David's mother sends him to meet his little brother, Jeff, in the woods to walk back home with him. Jeff jumps out of a tree and scares David. Jeff runs home. David's dog then wanders from him and David follows him to a ravine. While looking down, David slips and falls into the ravine.

In 1986, David walks into his old house believing it is still 1978 and he still lives there. The new residents call the police and he is brought to the police station. The officers pull up a missing person's report of David Scott Freeman. According to the report he was last seen 4th of July, 1978, wearing a blue striped shirt, and carrying a backpack. David is dressed the exact same way he was eight years ago and hasn't aged at all. On the way to his parent's new house, the officers ask David who the president is.

He tells them Jimmy Carter. These are some of the reasons the officers are amazed and confused.

Answer: Dr. Faraday believes David is connected to a mysterious aircraft.

Seeing his parents for the first time in 1986, David faints from the shock of seeing how much they've aged and how different they look. The hospital David is taken to ,after he faints, runs several tests on him. Even though David has no memory of what happened or where he's been for the past eight years, the tests reveal he has information of a mysterious aircraft found by NASA earlier that day. Dr. Faraday, from NASA, thinks there is a connection between David and the aircraft.

David has been hearing something calling him for days, but he can't understand what it is saying. Early one morning the voice calls to him for help. R.A.L.F. the meal delivery robot, comes to David. He hides inside R.A.L.F. and is taken out of his room. The guards don't suspect a thing.

The name of Max's species is too long and hard to pronounce for David. So, he calls him Max. Here is some fun trivia for you. Credited as Paul Mall, Paul Reubens does the voice of Max. He played Pee-Wee Herman in the 80's tv series and movies.

Trying to be a friend to David, Carolyn, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, tells Mr. and Mrs. Freeman that their son is flying in a spaceship that NASA had at the base.

The first time Max took David, it was to study him. Max put star charts in David's brain, but never got them back. This is why Max calls to David at NASA. Max can't get home without the star charts.

Max comes from the planet Phaelon. This is where Max takes David to study him.

David doesn't want to stay in 1986. His family and life have completely changed and he knows that NASA will never leave him alone. He asks Max to take him back, even though he could possibly die.
