Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the hull number of the USS Dallas?

Answer: 700

USS Dallas (SSN-700) is the thirteenth Los Angeles class submarine to be built. The class began at hull number 688. After the movie, the crew of the real-life USS Dallas adopted the phrase "The Hunt is On!" as the unofficial motto of the submarine.
2. "It is an ancient Hindu text. Quoted by an American," says Captain Ramius, defending his wife's diary from Political Officer Putin. What was the last name of the American quoted in the diary?

Answer: Oppenheimer

The man was J. Robert Oppenheimer, the designer of the world's first atomic bomb. The words from the diary are what Oppenheimer said after he realized the destructive power of what he had created... and fit equally well with Ramius's impression of the Red October.
3. What musician did Jonesy once listen to, using the sub's BSY-1 sonar processor as a sound system?

Answer: Paganini

Although Chief Watson continues to mistake it for Pavarotti, Jonesy corrects him several times... "It was Paganini." Incidentally, Chief Watson is played by an actor named Larry Ferguson, and in at least one scene, he wears a name tag that says "Ferguson" instead of "Watson".
4. Finish this quote: "And like Beethoven on the computer, you have labored to produce... a ____."

Answer: biologic

Beaumont: "A what?"
Jonesy: "A whale, Seaman Beaumont. A marine mammal that knows a heck of a lot more about sonar than you do."
5. What does Borodin think he may need two of, after all?

Answer: Wives

After thinking of all he will do in Montana, Captain 2nd Rank Vasily Borodin jokingly decides that perhaps he will need two wives.
6. Who does Captain Ramius quote at the end of the movie?

Answer: Christopher Columbus

Ramius: "'And the sea shall grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams of home.' Christopher Columbus."
Ryan: "Welcome to the New World, Captain."
7. In reality, who does Tupolev have room for in his heart?

Answer: Tupolev

Although it is rumored that Captain Tupolev has a special place in his heart for Marko Ramius, Ramius himself dispells that idea, saying, "There is little room in Tupolev's heart for anyone but Tupolev."
8. What does Captain Ramius call Commander Mancuso when he first sees him?

Answer: A buckaroo

Although Ryan translated it as "some kind of cowboy", Ramius clearly called him a "buckaroo".
9. Who said this line? "This business will get out of control. It'll get out of control, and we'll be lucky to live through it."

Answer: Admiral Painter

Admiral Josh Painter said this aboard the USS Enterprise, after a damaged F-14 is forced to crash land on the flight deck.
10. What one word describes Jack Ryan and is the reason why he was sent to make contact with Ramius, according to Ryan and National Security Advisor Jeffrey Pelt?

Answer: expendable

Pelt: "I can't send one of those characters to do it. First off, they don't believe in it. Second, they'd never stake their careers on a hunch, whereas you..."
Ryan: "Are expendable?"
Pelt: (pauses) "Something like that."
11. Finish this quote: "Now listen carefully, Commander. That torpedo did NOT self-destruct. You heard it hit the hull. And I..."

Answer: was never here

Admiral Greer flashes his CIA credentials at the fire control officer aboard the USS Reuben James, and thus the matter is closed. Incidentally, the name of the character at the fire control station was Lieutenant Commander Mike Hewitt. Mike Hewitt is a real person, a Navy Captain who was a technical advisor for the movie. The character was named in his honor.
12. "We must give this American a wide berth." Where does Ramius point to on the chart after giving the order to turn South?

Answer: Laurentian Abyssal Plain

Now that Ramius knows that Ryan deduced his plan, he directs the Red October to the Laurentian Abyssal Plain, where the water is deep enough to effectively fake the submarine's sinking. Although the Laurentian Abyss is off the Labrador Coast, it is a specific location to which Ramius points.

The Reykjanes Ridge is the location of "Red Route One", and the Neptune Massive is the rock formation that marks the beginning of "Red Route One".
13. In the final credits, the following line appears: "Stanley" as Himself. Stanley actually has only a few moments of screen time, and shares it with two actors. What two actors are on screen at the same time as Stanley?

Answer: Alec Baldwin and Louise Borras

Stanley is a bear. Specifically, Sally Ryan's stuffed bear. Sally (Louise Borras) holds Stanley up and requests that Jack give him a goodbye before leaving for the airport. Caroline Ryan (Gates McFadden) appears briefly afterwards, but Stanley is already off the screen. Later on, Jack and Greer (James Earl Jones) briefly discuss Stanley in Greer's office, and towards the end of the movie, Ryan has purchased a "brother" for Stanley, and we see him as the British Airways stewardess (Denise James) tucks Ryan into his seat.

Incidentally, Stanley's "brother" makes another film appearance in the 1988 action film "Die Hard"!
14. According to the pilot, how long is the fuel reserve on a US Navy SH-3 Sea Sprite?

Answer: 10 minutes

Pilot: "Yes sir, I have a ten-minute reserve, but I am not allowed to invade that except in time of war."
Ryan: "If you don't get me on that sub, that may be exactly what we'll have, you got me? Now, you have ten minutes of fuel, we stay here ten more minutes!"
15. What was the name of the book Jack Ryan wrote about Admiral Halsey?

Answer: The Fighting Sailor

He tells this to Captain Ramius when they are waiting for the Konovalov's torpedo impact aboard Red October. Of course, Ramius had read the book, and completely disagreed with Ryan's conclusions.
