Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gone With the Wind

1939: directed by Victor Fleming, 'Gone With the Wind' was adapted from the novel by Margaret Mitchell. It starred Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. Other actors included Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland and Hattie McDaniel.

The story of the willful Scarlett has remained in the public eye, although the film has attracted some criticism for its portrayal of the black American characters and showing slavery as being acceptable.
2. Singin' in the Rain

1952: this musical comedy starred Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. Stanley Donen and Kelly himself directed it and also created the choreography for the various musical numbers. The songs included 'You Are my Lucky Star', 'All I Do is Dream of You' and, of course, the title song.

The plotline revolves around the transition from silent movies to those with sound, with Kelly's character having his roots in vaudeville before transitioning to the movies. The most famous scene involves Kelly dancing (and singing) in the rain, holding his umbrella whiles splashing around in a heavy downpour.
3. Thunder Road

1958: the hint was needed as there is an unrelated film from 2018 which used the same title. The 1958 film was directed by Arthur Ripley and was based on a short story written by Robert Mitchum who both starred in the movie and produced it.

Mitchum plays a man running an illegal moonshine business who is trying to prevent his younger brother from following the same path. He also has to contend with a takeover bid from a ruthless gangster who sees the profits to be made and government officials who are trying to collect taxes.
4. Play Misty for Me

1971: 'Play Misty for Me' was the first film to be directed by Clint Eastwood, who also played the lead role. He appeared opposite Jessica Walter in the role of Evelyn.

Eastwood plays a radio DJ who receives regular calls from Evelyn asking him to play the song 'Misty', giving the film its title. She becomes even more obsessed with the DJ, leading to death and injury to him and others around him.
5. Purple Rain

1984: Albert Magnoli directed the film 'Purple Rain', which took its title from the song by Prince, who also made his acting debut in the film. He was keen to make a film and the script was based on his own ideas, fleshed out by William Blinn, an established screenwriter.

The plot features Prince as a character known as The Kid, leader of a band which appears regularly at a local night club. The appearances are shared with two other bands, one of which is led by a particular rival to The Kid. The film culminates with a performance of the title song as The Kid comes to realise how badly he has behaved to his band members.
6. Twister

1996: 'Twister' really did feature the wind named in the title. Directed by Jan de Bont, it starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman among many others in an ensemble cast.

Hunt plays a meteorologist who saw a father killed by a tornado when she was a child, sparking her interest in the weather phenomenon. Paxton plays her estranged husband, who joins her in tracking a particularly severe tornado which she wants to test with a new device.
7. The Perfect Storm

2000: this is another film where the bad weather plays a major part in the plot. Based on a book by Sebastian Junger, the film was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starred George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Diane Lane.

The story of the ill-fated fishing boat, the Andrea Gail, and the sudden, unexpected weather conditions the crew face when heading back to port does not end well for anyone involved.
8. The Wind that Shakes the Barley

2006: 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' was directed by Ken Loach with Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney taking the lead roles. The title comes from a folk song about an early Irish rebellion.

The film is set in the 1920s in the early days of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) at a time when Ireland was still under the control of the United Kingdom. Murphy and Delaney play brothers, who join the IRA to fight against British rule. A ceasefire and treaty, meant to bring peace, divides the brothers leading to a tragic outcome.
9. Cloud Atlas

2012: 'Cloud Atlas' is a science fiction film with a stellar cast - Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant as just some of them. The actors all play multiple roles during the movie.

The plot involves several different times, staring with 1849 and ending in the future, in 2321. Each timeline features different characters, with each playing six different, and unrelated, characters across the time periods. The actors also take leading and supporting roles as the times change.
10. Thunderbolts*

2025: the film belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe series and was distributed by Walt Disney Studios. As you'd expect, the film involves various superheroes from Marvel Comics with actors including Florence Pugh and Wyatt Russell taking part.

The film starts with the destruction of a laboratory on the orders of the director of the CIA, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has set a trap meant to kill those carrying out her orders. The intention is to cover up her illicit work. As they are superheroes, the plan fails and the group takes on the villains using their powers.
