Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1999) Steve Miner directed this black comedy about a gigantic, man-eating crocodile, that is regularly fed cattle by a doting Betty White.

2. (2001) These animated monsters keep their city supplied with power by capturing the screams of children, in this Pixar film featuring the voice talents of Billy Crystal and John Goodman.

Answer: Monsters, Inc.

It takes one little girl, who refuses to be frightened, to teach them that the energy that comes from laughter is far more powerful than the energy that comes from fear.

Answer: Little Shop of Horrors

Rick Moranis plays a geekish florist who dreams of romance with his co-worker Audrey. Steve Martin is a little over the top as a sadistic dentist. Directed by Frank Oz, of Miss Piggy and Yoda fame.
4. (1993) The monsters in this Steven Spielberg classic are huge, and they've been engineered using the latest scientific techniques. Their existence, after millions of years of extinction, is nothing short of miraculous...that is until the power goes out, and the monsters take control of the island.

Answer: Jurassic Park

Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough star in this very frightening movie. Spielberg does a wonderful job of building suspense, using a simple glass of water on the dashboard. The water ripples in concentric circles with the impact tremors of the approaching dinosaur. This effect was created by attaching a guitar string underneath the dash, right below the glass.
5. (1991) The monsters in this movie are human. One eats his victims with a nice chianti, while the other makes a suit out of women's skins.

Answer: Silence of the Lambs

The F.B.I. need to catch the serial killer 'Buffalo Bill'. Unfortunately the person that holds the key to Bill's real identity is himself a monster, the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins. Answer: Young Frankenstein

Gene Wilder plays Dr. Frankenstein, a rather inept doctor who suddenly finds himself inheriting his grandfather's estate, after years of trying to live down the family reputation. Once he enters the castle, he becomes obsessed with replicating his grandfather's work. Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr and Cloris Leachman round out the cast, in this film that was shot with the same lab equipment, and in the same castle, as the original, 1931 version.
9. (1999) Once the most trusted advisor to the Pharaoh, High Priest Imhotep was sentenced to the most horrific death of being mummified alive. Centuries later he is accidently awoken, and he's determined to have his revenge.

Answer: The Mummy

Stephen Sommers directs this comedy/horror that is set in 1923, and stars Brendan Frasier, Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo. Weisz is brilliant as the brainy, but bumbling librarian, who is years ahead of her time in her approach to women's rights.

When Farrow becomes pregnant, the neighbours become a little too attentive, and she is plagued by strange dreams. She begins to suspect that some kind of horrible deal has been struck between her husband, who has become very successful at work, and her neighbours.

But she soon finds that anyone she tries to tell is in on the conspiracy.
11. (1979) A monster in the purest sense of the world, this creature gained entry to the spaceship when it became implanted in the stomach of a crew member. There it incubated until it erupted from the man's stomach, scoring its first killing with its birth. Hiding in the ship, it grew at an alarming rate, killing off the rest of the crew one by one. All except Ripley, who managed to outsmart it and make sure that it never succeeded in reaching Earth.

Answer: Alien

Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, and John Hurt starred in this horror film, under Ridley Scott's direction. Apparently Scott wanted to shoot a much darker ending, where the alien won, but 20th Century Fox wouldn't go for it.
12. (1988) This monster hires himself out as a 'bio-exorcist', to get rid of any pesky humans who might be cluttering up your house. To find him, all you need to do is say his name three times.

Answer: Beetlejuice

Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis play a young couple who are surprised to find themselves dead, after a car accident. But being dead isn't the worst of their problems, they're really having a hard time accepting the loud and obnoxious new owners of their house. When their best efforts fail to scare the intruders away, they decide to hire Beetlejuice to do the job for them.

But instead of killing each other, they form an unlikely alliance, and come to realize together that the only way that Einon's cruelty can be stopped, is for Draco to die first.
14. (1981) A vicious beast attacks two young students, killing one and maiming the other. The survivor is nursed back to health, but is plagued by horrible nightmares of his dead friend, urging him to kill himself. Then he finds that very strange things start happening to him when the moon is full.

Answer: An American Werewolf in London

David Naughton and Griffin Dunne star in this movie that was directed by John Landis. It was also written by Landis in 1969, when he was only 19 years old. The special effects used for Naughton's transformation into a werewolf are something to see, even 20 years later.
15. (1983) This monster might be the scariest one of all, because he could all too easily be real. How would you like to be trapped by a rabid St. Bernard? Based on a novel by Stephen King.

Answer: Cujo

Donna Trenton and her son Tad are trapped in a car by a rabid St. Bernard. The problem is that nobody knows they're there, and with her husband gone on a business trip, nobody is going to notice them missing. And if that isn't bad enough, they haven't got any food or drink, and it's getting very hot out there. Actually, five dogs, one mechanical head and a guy in a dog costume were used in the filming.
