Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most people already know that the best Christmas present for a nine-year-old boy from Indiana should be some sort of a gun. Maybe not a Luger, but some sort of weapon to show your friends the type of man you really are. What was the name of the gun that Ralphie dearly wanted?

Answer: Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle

No true American could actually miss this. Even the Old Man knows this answer. The Red Ryder comes in to play quite a few time during the movie. Daisy was the manufacturer of the Red Ryder. The gun in the movie was customized for Ralphie because he was left handed. And be careful because "you'll shoot your eye out" if you're not.
2. Ralphie's Old Man could be, at times, a grouch. He cursed too much and he hated the next door neighbor's dogs with a passion. According to Ralphie, his Old Man was neither a Catholic, nor a Baptist, but he was a what?

Answer: Oldsmobile man

He was most definitely an Olds man, and he considered himself a professional at changing a flat tire. Just don't lose a lug nut or drop an entire hubcap, or the Old Man will lose it. The family car was a 1937 Oldsmobile Six F-37 Touring Sedan, with all the works. This is the scene where Ralphie accidentally says a curse word and gets to go home and get his mouth washed out with soap.
3. One would think that the setting of "A Christmas Story" might have been somewhere in the Midwest, and they would have been right. But what city did all this turmoil take place?

Answer: Hohman, Indiana

The location of the movie was the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana. Although there is no Hohman, it was Hammond, Indiana that writer Jean Shepherd got the inspiration to use for filming. If you think that the word Hohman has no real identity in Hammond, Indiana then you would be wrong. One of Hammonds main roads is called Hohman.
4. Ralphie did have a younger brother. The younger Parker was always teased by his brother and the kids in the neighborhood. One day his mother wrapped him so tightly for school that he looked like a lumpy red marshmallow. What was Ralphie's brother's name?

Answer: Randy

It was Randy who was the most taken advantage of. When he fell in the snow one day he was so wrapped up he looked like a slug, according to Ralphie. The school bully, Scut Farkus, was the one who push Randy down that winter morning. Randy liked to make his mother happy about him eating his dinner. One mention of his mother saying, "How do piggies eat?" is about all it took for Randy to smash hoards of mashed potatoes on his face and into his mouth.
5. On another freezing December day, Ralphie and some of his buddies set off for school. Eventually one of the boys gets "triple-dog-dared" to stick his tongue on the school's freezing flag pole since no one would be so foolish to do so. Who stuck his tongue on the flagpole?

Answer: Flick

It was Flick who succumbed to peer pressure that day. Eventually the fire department AND the police came to save Flick for every kid in the school to see. You might wonder, did Flick win or lose the bet? I mean he did the dare which was what he was supposed to do. Most consider him to lose the bet, however, because his wet tongue was frozen onto frozen flag pole and he couldn't remove it by himself or his tongue might fall off.
6. You might think Ralphie and Schwartz stayed outside to help their incapacitated buddy, but no, they didn't. Instead, the late bell rings and both of them run up to the classroom where their teacher and classmates were already there. What was the name of their teacher?

Answer: Miss Shields

Miss Shields is played by Canadian actress Tedde Moore. It was Miss Shields, who in Ralphie's dream, listens to Ralphie's essay on what he wants for Christmas. After he finishes his glowing masterpiece and Ralphie is done with his performance, she tells him, "You'll shoot your eye out." She does give him an A +++++ though.

Maggie Smith played Miss Jean Brodie. Anna Leonowens was the teacher in "The King and I". Ms. Norbury was a teacher in "Mean Girls".
7. Each week leading up to Christmas, Ralphie religiously listens to a radio broadcast message to receive clues he can use to decipher with his "Little Orphan Annie" Decoder Ring. Ralphie once again gets bamboozled, and eventually can tell it's only a glorified commercial. What message did the announcer tell Ralphie to always drink?

Answer: Ovaltine

Ralphie is sadly frustrated that he spent all this time only to be sold a cruddy can of goods. The narrator tell the listeners to do this, "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine!". Leading up to the final show sponsored by Ovaltine, the radio announcer gives the listeners a letter and a number each week so they can use with their trusty decoder ring to figure out the clues. To find out the secret message you would need to turn the inner and outer rings until it made sense.
8. Christmas was not only a big affair at the Parker's house, but Aunt Clara loved to surprise the boys with her unique gifts. What present did Aunt Clara get for Ralphie for Christmas?

Answer: Pink bunny suit

The Old Man wasn't too sensitive enough at home to tell everyone that Ralphie looked like a deranged Easter bunny. And you guess right that Ralphie didn't want to put it on and walk down the stairs with it. His mother "insisted" that he put it on. It was a one-of-a-kind made entirely by Aunt Clara. Eventually that day he is allowed to take it off once Aunt Clara is gone.
9. It's late afternoon in the Parker home and the Old Man is relaxing by reading the daily paper. Moments later the Bumpus' hounds push open the screen door and eat the family Christmas turkey. Now what are they going to do?

Answer: Get Chinese

Yep, they get Chinese. It's one of the best parts of the movie. As the four sit there awaiting their roasted duck dinner, the employees have a special treat. The manager/owner has the group of Chinese employees sing "Deck the Halls", which they do well and with great enthusiasm, except for the difficulty singing incorrectly, "Fa-Ra-Ra-Ra-Ra..." instead of the proper "Fa-La-La-La-La..." The cherry on top was when the chef takes a meat cleaver and chops off the duck's head making the mother to nearly pass out. Definitely a Christmas to remember.
10. The most magnificent part of the movie is the day when the Old Man proudly wins a Major Award. Crated in a wooden box with the word "FRAGILE" stamped on the outside, it prompts the Old Man to say, "It must be Italian." What does he happily receive that he displays in the front window much to his wife's chagrin?

Answer: a fish-net stocking leg lamp

His wife absolutely hated the leg lamp. The Old Man, on the other hand, had it placed center-cut right in the middle of the living room door for all the neighbors to behold. Unfortunately, his wife "accidentally" (on purpose) bumps the lamp, knocks it over, and breaks it into a bazillion pieces.
