Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1935 version of "Mutiny on the Bounty" was the first film in history to have three actors nominated for an Academy Award for best actor: Clark Gable, Charles Laughton, and Franchot Tone. Of the three, which one won the Best Actor Oscar?

Answer: None, the award was won by a man in another film.

The 1935 Oscar for Best Actor was won by Victor McLaglen for his role in "The Informer".
2. After the mutiny, what was the name of the ship that was used to search across the South Pacific for Fletcher Christian?

Answer: Pandora

In the movie, the Pandora returned to Tahiti and took aboard the remaining members of Fletcher's mutiny. The Pandora ran aground, never finding Fletcher and the Bounty.
3. When Roger Byam (played by Franchot Tome) is compiling a dictionary of the Tahitian language, what English word does he specifically comment on as being too complicated?

Answer: Look

Byam is perplexed about how a different word is used for "look upward", "look downward", "glance sideways", etc.
4. What incident finally pushes Fletcher Christian to mutiny?

Answer: Viewing several punished men bleeding and starving below the deck.

All of these incidents contributed to Christian's disdain for Bligh, but it was viewing the bleeding and starving men below the deck that pushed him to mutiny. Christian freed the men who became some of his most loyal mutineers.
5. There is a point in the movie during which Bligh seems to realize that his authority may be challenged. The incident occurred at dinner one night. Bligh attempted to give Christian, the doctor, and other important members of the ship a certain food. After none of the men accepted this food from Bligh, he felt that they were against him. What was this food that Christian and the others refused?

Answer: Cheese

After everyone had refused, Bligh commented on remembering that Christian had a particular fondness for cheese. Bligh interpreted the men's refusal of the chesse as an attack on his authority.
6. When the Bounty lands in Tahiti, there is a scene in which a native man gives one of the shipmen a coconut and tells him to drink it. What does the shipmen say after drinking from the coconut?

Answer: "Come on, they have cows here that lay eggs".

This is one of the movie's funnier lines. It seems odd not knowing what a coconut is, but in 1789 England I guess it wouldn't be that uncommon.
7. Where did Fletcher Christian take the Bounty for its final destination?

Answer: Pitcairn Island

Knowing that they would be hanged if found, Christian desired a place as inaccessible as possible. Pitcairn Island's rocky coast was not suitable for landing a large ship. Therefore, the Bounty had to be run aground. Christian and the others burned the ship to conceal the evidence of their location.

Interestingly, some Bounty wreckage can still be found in the waters off Pitcairn Island.
8. What was the Bounty's original aim, when it left Portsmouth in 1789?

Answer: Transport breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies

This was mentioned several times throughout the movie. Obviously, the breadfruit was never taken to the West Indies. To relieve the boat of excess weight, some of Christian's men threw plants from Tahiti overboard.
9. The Bounty's surgeon, Dr. Bacchus, was a character who told grand stories that everyone seemed to enjoy. Repeatedly, he compared others' hardships as minor compared with what hardship of his own?

Answer: Losing a leg

The Doctor constantly tells stories about how he lost his leg. Interestingly, he tells different groups of people different stories about the leg. His death, which Christian blamed on Bligh, brings much sorrow.
10. What is the ultimate fate of Roger Byam?

Answer: He is convicted of mutiny, but he is eventually released and then returns to the seas.

Byam's speech, defending himself and condemning Bligh, is one of the most powerful and memorable speeches that I have seen in movies. Although the speech does not change his sentence (to be hung), it helps the tribunal see the evil in Bligh's methods. Byam is seen at the end of the movie on another ship about to set sail.
