Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song was written on the blackboard behind Ms. Shields?

Answer: Yankee Doodle

We saw the song on the board as Ms. Shields graded the children's themes. She was extremely upset with the effort the children had put into their theme. She came to Ralphie's theme and was so overjoyed she went around the room giving Ralphie A plus marks.

Tedde Moore played the role of Ms. Shields. After Ralphie received his grade on the theme, we saw Ms. Shields dressed as a witch telling Ralphie he would shoot his eye out. Ralphie's mom was dressed as a jester and also chanted along with Ms. Shields.
2. What Disney character was on display at Highbee's store?

Answer: Doc

We saw Doc and Snow White cutouts in the window as the boys looked at the toy displays. We saw many toys in the window, but Ralphie found what he was looking for. Ralphie found his heart's desire, The Red Ryder Air Rifle. There was also a cutout display of Red Ryder in the store window. We saw Mickey and Minnie in the Christmas Parade, but Dopey was not represented in the movie at all.

Doc was the leader of the dwarfs in "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. The movie was the first full length animated feature to be released to theatres. It was released in December of 1937. Walt was awarded 8 Academy Awards for the film, one full size and seven smaller versions. The award was presented to him by Shirley Temple. Roy Atwell did the voice of Doc for the film.
3. Which character from "The Wizard of Oz" did Ralphie tell to leave him alone?

Answer: Wicked Witch

The Witch approached Ralphie and Randy while they waited in line to see Santa. Ralphie told the Witch to leave him alone, he was thinking. The Witch gave Ralphie a bewildered look and moved on. Ralphie was contemplating how to ask Santa for his beloved air rifle.

"The Wizard of Oz" was released in 1939. It was based on the book entitled "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. I have adored this movie for the longest time. I can remember anticipating it coming to television and watching it with my mom. My favorite scene was always when the Wizard scared the Cowardly Lion and he ran out of his throne room and jumped out a window.
4. Who let Ms. Shields know where Flick was?

Answer: Esther Jane

The children came in from recess and Flick was not with them. Ms. Shields asked the class where Flick was and nobody responded. Esther Jane finally raised her hand and pointed out the window. Ms. Shields looked outside and saw Flick stuck to the pole. The police and fire department were called to help detach Flick from the pole.

Schwartz was the main culprit in getting Flick to stick his tongue to the pole. He basically tied Flick's hands behind his back when he triple dog dared him. Ralphie stated Flick caused a breach in etiquette when he went straight to the triple dog dare you from the double dog dare. Flick refused to tell who had caused him to do this, but Ms. Shields knew it was Schwartz and Ralphie.
5. What was the name of Scut's toady?

Answer: Grover Dill

In the movie, it was explained in the world of kids you were either a bully, a toady, or one of their many victims. Grover Dill was a lot smaller then Ralphie and his friends, but he used the bully powering of Scut Farkus to his advantage. When Ralphie had finally had enough and started beating Scut up, Grover tried to step in. Ralphie pushed Grover off and Grover ran away saying he was going to tell his dad. Ralphie continued to pound on Scut Farkus until his mom arrived. The fight would go down in history as The Scut Farkus Affair.

Yano Anaya played the role of Grover Dill. Scut Farkus was played by Zack Ward.
6. "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" was the name of the book the movie was base on.

Answer: True

Jean Parker Shepherd wrote the book the movie was based on. Jean also wrote the screenplay for the film. He had a small part in the film as well. He was the one who told Ralphie where the line began. His narration was one of the best parts about the movie for me. I loved hearing his, in my opinion, self assured, very confident sounding voice depicting his action as a youth through the young Ralphie. It was a great contradiction and made the movie a lot of fun to watch.

Jean Parker Shepherd passed away in 1999, he was 78 years old. The movie was directed by Bob Clark. It was released in 1983 and to this day is one of my all time favorite.
7. What role did Ian Petrella play?

Answer: Randy

Randy was Ralphie's younger brother. Randy had a lot of great scenes in the movie. My favorite was his comical reaction to Ralphie's pink bunny costume. Ralphie kept telling Randy to be quiet and Randy just kept laughing. The other scene was when the boys were getting ready for school. Mrs. Parker was putting Randy's outer clothes on and Randy was whining. Mrs. Parker coudn't hear him because Randy had a scarf wrapped around his mouth. She unwrapped him and he told his mom, "I can't put my arms down". She tried several times to put his arms down and when that failed, she told him, "Put your arms down when you get to school".

As far as I can tell, this was Ian's only acting credit. He did a great job portraying the annoying little brother. I can relate to both Ralphie and Randy's relationship, having a younger brother myself.
8. What did Mrs. Parker give Mr. Parker as a Christmas present?

Answer: bowling ball

Ralphie had just been sent upstairs to try on his pink bunny suit. Mrs. Parker gave her husband his gift. She accidentally dropped it on his lap. He said, in a extremely high voice, thank you. He tried to act surprise when he opened the gift.

Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon played the roles of Ralphie's parents. I learned, while putting my facts together for the quiz, that Jack Nicholson was considered for the part of Mr. Parker. I can see Jack playing the role as his character in "The Shining"...wouldn't that be something.
9. What did the Parkers originally have planned for their Christmas dinner?

Answer: Turkey

Ralphie came in from outside after he concocted the absurd story of the icicle hitting his eye. He left the door open and in came their hillbilly neighbor's dogs. Mr. Parker sat there unaware, reading his paper as the dogs ran by. Suddenly, he heard the ruckus in the kitchen. He went into the kitchen and found the turkey all but gone. The dogs had devoured it in a matter of moments.

Peter Billingsley played the role of Ralphie. I will give it to him, he never stopped trying to get that gun. He was shot down, no pun intended, by every adult he went to. His persistence paid off and he got what he wanted. I think it a great thing he didn't shoot his eye out.
10. Who did Ralphie say he heard the curse word from?

Answer: Schwartz

Mrs. Parker, after taking the soap out of Ralphie's mouth, asked him who he'd heard it from. Ralphie blurted out Schwartz and Mrs. Parker put the soap back in. She called Schwartz's mom and told her what Ralphie said. She asked her if she knew where he got it from and she said his father. This was extremely funny because it was the truth. Mrs. Parker told her no it was her son. We hear Mrs. Schwartz running down the hall and she laid into poor innocent Schwartz.

I hope you enjoyed my quiz on one of the funniest movies of all time. Remember whatever you do, don't shoot your eye out kid.
