Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The owner of the chocolate factory, Mr Willy Wonka, has been played by two different actors, but which of them was the first to play the character?

Answer: Gene Wilder

Gene Wilder has had a long and successful movie career and is probably best known for his role as Jim in "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and the several movies he made with Richard Pryor including "See No Evil, Hear No Evil" and "Silver Streak".
He played Mr Willy Wonka in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) but was by no means the first choice for the role. Many other actors had been offered the role, including the third Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee, who had to decline the role as it conflicted with his "Doctor Who" commitments.
2. In "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971), there were five children who found golden tickets; two were from America and two were from England. Where did the final child call home?

Answer: Germany

In this adaption, Augustus Gloop is quoted by a journalist as being from the fictitious town of Dusselheim in Germany. The nationality of Augustus Gloop is never disclosed in the Roald Dahl story, however both film adaptions portray the character as hailing from Germany.
3. What member of Charlie's family who did not appear in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) did appear in the 2005 adaption?

Answer: Charlie's father

Charlie's father did not appear in the 1971 movie adaption but was re-introduced in the 2005 adaption and was played by Noah Taylor. In the 2005 adaption, Charlie's father has just lost his job which is devastating for the family as they are already very poor.

After Charlie's visit to the factory is over, his father attains a new job repairing the machine which had replaced him at his previous job.
4. In "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971), Mr Wonka uttered several remarks after each child's "demise". Which child earned the remark "She was a bad egg"?

Answer: Veruca Salt

In the movie, the visitors and Mr Wonka were standing in a room with several huge geese. Mr Wonka explained these geese lay golden chocolate eggs for Easter and the eggs are sorted by what Mr Wonka referred to as an "eggdecator" which keeps good eggs and drops bad eggs down a garbage hatch.
At this point Veruca performed a musical number proclaiming her many selfish wants and during the process climbed onto the eggdecator which immediately dropped her down the garbage hatch. This prompted Mr Wonka to utter the mentioned phrase.
5. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) had many songs throughout the film. Which of the characters sang the following lyrics? "I never thought my life could be, Anything but catastrophe, But suddenly I begin to see, A bit of good luck for me. 'Cause I've got a golden ticket, I've got a golden twinkle in my eye."

Answer: Grandpa Joe

This song was sung by Grandpa Joe after Charlie told him that he found a golden ticket. Charlie wanted Grandpa Joe to accompany him to the factory so Grandpa Joe, who had been confined to a bed for years, attempted to retain his mobility whilst singing this song.
6. 2005 saw a new adaption of the story reach cinemas starring an all new cast. Who was the young actor who played Charlie Bucket in this adaption?

Answer: Freddie Highmore

Highmore reportedly gained the role of Charlie after a recommendation from Johnny Depp with whom he had co-starred in "Finding Neverland".
7. One addition to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005) was a back story to the character of Willy Wonka. It involved details of his traumatic childhood at the hands of his father. What was his father's profession?

Answer: Dentist

Willy Wonka's father was a dentist and was played by the wonderful Christopher Lee. In the film, Wonka's father tried to discourage him from eating chocolate by telling him that some people are allergic to chocolate. Coincidentally Johnny Depp, who played Mr Willy Wonka, was allergic to chocolate as a child.
8. Veruca's "demise" in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) occurred in a room full of large geese. Which animal contributed to Veruca's "demise" in the 2005 adaptation?

Answer: Squirrels

In the 1971 adaption, geese laid golden chocolate eggs for Easter and the eggs were assessed for quality by the "eggdecator". In the 2005 adaption, nuts in shells were assessed by Squirrels to ascertain their quality. Forty live squirrels had to be trained to pounce upon Veruca during the filming of her "demise" scene. More were added using CGI after filming had been completed.
9. In "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005) there was something unique about the Oompah Lompahs that was not present in the 1971 adaption. What was it?

Answer: They were all played by the same man.

Deep Roy, who played every Oompah Loompah in the movie, had to repeat the same movements hundreds of times to create all the Oompah Loompahs. As each onscreen Oompah Loompah represented a separate performance by Deep Roy, his salary was extended to $1,000,000 for the movie.
10. Willy Wonka in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005) offered Charlie a place with him at his factory, but what did he tell Charlie that he could not bring with him?

Answer: His family

In this adaption of the story, Willy Wonka believed that families held people back due to his traumatic childhood at the hands of his father. It was only through reconciliation with his father that Wonka allowed Charlie to join him in the factory with his family.
