Sam has just graduated from high school, but doesn't yet know what path she wants to take in life. She lives with her Uncle Emmett, a troubled Vietnam veteran. Sam is interested in the Vietnam experiences of Emmett and his veteran friends, because her father died there before she was born.

The movie ends with an emotional visit to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., by Sam, her paternal grandmother and Emmett. "In Country" (1988) also stars Joan Allen, John Terry and Kevin Anderson. Bruce Willis earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

Kathie had shot Sterling and stolen money from him, but Sterling wanted her back. Jeff finds Kathie and falls in love with her himself.

They try to keep their relationship a secret, but Jeff's former partner finds them and is killed by Kathie. Jeff disappears and changes his name. He's living quietly in a small town until one of Sterling's goons recognizes him. Jeff is summoned to Sterling's to do another job, and is surprised to find Kathie there. Jane Greer played the female lead, Kathie Moffat, in "Out of the Past".

In "Against All Odds" (1984), she plays the female lead's mother, Grace Wyler.

The remake stars Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods.
