Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the very beginning of the movie, who refuses to accept the command of the Union forces?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Lee goes on to command the Army of Northern Virginia. Winfield Scott, of the Mexican War, states that it is the biggest mistake Lee has ever made. Lee refuses command of the Union forces because he believes that his first and greatest duty is to his state, secondly to his country. He opposes the idea that Federal government can control state government.
2. Finish this quote, spoken by Robert E. Lee. "I have no greater duty ____."

Answer: "than to my home."

This is why Lee refuses to accept command of the Union forces. He has no greater duty than to his native state. Although he had served in the United States Army in the Mexican War, he now follows his state into the Confederacy. Lee makes this quote at the very beginning of the movie, when he refuses the President's proposal that Lee command the Union forces.
3. Name the general who has to order his Union troops up the hill at Fredericksburg, even though he strongly disagrees with the plan of attack.

Answer: Winfield S. Hancock

In the movie Hancock went to Burnside, who was then in command of the Army of the Potomac, and pled with him to change his strategy. Burnside refused, and the battle was a bloody failure.
4. Name the Beale family's slave woman, who stays at the Beales' house in Fredericksburg, even when it is overtaken by Yankees.

Answer: Martha

Although Marth loved the Beale family dearly, she states later in the movie how much she wants to die free. She also wants her children to be free.
5. Finish this quote, spoken by Anna Jackson. "Nonsense, Thomas. She is very like you. She rises early, _____."

Answer: "and she loves to be held in my arms."

This quote was spoken after the first time Jackson laid eyes on his daughter. Anna was Jackson's second wife. His first wife and baby died, leaving Jackson heartbroken, yet not bitter. Anna and the new baby brought great joy to his life.
6. Name the colonel under whom Joshua L. Chamberlain serves in the 20th Maine.

Answer: Adelbert Ames

When Ames was promoted in 1863, Chamberlain was given command of the regiment.
7. Which of the following is the last line in the poem that Mrs. Chamberlain quotes to her husband?

Answer: Loved I not honor more

Chamberlain didn't tell his wife that he had arranged to join the Union Army, and it is said that she was angry at first.
8. What does General Jackson say as he eagerly waits to carry out his strategy at the Battle of Chancellorsville?

Answer: "The Virginia Military Institute will be heard from today."

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is where many of Jackson's troops were from, and where he instructed cadets before the war.
9. Who is in command of the Army of the Potomac, at the Battle of Chancellorsville?

Answer: Joseph Hooker

"Fighting Joe" Hooker didn't heed warnings that Lee's army might be nearby, and his troops were caught completely by surprise. He was so confident and proud, that he convinced himself that Lee would not attack. The Battle of Chancellorsville is considered Lee's masterpiece, and one of the worst losses for the Union Army.
10. What are Jackson's last words before he dies?

Answer: "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."

The general was accidentally shot by his own men in the dark at Chancellorsville, but died days later of pnemonia. This statement was his last.
