Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Leon was a professional hitman. He kept himself physically fit with diet and exercise. What was Leon's beverage of choice?

Answer: none of these

Leon would buy two quarts of regular milk from a local grocery store. The only beverage Leon was seen drinking throughout the entire film was milk.
Leon was very low-key and a real loner. He lived in New York, in a section known as Little Italy. He wore round tinted glasses and high water pants. His only means of transportation were his feet and public transit.
2. Leon had a twelve year-old neighbor named Mathilda. She was first seen sitting on the stairwell doing what?

Answer: She was smoking a cigarette.

When Leon was coming up the stairs, Mathilda took the cigarette out of her mouth and put it next to her. Leon asked why she hid it. Mathilda was afraid someone might tell her dad and she asked Leon not to say anything. Leon also asked about the bruise on the side of her face. She lied and said she fell off her bike.
Mathilda had a horrible home life. She loathed her physically abusive dad and older half sister. She also didn't care much for her stepmother. The only member of her family she loved was her four year-old brother.
3. Mathilda's dad worked for a disturbed and corrupt DEA officer named Stansfield. What did Mathilda's dad do for him?

Answer: He was a drug holder.

Mathilda's dad would take some of the dope but never enough to cause suspicion. However, this time Stansfield knew he messed with the product because it tested ninety percent pure instead of one hundred percent.
Mathilda's dad lied about not knowing what happened and Stansfield gave him until noon the next day to figure it out. Mathilda's family all died from gunshot wounds. After everyone was dead, one of Stansfield's men found the missing drugs inside an old radio.
4. Mathilda overheard Stansfield's men discuss the death of her brother. She walked past her apartment and straight to Leon's door. She knocked several times before Leon finally opened the door.

Answer: false

Earlier, when she was talking to Leon on the stairwell, she told him she was going to the grocery store and she'd buy him milk because she knew that's what he always bought. She couldn't believe what she heard when she returned from the store.
She was in tears and silently pleading by then as she rang his doorbell. She was relieved when she walked inside. She turned on the television and watched a cartoon called "Transformers".
5. Leon told her she had a rough day and allowed her to stay at his place for the night. What did Mathilda use as a teddy bear, the first night she slept at Leon's place?

Answer: oven mitt

The mitt's decor was of a pig with a blue ribbon. After Leon put a blanket on her, Mathilda held two of his fingers and told him, he was great with her. Leon felt uncomfortable by that remark and gesture. He turned off the light without saying goodnight.
Earlier, Mathilda told Leon the reason she was crying was because her brother was dead. She said she was more of a mother to him than her stepmother whom she called a pig. Leon told her not to insult pigs because they're far more nice than people. He made Mathilda smile when he performed a brief puppet show with the mitt.
6. What did Leon do while Mathilda was sleeping on the bed that first night?

Answer: He put a gun to her head and then went back to the living room.

Leon always slept in a recliner in the living room. Suddenly, he woke up, took the gun off the nightstand next to him, went to his gun case and screwed a silencer onto the gun. Then he went straight into his bedroom where Mathilda was sound asleep. He soon realized what he was doing and snapped himself out of it.

He looked at her for a moment to make sure he didn't wake her. He wasn't use to company and definitely not to someone staying over night with him. What made matters worse for him, was that the person in the next room was going through an extraordinary ordeal.

The next morning he had cereal on the table and told her when she was through eating she had to leave. She convinced Leon that her well-being became his responsibility because he opened the door for her and saved her from being murdered.
7. Leon began teaching Mathilda the basics of his trade. What did Mathilda teach Leon?

Answer: how to read

Mathilda wrote that note the morning he wanted her to leave, after spending that first night there. She wanted him to read the note, stating she wanted to be a cleaner. He took the note but he stammered when he tried to read it. She realized he didn't know how and he responded he was very busy and was behind in his reading.

She began educating him with a book about Socrates. Leon explained the first weapon she had to learn was the rifle and the last weapon was the knife. Leon took her on a roof with a rifle loaded with paint pellets and she shot a male jogger with one of the pellets. Also, Mathilda began cleaning the guns, working out, and drinking plenty of milk.
8. Mathilda and Leon played the game Charades. Who was the only celebrity Leon correctly guessed?

Answer: Gene Kelly

Mathilda became tired of the all work, no play regimen. When Mathilda did her own rendition of the song "Singing in the Rain", Leon's eyes widened and he had a look of recognition on his face. Mathilda was relieved he finally recognised one out of the four celebrities she impersonated. Leon watched a film called "It's Always Fair Weather" at the movie theatre when he lived in solitude. So, he was familiar with the actor.

The celebrities Leon didn't know were Madonna, Charlie Chaplin, and Marilyn Monroe. Leon pretended to be John Wayne but Mathilda guessed Clint Eastwood. Leon and Mathilda's bond grew very strong.
9. Leon rarely spent any of his money and allowed his trusted employer and friend hold it for him. What was the man's name?

Answer: Tony

He once told Leon he was better than a bank because there were no forms to fill out and banks were always getting knocked off. He also kept all the numbers in his head and knew precisely how much cash Leon had.
He took Leon under his wing and gave him a lucrative job as a hitman. Each man Leon killed was worth five thousand dollars. One day, Leon sat down with his employer and requested that if something were to happen to him, he wanted Mathilda to have all his money.
10. Mathilda returned to her old apartment she shared with her family. What memento did she retrieve from there?

Answer: stuffed animal

It was a rabbit with floppy ears. It used to belong to her brother. Earlier, Mathilda told Leon that her brother would never cry but he would just cuddle up against her. She also saw the chalk outline of where he was killed and the tears instantly surfaced. Mathilda also retrieved thousands of dollars that was stashed away under one of the floor boards. Mathilda hid when Stansfield arrived with two other officers. Stansfield was aggravated about explaining what happened the day her family was murdered.

He told them he lost one of his men in the incident and if they had any more questions, they should come to his office. Mathilda memorized the address Stansfield gave to the other officers.
11. Mathilda finally came face to face with Stansfield. Where in the DEA building did this verbal confrontation take place?

Answer: men's restroom

Mathilda went to the building with guns and ammo in a brown paper bag and a box of pizza. Stansfield knew Mathilda was following him. He hid behind the door and closed it. The noise startled Mathilda and she turned around and looked at him. Stansfield popped one of his pills in his mouth and asked Mathilda her name.

Then he asked who sent her. She let him know, she had a personal vendetta against him because he killed her brother. Stansfield bent down to Mathilda's level so they were face to face.

He asked did she want to join her brother and she shook her head no. She was terrified and Stansfield enjoyed the frighten expression on her face. One of Stansfield's men came in there and told Stansfield that his right hand man named Malky was killed by an Italian hitman. Stansfield told him to take Mathilda to his office. Mathilda wrote a note to Leon that explained the situation.

The twenty thousand dollars was for him, if her attempt to kill the dirty cops responsible for her brother's murder failed. Leon went to the office and killed two more of Stansfield's men.

He rescued Mathilda once again.
12. Leon was able to get out of his apartment by pretending to be a wounded member of the SWAT team.

Answer: true

Although, it was not shown in the film. Leon changed into SWAT gear that he taken from a dead SWAT guy and put on a gas mask. When SWAT went inside his apartment, Leon was no where to be found. Then a hand went half way up and the SWAT members thought it was one of their own. Two members helped Leon down stairs. Stansfield assembled a SWAT team to kill Leon.

When that failed, he wanted everyone and anyone he could get from law enforcement. Leon knew it was time to get out of that apartment and fast.

He used an ax to break an opening in his wall where the kitchen's smoke fan was. He wrapped his plant in his trench coat and dropped it down the air duct. Then he convinced Mathilda to go down the shaft and not to worry because he was going to be with her soon. Relunctantly, she went down the shaft and hoped Leon would find a way out because the shaft was too narrow for him.
13. Leon was severely wounded and didn't think he had much longer to live. He lured Stansfield to a deserted alley and shot Stansfield. Then he blew them both up with a grenade.

Answer: false

Stansfield saw Leon and knew he was the Italian hitman he was after. Leon took the mask off for a brief moment because he was getting checked out by a medic. Stansfield told the police officers to move out of the hall way that led to the outside entrance.

Then, he waited for Leon to walk through the hall. Leon was unaware he was being followed. When he walked away during all the commotion. He took the gas mask off but kept the SWAT uniform on that had grenades attached to it. Leon went down the deserted hall way that led to the outside and Stansfield shot him. Stansfield confirmed to Leon who he was. Leon's last words were "This is from Mathilda".

He put the grenade ring in Stansfield's hand and died. Stansfield looked at all the grenades that were on Leon and knew he had no time to run away.
14. Mathilda returned to a boarding school for young troubled girls. What was the name of the school?

The headmaster of the school was a nun. Mathilda lied and said her family was in a car crash. The headmaster allowed Mathilda to come back to the school but only if she told the truth of what happened to her.

Then Mathilda told her about the DEA agents killing her family because of a drug problem, about Leon the hitman, and that if she didn't receive help from the school, she might die before nightfall.
15. What did Mathilda have to remind her of Leon?

In the end, Mathilda took the plant out of its pot and planted it in front of the school.
