Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Number 10 on my list is a Woody Allen favorite. The story follows an ophthalmologist and his extramarital affair which ends in tragedy. A moral dilemma full of introspection and guilt follows, with the man questioning his faith and his will to confess to a crime. What 1989 film fits the description?

Answer: Crimes and Misdemeanors

Martin Landau plays Judah Rosenthal. He hires his brother, played by Jerry Orbach, to kill his mistress (Anjelica Huston).

Another storyline follows the woes of Cliff Stern (Woody Allen), a struggling independent filmmaker who is hired by his brother-in-law (Alan Alda) to film his biography. The comedic progression of Cliff's job ends up with him making a complete mockery of his employer.

The movie also stars Mia Farrow, Claire Bloom, and Sam Waterston.
2. Number nine is a 1990's groundbreaking writing achievement which left millions of stunned viewers ready for many repeat viewings. A hitman is suffering a moral dilemma. He is questioning whether he should continue with his career, or become a better person. His change of heart is prompted by "what alcoholics refer to as: a moment of clarity". What movie is this?

Answer: Pulp Fiction

All the movies listed tell the story of a hitman considering a career change. But, Samuel L. Jackson's character, Jules Winnfield, is definitely the coolest of them all when quoting the Bible before "popping a cap" in a captivated victim.

His partner Vincent Vega (John Travolta) scoffs at Jules' desire to give up "the life" for a chance to just "walk the earth". Vincent calls him a bum and says their boss will most certainly laugh at Jules' new view of his own existence.
3. Number eight would fall into the mafia movie category. Good cop, bad cop. Rats in the mob, rats in the police department. Just another day committing and fighting crime in Boston. Hint: This Martin Scorsese film won him his first Oscar. Can you remember the title of this stellar 2006 movie? Tell me then!

Answer: the departed

"The Departed" was the most celebrated film at the 2006 Oscar Ceremony. Not only did it win Best Director (Scorsese), but also Best Adapted Screenplay (William Monahan), Best Film Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker), and Best Picture.

Similar to other Scorsese mafia flicks, this movie has a swift and consuming story progression which keeps the viewer stuck to the screen for what seems like a short time, but is well over two hours. The title and theme song don't materialize for an astounding 18 minutes into the movie.
4. Number seven on my list is a Western. A tragic event. A man hired to avenge this event. A big dramatic development. And, a really big shootout at the end. Oh wait, that sums up pretty much every Western ever made! Hint: Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman. Which movie is it?

Answer: Unforgiven

This 1992 masterpiece was also a big hit at the Oscars.

This is the last Western made by the seasoned Clint Eastwood (who is definitely an icon of the genre) in the twentieth century.

Morgan Freeman co-stars as Eastwood's partner, Ned Logan. They both get swept up in the aftermath of the initial tragic event which ultimately leads to Ned's death, which is avenged by Eastwood's character, William Munny.

This movie is a perfect example of the Revisionist Western subgenre.
5. Number six on my list is possibly the best 'chick flick' ever made. Infidelity. A passionate love affair. A plane crash. Hint: The two leading roles are played by an actress who may wear Prada, and an actor who created the Sundance film festival. Which movie could it possibly be?

Answer: Out of Africa

Sydney Pollack's sweeping visuals and John Barry's soaring score make this movie unforgettable, also in the depth of the story based on the autobiographical works of Isak Dinesen (Meryl Streep). Robert Redford plays her love interest, Denys. In spite of her marriage of convenience to another man, she spends most of her time with Denys. They go on safari, go hunting, listen to Mozart, and have deep discussions about love and human relationships as compared to the animals (with whom Denys identifies).

This movie won seven Oscars for the year of 1985.
6. Number five was the first movie of its kind to show graphic scenes in war battles. I think this movie could be summed up in one quote: "FREEDOM!". Hint: The leading actor has also played roles with such names as: Graham Hess, Bret Maverick, and Martin Riggs (to name a few). What's the title of this movie?

Answer: Braveheart

"Braveheart" falls under the genre of Epic film and subgenre of Historical Epic. It paved the way for many other movies in the genre like "Gladiator", "Kingdom of Heaven", "Troy", "300", etc.

"Braveheart" won two Oscars: Best Picture and Best Director for Mel Gibson.

"Braveheart" has many interesting goofs since it has so many quick shots and was heavily edited. Notable goofs are: a guy seen wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, and, at the Battle of Stirling, a CAR on the battlefield.

Not very historically accurate! These goofs can be seen in the widescreen version of the film.
7. Number four is a sci-fi staple and a part of a very successful film franchise. A woman scorned. Hell hath no fury like a flamethrower. Look out big mama! Which "Alien" film best fits that description?

Answer: Aliens

Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) wreaks havoc on the nest of aliens in James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986). She torches the queen alien's brood chamber and forces her into a classic woman-to-woman final battle.

The use of flamethrowers throughout the franchise is not seen in "Alien 3". Instead they use hot lead to kill the alien.

In the fifth "Alien" installment, "Prometheus", Charlize Theron's character also uses a flamethrower.
8. Number three on my list is a Coen brothers cult classic. "All The Dude ever wanted was his rug back". "They're gonna kill that poor woman!". "The Dude abides". These three quotes are taken from which 1997 movie?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

"The Big Lebowski" stands firm as the ultimate cult classic of the 1990s.

The movie contains so many quotable quotes, that it may be possible to have an entire conversation with another person just using quotes from the movie.

Jeff Bridges is the lead role, but is also a self-professed real life example of The Dude. He used some of his personal clothes during the film production. He also would routinely ask the Coens, during filming: "Did The Dude burn one on the way over?".
9. Down to number two on the list. A girl is misunderstood by her family and friends. She takes a trip to another place. When she gets there, she is met with bewitching havoc, starvation, and eventually gets swept up in a stupor. She does, however, return home to find a more enriching and supportive environment. Hint: 1939. Which movie could it be?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

"The Wizard of Oz" is a timeless film. Its cross-generational appeal makes it AFI's number one Fantasy Film of all time.

It is the second movie on my list because the end always makes me cry.

I was shocked to realize that the director of this film also directed "Gone With The Wind", in the same year! Victor Fleming directed two of the most popular and successful movies of all time in 12 months! Simply amazing.
10. And finally, my number one favorite movie of all time stars Kevin Costner. A man travels to find a better life. He is met with many losses throughout the movie, including his own identity. Which is the only movie listed that shows Costner's character molded into a different person, with a different name, by the end of the story?

Answer: Dances with Wolves

"Dances with Wolves" ruled the 1990 Academy Awards winning a total of seven Oscars. Among the wins were Best Picture and Best Director (both for Costner) and Best Music (John Barry).

The movie has two versions including a four hour director's cut. In the director's version, we can better understand the mystery of why Fort Sedgewick was deserted upon Dunbar's arrival. Also, the deep friendship between Dances with Wolves and Kicking Bird is further explored. We also see a more human side to chief Ten Bears. In addition to his obvious control over his tribe, we are privy to private conversations with his wife and Kicking Bird showing his more common side.
