While Rafe is fighting in Europe, he is shot down and presumed dead. After he is declared dead, Danny and Evelyn become involved and she becomes pregnant. Rafe is in fact not dead, he shows up to find that Danny and Evelyn are together. Rafe and Danny volunteer for the Doolittle raid where only Rafe returns and he and Evelyn marry and he raises Danny's child as his own.

In desperation, he commits suicide. As a result of his suicide, Peyton suffers a miscarriage. Penniless and out of work, she finds a job as nanny for the Bartel family.

She blames her problems on Claire, her new employer and she plans to get her revenge.
