Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is introduced as "The Scorpion King".

Answer: The Mummy Returns

In 3067BC the Scorpion King is seeking to rule the world and he calls upon Anubis to provide him with an army to complete the task, in exchange for his soul. The wish is granted and his army does conquer the world, however, once the task has been completed Anubis claims the soul and the army, without its leader, sinks back into the underworld. Jump forward to 1933 and an Egyptian cult resurrects Imhotep using the "Book of the Dead" with the view to conquer the Scorpion King and then use his armies to take over the world. Rick O'Connell and his wife Evelyn get caught up in the struggle when they discover the Bracelet of Anubis, which has the power to lead the wearer to the Scorpion King's realm.

"The Mummy Returns" is a 2001 film in which Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell. It also marks the acting debut of Dwayne Johnson. Johnson would take on the role of King in the self titled prequel, a spin-off that premiered in 2002, before going on to a stellar career in films such as "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017) and the "Fast and Furious" franchise, commencing with "Fast Five" (2011).
2. Jason Statham is a highly skilled courier driver.

Answer: The Transporter

Statham plays the role of Frank Martin in the first three instalments of the "Transporter" franchise. We are introduced to his three rules in the first film, "The Transporter" (2002); (a) Once the deal is made, it is final (b) No names are mentioned and (c) never open the package. Problems arise for Frank when he breaks one of his rules in the first film... he opens the package and finds a bound and gagged woman.

Statham, a member of Britain's Commonwealth Games diving team in 1990 reprises the roles in the originally named sequels "Transporter 2" (2005) and "Transporter 3" (2008). An avid kickboxer and martial artist, he took to modelling and his breakthrough in film came on the back of two Guy Ritchie films "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" (1998) and "Snatch" (2000). From there he would move on to become one of the movie industry's most bankable stars.
3. Sonja Henie is a skating instructor in the Swiss Alps.

Answer: Thin Ice

Lili Heiser (Henie) works as a skating instructor in a luxurious hotel in the Swiss Alps. She gets tongues wagging when she starts instructing a guest by the name of Rudolph (Tyrone Power) whom, she does not know, is really a Prince.

"Thin Ice", released in 1937, is rather lightweight but it marked the acting debut of Henie, a three time Olympic ice-skating gold medalist. Henie would go on to star in numerous movies including, "My Lucky Star" (1938) and "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941) and, in her time, would be one of the highest paid stars in Hollywood.
4. Forest Whitaker is Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

Answer: The Last King of Scotland

This is a 2006 historical drama that was built on the book of the same name (1998), written by Giles Foden. It looks at the life of Idi Amin as seen through the eyes of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, a fictitious character played by James McAvoy. Whitaker, a high school quarterback, who was known for the intensity he bought to his roles in such films as "The Crying Game" (1992), "Platoon" (1986) and "Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai" (1999) would win an Academy Award for Best Actor in this role.
5. Dave Bautista and a group of extraterrestrial criminals steal a powerful artifact.

Answer: Guardians of the Galaxy

This 2014 superhero movie forms part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A group of criminals with different agendas, connected by Peter Quill's theft of a mysterious but powerful orb, is brought together with a common goal. Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer who teams up with the Guardians, initially as a means to escape the formidable prison known as Kyln. His ultimate goal is to kill the man who'd destroyed his family, Ronan the Accuser, but he winds up saving the Galaxy.

Bautista, who'd made his name as a professional wrestler in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), started his movie career with an uncredited appearance in "Relative Strangers" (2006), would have prominent roles in "The Man with the Iron Fists" (2012), "Riddick" (2013), the "James Bond" film "Spectre" (2015), "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) and "Army of the Dead" (2021).
6. Jim Brown is part of a team of criminals sent to kill German officers during WWII.

Answer: The Dirty Dozen

Jim Brown's Robert Jefferson has been sentenced to death for killing a man during a racial brawl. He is given a lifeline when enlisted along with eleven other inmates to participate in a dangerous mission behind enemy lines during World War II. All of the prisoners selected are either serving long sentences or, like Jefferson, have been sentenced to death. They are trained and led on this mission by Major John Reisman (Lee Marvin) who is constantly at odds with authority. This 1967 film featured an array of big name stars including Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland and George Kennedy.

During the filming Brown announced his retirement as the running back for the Cleveland Browns to pursue a career in film. He would also appear in "Ice Station Zebra" (1968) and the Blaxploitation film "Black Gunn" (1972).
7. Esther Williams is Australian swimming star Annette Kellerman.

Answer: Million Dollar Mermaid

In this 1952 bio-pic, a polio stricken Annette Kellerman (Williams) takes up swimming at an early age as a way to improve her health. When a teaching job for her father falls through she auditions for a part in the water ballet at the Hippodrome. She misses out on the part but draws attention when she enters a distance swimming event, then headlines when she appears in a provocative one-piece bathing suit for the event. Suddenly her whole world turns.

Williams was selected to compete for the US swim team at the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were subsequently cancelled as a result of World War II. Metro Goldwyn Meyer (MGM) spotted her swimming alongside Johnny Weissmuller and signed her up. Their intention was to use her to combat the popularity and influence of Sonja Hennie in films and it worked. At least one of Williams' films in each year between 1945 and 1949 would feature in the top twenty grossing films of the year.
8. Burt Reynolds is a bootlegger attempting to transport 400 cases of beer to Atlanta.

Answer: Smokey & the Bandit

Burt Reynolds is Bo Darville (the Bandit) in this 1977 road action movie and Jerry Reed is Cledus Snow (the Snowman) and the pair are seeking to transport the illegal beer from Texarkana through to Atlanta. Snowman is driving the truck but the Bandit is in a black Trans Am and his job is to distract the local sheriff, Buford T. Justice, played by Jackie Gleason. The idea is to place the attention on the Bandit, allowing the Snowman with a smoother run to his destination. The film is also notable for the appearance of Sally Field who generated a great chemistry on set (and off) with Reynolds.

Reynolds was a running back at Florida State before injuries curtailed his career. His acting career began with television appearances in "Gunsmoke" (1962-1965), "Hawk" (1966), and "Dan August" (1970-1971). His breakthrough role was in the film "Deliverance" (1972) but he made his name in movies as a lovable rogue and would be voted as the world's number one box-office star for five consecutive years (from 1978 to 1982).
9. Arnold Schwarzenegger's memory implant becomes all too real.

Answer: Total Recall

Based on the 1966 Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Get it for You Wholesale", "Total Recall" is a 1990 science fiction thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven and has Sharon Stone working alongside Schwarzenegger in the lead roles. Arnold's Douglas Quaid is introduced to us as a construction worker who gets tempted into getting a memory implant that will provide him with a memory of a thrilling adventure on Mars as a secret agent. Something goes amiss and he now finds that he really is a secret agent and is being pursued by a shadow organization that is determined to prevent him from recovering his past memories.

Schwarzenegger, who would win a "Mr Universe" bodybuilding title at the age of twenty, first ventured into films in 1977 with the movie "Pumping Iron". His major breakthrough would come with the success of "Conan the Barbarian" in 1982 but his popularity at the box office would sky-rocket two years later with the release of "The Terminator".
10. Andre the Giant aids a farmhand turned pirate rescue his true love.

Answer: The Princess Bride

This 1987 fantasy film, directed by Rob Reiner, sees the Princess Buttercup being forced to marry the creepy Prince Humperdinck but, before the wedding day, she is kidnapped by three outlaws, one of whom is Fezzik, played by Andre the Giant. They are then pursued by the Prince and a mysterious man in black who is revealed to be the Dread Pirate Robert. Robert, in truth, is the farmhand Westley, whom Buttercup is truly in love with but fears that he is dead. In a series of double crosses Prince Humperdinck steals Buttercup back and orders the death of Westley. Fezzick and his fellow "outlaw" Inigo team up with Westley to rescue the Princess.

This film represents Andre the Giant's crowning achievement in film. He was so proud of it that he'd gathered his wrestling buddies together for a preview viewing and had then watch it a number of times while he served them food and drink. An endearing story that emerged from this is that, whilst on set, Andre let go a fart that ran for sixteen seconds. A concerned Rob Reiner looked at him and asked "Are you alright", to which Andre replied "I am now". I don't know what is more disturbing, the duration of the flatulence or the fact that someone timed it.
