Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elizabeth Imbrie, "The Philadelphia Story" (1940)

Answer: Ruth Hussey

In George Cukor's classic romantic comedy "The Philadelphia Story", socialite Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) must, on the eve of her second wedding, choose between her fiancé (John Howard), her ex-husband (Cary Grant), and a reporter (James Stewart). Witness to the process is Elizabeth Imbrie (Ruth Hussey), a photographer who has infiltrated the pre-wedding festivities with Stewart to obtain an article for a tabloid magazine. Hussey more than holds her own in the ensuing twists and turns which end with her being the bridesmaid after Tracy has made her choice. Imbrie was nominated in 1940 for Best Supporting Actress for this role.
2. Lucy Mancini,"The Godfather" (1972)

Answer: Jeannie Linero

One of cinema's memorable bridesmaid moments was the one from Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film "The Godfather" when the maid of honour Lucy Mancini (Jeannie Linero) slips away to have sex with Sonny Corleone (James Caan). The scene helps to establish the contrast between the more impulsive, violent Sonny and his more even-tempered brother Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). Pacino was initially interested in the Sonny role, but Coppola felt Pacino was better suited to Michael, a role that would earn him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
3. Buffy Brenner, "A Wedding" (1978)

Answer: Mia Farrow

Robert Altman's 1978 comedy "A Wedding" takes on the world of society weddings, with skeletons toppling out of closets left and right. Between the wedding planner and the groom's grandmother dropping dead, to a tornado that requires the guests to take refuge in a cellar just when the cake is about to be cut, nothing goes smoothly.

The bridesmaid moment occurs when Buffy (Mia Farrow), the maid of honour who is the bride's nearly mute sister, announces to the groom that she is pregnant with his baby.

She also takes off her clothes in front of a naked portrait of her sister.
4. Dot Matrix, "Spaceballs" (1987)

Answer: Joan Rivers

In Mel Brook's "Star Wars" spoof "Spaceballs", the maid of honour is a female droid based on C-3PO. When Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) runs away in a Mercedes spaceship on the eve of her wedding to Prince Valium (Jim J. Bullock), she takes Dot Matrix with her. Along the way they meet renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) who has been sent to save her from would-be kidnappers. Dot Matrix's "virgin alarm" saves the day when Vespa and Lone Starr get a little too chummy.

Not your run-of-the-mill bridesmaid task. Joan Rivers provided the voice for Dox Matrix and Lorene Yarnell was the body actor.
5. Sally Albright, "When Harry Met Sally" (1989)

Answer: Meg Ryan

Carl Reiner's romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally" follows the relationship of two friends as they bumble their way from friendship to being. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play the lead roles. One of the most memorable scenes features a now-famous faked orgasm.

The bridesmaid moment comes shortly after the couple's first sexual encounter, which did not end well. Sally tries to keep up a happy appearance when she and Harry must stand opposite each other as the best man and maid of honour at their friends' wedding.

Inevitably they fail and a massive argument follows, their own happily ever after left for another day. The scriptwriter Nora Ephron loosely based the character of Sally Albright on herself and drew on interviews with the producer Andy Scheinman and the director Carl Reiner for Harry.
6. Julianne Potter, "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997)

Answer: Julia Roberts

P.J. Hogan's romantic comedy "My Best Friend's Wedding" follows the efforts of Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) to sabotage the wedding of her best friend, Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney). When the two were in college years earlier, they had made a pact to marry each other if they both were still single at 28.

A few weeks before the fateful date, Michael informs Julianne he that is going to marry Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). Asked by Kimmy to be her maid of honour, Juliette uses her position to do everything she can to break up the couple.

A real Dr Jekyll-Mr Hyde wedding attendant.
7. Kym Buchman, "Rachel Getting Married" (2008)

Answer: Anne Hathaway

Jonathan Demme's film "Rachel Getting Married" explores the impact of a family tragedy on its members. Kym Buchman (Anne Hathaway) gets out of a drug rehabilitation program to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt). On the surface, Kym resents her sister for choosing someone else to be the maid of honour, and Rachel, in turn, resents her for the attention her drug addiction is taking from the wedding. Guilt and resentment bubble to a head and the two face together the tragedy of their younger brother's death years before.

After they achieve a degree of reconciliation, Kym ends up standing as her sister's maid of honour. Anne Hathaway received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the film.
8. Jane Nichols, "27 Dresses" (2008)

Answer: Katherine Heigl

In Anne Fletcher's romantic comedy "27 Dresses", Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has a closet full of dresses from the 27 weddings in which she has been a bridesmaid. In one scene, Heigl models all 27 of them for Kevin Doyle (James Marsden), a reporter who turns out to be Mr Right.

At the inevitable happily-ever-after wedding at the end of the film, all 27 of the brides turn up wearing the bridesmaids' dresses. Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna based the film on the experiences of one of her friends.
9. Annie Walker, "Bridesmaids" (2011)

Answer: Kristen Wiig

Paul Feig's comedy film "Bridesmaids" was co-written by Kristen Wiig, who plays the role of Annie Walker, a single woman whose life has been falling apart and has been asked to be the maid of honor for her best friend, Lillian Donovan (Maya Rudolph). Jealously on the part of the other bridesmaids help lead to a series of misfortunes, including everything from an emergency plane landing on the way to the bachelorette party to a bout of food poisoning that strikes all but one of the bridesmaids. The low-budget film was a huge success and grossed over $288 million world wide.
10. Jordan Baker, "Great Gatsby" (2013)

Answer: Elizabeth Debicki

Baz Luhrmann's romantic drama "The Great Gatsby" is based on the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is the character who weaves the threads of the film together and is the person Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) uses to get closer to his former love Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Nick, who is Daisy's cousin, gains many of his insights from Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) who was the maid of honour at the marriage of Daisy and Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).

Her memories are the starting point for the flashback of both the wedding and Gatsby's first meeting with Daisy, but she is a more tepid character in the film than she is in the book.
