Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I've started my massive movie marathon with some Shakespeare. In this film, a prince seeks vengeance against his uncle for the murder of his father. I see lots of famous actors - Derek Jacobi, Julie Christie, Charlton Heston, Kate Winslet, and even Robin Williams and Billy Crystal! What four-hour film directed by Kenneth Branagh am I watching?

Answer: Hamlet

This movie contains the entire text of "Hamlet", which had never been done for any "Hamlet" film adaptation before. Branagh's other Shakespeare films include "Much Ado about Nothing", "Henry V", and "As You Like It". On the DVD, Branagh says that Shakespeare belongs to everyone and shouldn't have to be performed with British accents, so the non-British actors speak in their native accents.
2. The next movie is from Sweden. It follows two children from a theatrical family; after their father dies, their mother marries a strict priest. Name the film.

Answer: Fanny and Alexander

"Fanny and Alexander" exists in two versions: a three-hour film version and the five-hour, four-part television version. Isak's nephew is played by a woman, Stina Ekblad, and the Bishop's aunt is played by a man, Hans Henrik Lerfeldt.
3. Now I'm watching a Japanese film directed by Akira Kurosawa. A war lord dies, and his vassals replace him with a thief who looks just like him so that the lord's enemies don't attack his clan. What film is this?

Answer: Kagemusha

"Kagemusha" means "Shadow Warrior" and was Kurosawa's last film to feature Takashi Shimura. Some international versions run shorter than three hours. "Seven Samurai" is another lengthy Kurosawa film and the basis for "The Magnificent Seven".
4. Time for a war movie. I've got a four-hour film, starring Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen, about a battle of the American Civil War. Which 1993 film is it?

Answer: Gettysburg

Both actors also appear in Vietnam War movies. Tom Berenger acts in "Platoon" with Charlie Sheen. His father Martin Sheen stars in "Apocalypse Now", which also exists in a 202-minute version called "Apocalypse Now Redux".
5. David Lean directed a lot of long movies. The one I'm watching has a motorcycle accident, a mirage at a well, Alec Guinness, and epic scenery - I wish I had a bigger screen! What movie can't I take my eyes off of?

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

The film follows historical figure T.E. Lawrence, who leads the Arab revolt against the Turks in WWI. Following its initial theatrical run, the film was cut down to about three hours for television and was restored to its original length of about 220 minutes in 1989. Alec Guinness appears in all of these movies except "Ryan's Daughter".
6. Now I've got "Napoleon", a silent French film from 1927 about the early life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Is there a widescreen sequence anywhere in the film?

Answer: Yes

Director Gance experimented with a wider screen by filming with three cameras at once and projecting three film reels next to each other, turning three 4:3 ratio frames into one massive 4:1 frame, to give a wider scope to certain scenes. The widescreen format didn't become widespread until "The Robe" came out in 1953. "Napoleon" begins with the man's childhood and ends with his invasion of Italy in 1796.
7. Next, I'm watching a film based on a 19th-century book. It begins with the protagonist's father dying in a duel. The hero fights a duel himself, has to leave his home country, fights in two armies during the same war, becomes a professional gambler, and then meets his future wife while she's married to a lord... all before the intermission! What's the name of this slow-paced film?

Answer: Barry Lyndon

Stanley Kubrick directed this film based on William Makepeace Thackeray's book "The Luck of Barry Lyndon". The movie has been renowned for its photography; night scenes are lit with nothing but natural candlelight. Kubrick's no stranger to long movies; in 1960, he released another lengthy film called "Spartacus".
8. Next is a sports film/musical from India called "Lagaan", in which poor Indian farmers play a game against British soldiers. If the villagers win, they don't have to pay their village tax, or lagaan, for three years; if they lose, they must pay triple lagaan. What sport, popular in both India and Great Britain, do they play?

Answer: Cricket

The area has had a drought; the villagers may die if they have to pay even the normal tax, and the British have asked for double this year. Protagonist Bhuvan mocks cricket (because it looks so similar to one of their Indian games), which leads to the challenge. The cricket match takes up almost half of the film's running time.
9. I'm seeing an Andrei Tarkovsky film now. "Andrei Rublev" is based loosely on the life of the monk of the same name. What else is the "colorful" Rublev?

Answer: Painter

Rublev is a Russian monk who wanders through 15th-century Russia and paints religious icons in churches. An illuminator is someone who adds decorative illustrations to hand-written manuscripts, often Bibles.
10. Oh dear - I'm going for a triple feature now! I'm spending the last day of my long-movie marathon watching "The Godfather Part II", "The Deer Hunter", and "Once Upon a Time in America". What actor do I see in all of these movies?

Answer: Robert De Niro

De Niro also appears in "1900", a film that runs more than five hours in its original cut. "The Godfather Part II" and "The Deer Hunter" both feature Cazale.
