1. Which of these characters did NOT appear in the movie?

Answer: Kung Lao

There was a scripted, but not filmed, scene where the Earthrealm fighters were allowed time, by Shang Tsung, to mourn the death of Art Lean and bury him in "The Garden of Statues". He would have been buried underneath a statue of the Great Kung Lao, who was referred to twice in the movie - but never seen.

2. Who played Johnny Cage?

Answer: Linden Ashby

Brandon Lee was to play Cage, but died during the filming of "The Crow". Linden Ashby was cast as his replacement and looks set to reprise the role of Johnny Cage in the upcoming "MK: Devastation".

3. What is Jax's codename in the movie?

Answer: Cardinal

Sonya's codename was Blackhawk. Both codenames are heard when Sonya, Liu Kang and Johnny Cage are being transported from the large dragon ship to the island via smaller row boats. She radios back to her partner Jax, but gets no response. Then, when they step foot on the island, Liu Kang explains to Sonya that none of her equipment will work there (this is because they are between realms).

Jax is seen in two scenes at the start of the movie, both times helping Sonya hunt down Kano. It is interesting to note that he is the higher rank, yet she seems to be in charge.
Kitana has one fight scene but uses none of the special moves her video game counterpart possesses. Shao Kahn just shows up at the end so they could leave things open.

5. Who played Jax?

Answer: Gregory McKinney

For some reason Jax, as he is known in the games, is listed as Jaxx in the credits. Gregory McKinney tragically died in April of 1998 from a brain aneurysm.

6. Kano is killed by whom?

Answer: Sonya Blade

Trevor Goddard (Kano) died of a drug overdose in 2003. Also, after Trevor Goddard's portrayl of Kano in the film, his video game counterpart took on an Australian identity.

During Robin Shou's (Liu Kang) match with Talisa Soto (Kitana) he never once strikes her with a punch or kick. He instead blocks and counters her moves, preferring to throw or grapple instead of attacking her. It is the same case in his fight with Jade in the sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation".
