Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the only crew survivor steal?

Answer: a coat

The mechanic, Fraga (whose real name was Carlos Roque), the only flight crew member to survive the crash unhurt, was found virtually hidden beneath the coat he took from Nando's sister, Susanna.

Seemingly demented by the crash (perhaps shock), he isolated himself from the rest of the survivors, and eventually died from exposure.
2. Who directed this movie?

Answer: Frank Marshall

Frank Marshall is a highly prolific director, producer, actor and writer, along with other talents. He is the son of composer Jack Marshall, whose works provide the ambience for several television shows and movies.

In 1964 Frank attended Newport Harbor High School. Anthony Zerbe and Paul LeMat are alumni of the same school.
3. The pilot assumed they were near Chile just before the crash.

Answer: True

The pilot said ".. we're gonna go through a little weather on our approach.", as he believed the plane had just flown over Curico. He radioed this, received acknowledgement and was directed to turn north and descend to 10,000ft.

Unfortunately a fierce headwind had slowed them down so that in fact the plane was over Planchon (still within the mountains), not Curico.
4. What is Nando's last name?

Answer: Parrado

Nando Parrado, whose first name was really Fernando, organized and carried out the final expedition which succeeded in reaching help. He and Roberto Canessa left Antonio "Tintin" Vizintin behind so they could use his rations for extra sustenance.

They finally reached a human being in a valley near water. After throwing notes wrapped around stones, the rescue was accomplished.
5. Why was Alberto crying just before he passed away?

Answer: He felt so close to God.

Alberto's legs were broken by the plane seat he got caught under during the crash. Alberto helped the expedition along when he found a map, which, since he was immobile, must have been lying nearby his hammock.

He had been hoisted up beside another passenger, Frederico Arranda, who urged the medical students to pay more attention to Alberto.
6. What was used as cake and candle for both Raphael's and Carlitos' birthdays?

Answer: a snowball and a cigarette.

Carlitos took great delight in drawing out stories, including the fact that not only was it his birthday around the same time as Raphael's, but also his father's birthday.

Carlitos was the morale booster of the crowd, quipping frequently about pizza, and finding things to be cheerful about even in such a dire predicament. It was his narrative we heard at the beginning and end of the movie, where he was played by an uncredited John Malcovich.
7. Who played Roy Harley?

Answer: Kevin Breznahan

Roy Harley, the one asked to fix the radio, was the most vulnerable, seemingly over-sensitive passenger. He tagged after the team's captain like a puppy, and was especially hard-hit when Antonio was lost in the avalanche.

Kevin also played an uncredited busboy in the Harrison Ford movie "Regarding Henry".
8. Roberto found something on one of the expeditions, and said "delicious!" What was it?

Answer: toothpaste

Where some of the plane was found, Roberto Canessa found a box of chocolates and a tube of toothpaste, which he greedily squeezed into his mouth.

They also found photos, among which was one of a birthday cake. It was at this juncture they left a note on the broken-off piece of the plane, indicating the remaining survivors.
9. What was the last sentence in the movie?

Answer: We were brought together by a grand experience.

John Malcovich (playing Carlitos Paez), in a reflective role, related his perspective on the journey and ordeal that claimed the lives of many of his friends.

He reminded us that there can be measureless joy in the simplest things if you make up your mind to appreciate life.
10. Where was "Alive" actually filmed?

Answer: The Canadian Rockies

The Canadian Rockies provided the movie's Andes Mountains.

Nando Parrado was brought on as technical advisor. He as well as a few other survivors were shown the film site and were amazed at how closely real it was.
This story was first dramatized by a Mexican production called "Survive!" ('75). "Alive" and "Survive!" were based on the true story written by Piers Paul Read ~ "Alive: The Miracle of the Andes".
