotion for the film. Billy Crystal is the movie publicist who has to run the press junket without actually having a copy of the film to show them. He does this by getting the two stars of the film, who have recently had a very public and nasty split, back together for the junket.

Answer: America's Sweethearts

(2001) Joe Roth directed this very funny film that also starred John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hank Azaria, Alan Arkin, and Stanley Tucci.
9. (1987) Billy Crystal plays Miracle Max, who brings Westley (played by Cary Elwes) back from being 'almost dead'. He needs to not be dead so that he can stop the marriage of his true love, Princess Buttercup, to the evil Prince Humperdinck.

Answer: The Princess Bride

Rob Reiner directed this masterpiece of tongue-in-cheek, action/adventure that also starred Robin Wright-Penn, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, Fred Savage, and Peter Falk.
10. (1996) Cary Elwes and Helen Hunt star in this movie about storm chasers who study tornadoes, in the hopes of understanding them better and developing a better warning system.

Answer: Twister

Jan de Bont directed this action film that also starred Bill Paxton, as Hunt's ex, who is trying to get her to sign divorce papers while she's out chasing a series of very intense storms. The terrifying sound of the tornadoes, was created by taking the recording of a camel's moan and playing it back slowly.
11. (2000) Helen Hunt stars with Mel Gibson in a very funny movie about a chauvinist who wakes up, after nearly being electrocuted, with the amazing ability to hear women's thoughts. At first he uses this ability for his own personal gains, but he soon finds that he comes to care a lot more than he ever did before.

Answer: What Women Want

Nancy Meyers directed and Marisa Tomei, Alan Alda, Bette Midler and Delta Burke also starred. The only flaw in this delightful movie is the fact that all the loose ends are tied up way too neatly, and way too quickly.
12. (2000) Mel Gibson stars with Chris Cooper in this movie about the American War of Independence. Benjamin Martin (Gibson) has no intention of getting involved in the war, until his son is cut down in front of him. Then he becomes the worst nightmare that the British ever had.

Answer: The Patriot

Doug Liman directs this very violent movie that stretches my ability to suspend my disbelief. No, the British weren't as nasty as they were painted to be, and no, the war was not won single-handedly by Benjamin. Heath Ledger and Jason Isaacs also star.
13. (2002) Chris Cooper and Matt Damon star in this action packed, spy/thriller about a young man who is found adrift with amnesia, and no clues to his identity except for the bullets in his back and the Swiss bank account number imbedded in his hip. As he struggles to find out who he is, it becomes very clear that he's being hunted, along with the young woman who offers him a ride and soon becomes his love interest.

Answer: The Bourne Identity

Franka Potente, Julia Stiles and Brian Cox also starred under Doug Liman's direction.
14. (2003) Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as Bob and Walt, co-joined twins, joined at the hip because they share a liver. They get along remarkably well until Walt talks Bob into moving to Los Angeles so that he can pursue a career in acting. They get a job on a popular television show, but their newfound success changes everything, and they no longer get along as well as they need to.

Answer: Stuck on You

Bobby and Peter Farrelly directed this film that also starred Eva Mendes and Jackie Flynn. Cher and Griffin Dunne have roles as themselves.
15. (2000) Greg Kinnear stars with Renee Zellweger in this black comedy about a woman who snaps after seeing her husband brutally murdered. She becomes obsessed with a popular soap opera, believing it to be real and herself engaged to the leading character. She sets off in her husband's car, anxious to reunite with this imaginary fiancee (played by Kinnear). What she doesn't realize is that the trunk of the car is full of the drugs her husband stole, and the two men who murdered him are chasing her across the country.

Answer: Nurse Betty

Neil La Bute directed this very bizarre movie that also starred Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock as a father/son hit man team.
