Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Released in 1979, what film sees Laurence Fishburne floating on the Nung River?

Answer: Apocalypse Now

In some quarters this is considered to be the greatest war movie of all time, it is certainly very dark and powerful. Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) and a group of misfit soldiers journey up a Vietnamese river, on a mission to execute a rogue colonel. Green Beret Kurtz (Marlon Brando) has set himself up as a God among the local tribes, and the army wants him dead! Over time Willard begins to admire the colonel, and the viewers are drawn into Willard's inner fight between killing Kurtz, or joining him.

The movie is based on the book "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad.
2. In 1975 this movie was unleashed on the public. It features Richard Dreyfuss on a boat called Orca. What is its name?

Answer: Jaws

"Jaws" was one of the first "summer blockbusters" and a true classic. The plot is simple yet effective and perfectly directed by Steven Spielberg. A huge great white shark is terrorizing a small New England island community and attacking the day-trippers. Three men decide enough is enough, and go out in pursuit on a tiny boat.

The adventure on the boat is what makes the film what it is. But I for one, love the beginning of the movie as the tourists are eaten one by one!
3. It's 1999, and Helena Bonham Carter appears at a testicular cancer help group! What movie am I describing?

Answer: Fight Club

This movie is a masterpiece of modern film making, a clever satire and bone crushing fight movie. The insomniac narrator (Ed Norton) descends into madness and bouts of cathartic fist fighting. Lead by Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), he creates an underworld of violent fighting clubs as the movie spirals towards the most amazing twist.
4. In 1999 Heather Donahue is lost in the woods at Burkittesville, Maryland. Which spooky movie is this?

Answer: The Blair Witch Project

Three amateur filmmakers venture into the woods in search of a local legend. A year later their cameras are found and the footage is pieced together. Intense dialogue and shaky camera work build towards a very scary ending. This was a massive cult hit, and in my opinion, one of the greatest low budget films of all time.
5. Based in 1988 this movie has Jake Gyllenhaal attending Middlesex Ridge High School. Released in 2001, what movie is this?

Answer: Donnie Darko

"Donnie Darko" is one of the most original characters of modern times. Saved from certain death by a vision in a dream, Donnie embarks on a voyage of discovery. Lead by a man sized rabbit called Frank, he floods the school and exposes a pedophile self-help guru living in his town.

It sounds weird and it is, but it is captivating to the last second. "Donnie Darko" is a slow burning cult classic.
6. This film came out in 1996 and has Frances McDormand investigating a kidnapping in snowy Minnesota and North Dakota. What film is it?

Answer: Fargo

This is the best Coen brothers movie, in my opinion. A pregnant, small town police officer slowly unravels a complex kidnapping case in the frozen upper Midwestern wilderness. Quirky characters, great music and dialogue coupled together with the winter scenery create a truly original movie.
7. Which 1973 classic has Max von Sydow in a bedroom, standing beside a floating bed?

Answer: The Exorcist

This is often voted the greatest horror movie in polls. A young girl is gradually possessed by a demon, much to the dismay of her mother. Reluctantly she calls in two priests to perform an exorcism, then the fun starts! The feelings of menace and unease throughout the whole movie stay with you for hours, if not days, after it finishes.
8. This crime thriller sees Uma Thurman dancing at Jack Rabbit Slim's. Released in 1994, which of these movies am I describing?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

If you can understand the plot twists and the interesting way the movie is put together you will love this classic. It follows the misadventures of a group of midrange Los Angeles criminals, as they twist and turn through an assortment of interesting and violent situations. Quentin Tarantino's direction and wonderful script bounce off the screen and create a tense atmosphere throughout the whole film.
9. Based on a true story, which 2001 movie has Ewan McGregor in Mogadishu, Somalia?

Answer: Black Hawk Down

This is a gritty and realistic war movie. When the mission to capture a Somali warlord fails, the members of the American task force are stuck behind enemy lines, they have to fight for their lives for over 24 hours to get to safety. Ridley Scott's movie is fast moving and powerful, and is my second favourite war movie.
10. Which 1982 Sylvester Stallone movie sees the main character trapped in an old mine shaft?

Answer: First Blood

This was the template for many "one man fighting machine" action movies during the eighties. Vietnam vet John Rambo is arrested by the overzealous sheriff of a small North Western American town. He escapes into the local forests with nothing but his survival knife and his instincts. Pursued for several days by army reserves, Rambo evades many attempts at capture, and begins to home in on the sheriff.
