Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The following poem serves as the opening words of the movie, supposedly written by the tragic killer/convict, Malcolm Rivers (Pruitt Taylor Vince). "As I was going up the stair, I met a man that wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish, I wish ________."

Answer: he'd go away

In the opening scene of the movie, a doctor sits and flips through a diary/scrapbook. He recalls talking to his patient, Malcolm Rivers, asking him where he learned that poem. He says he made it up when he was a kid. The poem is famous. He lied about making it up.
2. The doctor asks Malcolm what else he remembers from when he was a kid. What does Malcolm say three times in a row?

Answer: "Don't beat around the bush."

The doctor recalls more of his conversation with Malcolm. When the doctor asks him what else he remembers, it makes Malcolm nervous, hence repeating the same sentence three times. Malcolm knows that the doctor is trying to get him to talk about his troubled childhood. He remembers his mother, who he calls a whore. Her name was Callie Rivers. She left him alone a lot.
3. What was Malcolm Rivers arrested and convicted of?

Answer: Killing six people

The doctor continues to flip through the diary, coming across newspaper articles about the slayings of six people, including Malcolm's mother, at the Lakeworth Apartments on May 10, 1998. There's a picture of Malcolm at the time of his arrest. He was just a boy.
4. The night before his execution, why does Malcolm Rivers get a new hearing, in order for his lawyers to re-argue the insanity plea?

Answer: They find Malcolm's diary that had been suppressed during the trial.

A group of prosecutors, a judge, the doctor, Malcolm's attorneys and Malcolm have a hearing, the night before his execution, because someone discovers that Malcolm's diary had been suppressed during the trial. This allows his attorneys to re-argue the death penalty, and they only have that night to do it. The next day he is to be executed by lethal injection.
5. That same night, we switch over to a motel in Nevada. It's pouring rain, and flooding the roads. A desk clerk named Larry is drinking, and watching what game show on TV?

Answer: Wheel of Fortune

Larry wants the contestant to buy a vowel, while he keeps pouring shots of alcohol. I think the drinking, while watching "Wheel", is a regular thing with Larry.
6. A car pulls in front of the motel's office, backing into the office door. A frantic man comes into the office, carrying his wife. What does he say twice?

Answer: "She won't stop bleeding!"

The man's wife has just been hit by a car and has a huge wound in the neck. It's a big gash and she appears to be unconscious.
7. Who hits the woman?

Answer: A limo driver

The limo driver, Ed, played by John Cusack, is one of the most heroic characters in modern movies. He is so much more than a limo driver. He is a self-proclaimed, but humble, ex-cop and ex-medic. He is calm under pressure. He can handle anything.
8. What is Ed, the limo driver, doing when he hits the woman?

Answer: He is hunting for a spare cell phone battery for the actress he is driving.

The actress is played by Rebecca DeMornay. She thinks the spare cell phone battery is in the Louis Vutton duffel. She is yelling at the limo driver, Ed, and he looks away at a precise moment in time, hitting the woman.
9. The woman that is hit by the limo, is holding an umbrella for her husband, while he changes a tire. Their son is in the car looking at his mother. Mother and son are pressing their hands on either side of the car window. The son backs up from the window. She loses her balance and falls backward, getting hit by the car.

Answer: False

The son is inside the car staying nice and dry, while his parents are outside dealing with the tire. The mother stops to play with her son, while still holding the umbrella for her husband, and gets caught up in the moment of her son's game. He backs up from the window. She backs up into the road and gets hit.
10. How do they get the flat tire?

Answer: They run over a high-heeled shoe.

Paris, played by Amanda Peet, the hooker, is searching for her lighter, and starts going through her suitcase while driving a convertible. The stuff in the suitcase starts flying out of the car, including her high-heeled shoe.
11. Ed tries to go to the nearest hospital to get help for the injured woman. He picks up Paris, the hooker, played by Amanda Peet. What is the name of the book she sees on the seat of the car?

Answer: Being and Nothingness

Ed and Paris have an immediate connection. They know that they can trust each other, even as strangers. It's something you can see in their eyes when they look at each other. Paris tells Ed that the road is flooded, but he says he has to try.
12. Their car gets stuck in the flooded road. A young couple comes by. Ed and Paris get in the car. They stop at the motel. They all go into the motel office. Paris tries to check-in first.

Answer: True

Larry, the desk clerk, doesn't like Paris, because he figures out her line of work immediately. He has an unusual dislike for Paris. Larry tells Paris that they don't rent rooms by the hour.
13. Meanwhile, Caroline Suzanne, the actress, is in her room trying to talk on the phone. She is losing her signal. She takes the shower curtain from the bathroom. She goes outside in the rain, while trying to talk on the phone. What happens to her?

Answer: She gets killed.

She has just walked off the set of a film and is having Ed drive her back to Los Angeles. She is so obsessive about the cell phone and her career, that she can't think of anything else. She really doesn't know what hits her when she is murdered.
14. Ed is in his room resting, and hears a noise. He goes outside, and walks around the motel. He is lead to the sounds coming from the laundry room. He listens carefully to the sounds from the dryers. The last dryer to stop contains what?

Answer: The decapitated head of the actress.

They never find her body. Larry, carryng a bat, and the cop, played by Ray Liotta, walk into the laundry room. They see Ed staring into the dryer at the head of the dead actress.
15. Ed stitches up the woman that he hit with the limo, while Larry and then George, the husband, watches. What does Larry wish he had?

Answer: Beige thread

After Larry wishes he had beige thread, George, the husband, stands behind Ed watching him stitch his wife with black thread. He asks Ed where he learned to do that. Ed says that he learned to do it, pretty much from where George is standing. Ed learned by watching.
