Written by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, "Purple Rain" was released in the U.S. on July 27, 1984. It starred Prince, Appolonia Kotero, Morris Day and Clarence Williams III. Prince plays the role of 'The Kid', a talented musician but deeply scarred with personal issues.

He meets an attractive singer, Apollonia, and before long, they're a couple. While trying not to fall into the same steps as his father, with his self-destructive behavior, 'The Kid' fights hard to maintain his relationship with Appolonia, (though he loses her to Morris Day at one point), and keep his band, 'The Revolution', together.

"Computer Blue" was never released as a single in the U.S. Originally the time length was 7 minutes and 30 seconds long, but it was edited down to a mere three minutes and 56 seconds, to fit onto the soundtrack. Prince called this song, "Father's Song" due to the fact he included a guitar solo that his real father had written, (though it was played on a piano).

In 1993, "Time" magazine ranked "Purple Rain" as the 15th greatest album of all time. It was also ranked number 18 on VH-1's "The Greatest Rock n' Roll Albums of All Time". "Rolling Stone" listed it as the 72nd greatest album of all time.

Released on June 9, 1984 in the U.S., "When Doves Cry" was the very first single to be released from the soundtrack, as well as becoming Prince's first American song to reach number 1. "The Beautiful Ones" is another song that was produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Prince.
In the scene where Prince sings this song, he's onstage and is basically singing to Apollonia, pleading with her to choose him as her lover. Sitting with her is Morris Day. As the song comes to a close, Prince lies on the floor of the stage and Apollonia runs out crying.

In order to be released as a single, "Purple Rain" was shortened from being 8 minutes, 45 seconds, to 4 minutes, 5 seconds long. It was released in the U.S. on September 26, 1984, making it the third single to be released from the soundtrack. It reached number one on "Billboard's Hot 100 in 1984.
In my opinion, this is the best scene, and the best song of the entire movie. :)

Released in the U.S. on January 25, 1985, "Take Me With U" was the last single to be released from the soundtrack.
Apollonia sings this duet with him. It was supposed to be placed on her lbum, "Apollonia 6", but they put it on the "Purple Rain" soundtrack instead. A
It reached number 25 on the top 40 chart in the U.S. and reached #7 by February 1985.
