Ed is starting to feel like his reality is about to change. He is putting the pieces together, desperately trying to figure things out before time slips away.

2. As Ed is sitting there alone, he recites the poem, "I saw a man who wasn't there..." (from the beginning of the movie), and at the same time, someone is trying to speak to him. Who is this?

Answer: The doctor

Ed is now between two worlds, but thinking that he is totally Ed, and not someone else. He has no idea who he really is.

Answer: "Did I blackout again?"

Ed is plucked from one realty to another, as he processes his own conclusions at the motel, but feels transported to another reality. A familiar voice speaks to him. He knows the doctor's voice, and answers calmly.

Answer: "Why are you telling me all this?"

Seeing Ed at the hearing, and away from the motel is so surreal. He is now trying to figure out the mystery associated with being in the room at the hearing.

Ed slightly smiles, hesitates, and then responds, "What?" John Cusack is so perfect in this scene. The audience feels complete sympathy to Ed. He can't imagine what the doctor is saying to him, is the truth.

Ed is terrified and he asks the doctor, "What did you do with my face?" He wonders how he can possibly be someone else. His identity
on-screen, switches over to Malcolm's. Malcolm goes into a tantrum over losing his identity with Ed, his life in Los Angeles, and his problems at the motel that he is trying to solve.

When Malcolm escapes back into Ed's character and situation at the motel, he stands away from the motel. He is seeing things in a new light, but he knows he needs to return to help the people that are left, and hopefully solve the crimes.

The action speeds up here and everybody wants this all to come to an end. Rhodes is now the paranoid character, as he realizes that Paris knows who he really is. He must stop her from telling Ed and Larry. All Rhodes wants to do is get in the truck and leave, but no one can tell him where the keys to the truck are.
