Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main female character of the movie was Sherrie Christian, a small-town girl who moved to Los Angeles. What happened to Sherrie almost immediately after arriving in LA?

Answer: Her suitcase was stolen.

The movie opened with Sherrie on the bus to LA, singing the song "Sister Christian" while she flipped through all of her beloved records in her suitcase. When she got off the bus and was walking around LA, a man approached her, grabbed her suitcase and ran off. Drew, the male lead character, saw this happen and went to help Sherrie. The thief was gone and Sherrie was most upset at having lost all her records. Drew got Sherrie a job at his workplace, The Bourbon Room club/music venue. Drew also later found Sherrie's stolen records at a record store and got them back for her.

Drew and Sherrie were played by Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough.
2. The Bourbon Room was having money troubles and hoped to make a lot of money by having rock star Stacee Jaxx perform. Stacee had gotten his start several years earlier at The Bourbon and was returning to perform one final show with his band. What was the name of his band?

Answer: Arsenal

Stacee Jaxx was a typical arrogant rock star. When "Rolling Stone" reporter Constance Sack interviewed Stacee at The Bourbon, she mentioned that he had a reputation for being a pain to work with and implied that he was being kicked out of Arsenal, rather than independently deciding to go solo. In the film, Stacee Jaxx was played by Tom Cruise, who did all the singing himself.

Dennis Dupree, the owner of The Bourbon Room, was having financial trouble due to unpaid taxes and hoped that hosting the final Arsenal show would bring in a lot of revenue.
3. Where did Drew take Sherrie on their date?

Answer: The Hollywood sign

After getting a Sherrie a job at The Bourbon, Drew began to fall for her. He asked her out and they went to the Hollywood sign on their first date. The song "Waiting For a Girl Like You" was the main soundtrack to this scene. Drew and Sherrie began dating after this; montage scenes showed them spending a lot of time together, largely hanging out in Drew's bedroom.
4. Who appeared in the movie as Mike Whitmore, the mayor of Los Angeles?

Answer: Bryan Cranston

Bryan Cranston is best known for his TV roles, as the dad in "Malcolm in the Middle" and the main character in the hit show "Breaking Bad". He also had recurring roles in "Seinfeld" and "The King of Queens".

In the movie, the mayor's wife, Patricia (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones), launched a crusade to have The Bourbon Room shut down because she felt that rock and roll was ruining Los Angeles. She said that she once knew a girl who loved Arsenal's music and had engaged in a sexual relationship with Stacee Jaxx that left the girl brokenhearted. This later turned out to not be entirely true.
5. Sherrie slept with Stacee Jaxx on the night of his performance at The Bourbon Room.

Answer: False

During his meeting with the "Rolling Stone" reporter Constance Sack, Stacee Jaxx felt a connection with her and they almost had sex, but she decided it was a bad idea and ran out of the room. Sherrie entered his dressing room shortly after to bring the bottle of scotch he'd wanted. Drew then happened to see Sherrie leaving Stacee and saw Stacee zipping his pants up, which had come undone in his encounter with Constance. Drew assumed Sherrie had slept with Stacee, and broke up with her. At the end of the movie, the misunderstanding was cleared up and they got back together.

In contrast, in the Broadway show, Sherrie does have sex with Stacee Jaxx at The Bourbon.
6. After Sherrie quit her job as a waitress at The Bourbon Room, where did she end up working?

Answer: At a gentleman's club

After Drew thought Sherrie cheated on him and dumped her, she thought it was because he thought he was too good for her after getting his chance to perform his music at The Bourbon. She quit her job and while walking around the city, was found and taken in by Justice Charlier, the proprietress of the Venus Club, a strip club that called itself a gentleman's club. At first Sherrie just waited tables at the club but soon found herself dancing, to earn more money.

Justice was played in the movie by Mary J. Blige.
7. When the opening act for the Arsenal show at The Bourbon cancelled at the last minute, Dennis gave Drew and his band (who turned out to be other workers at the club) the chance to play. After this show, Stacee Jaxx's manager, Paul Gill, took on Drew as a client and eventually put him in a boy band called what?

Answer: The Z Guyeezz

Drew was all in favour when Gill offered him a chance to become famous, but was much less enthused when it turned out that he would need to join a boy band in order to get any investors for a record or tour. Drew became Joshy Z, the leader of The Z Guyeezz. Anytime the group was referred to simply as The Z Guys, the speaker was corrected and told that it was actually Guyeezz. The Z Guyeezz were booked to play at The Bourbon Room, but Paul Gill failed to tell Dennis Dupree that he was sending a boy band to perform at the club; he told him Stacee Jaxx would be there performing his first solo show. The Z Guyeez did go on stage at The Bourbon but were booed and had things thrown at them, so Drew quit and re-adopted his rock persona, Wolfgang Von Colt.

Paul Giamatti played the role of Paul Gill.
8. Who was, apparently, Dennis Dupree's love interest in the movie?

Answer: Lonny, his faithful employee

Partway through the movie, Dennis and Lonny were in the club, talking about the dire financial situation. Suddenly the moment became a bit tense and they started singing "Can't Fight This Feeling" to each other. Their relationship was not really further explored in the movie though.

Dennis Dupree was played by Alec Baldwin and Lonny by Russell Brand. As much as I liked this movie, I think the biggest thing wrong with it was that Russell Brand did not play Stacee Jaxx. Given his performances as an egocentric rock star in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek", the role seemed tailor-made for Brand. But, perhaps he wanted to avoid being typecast.
9. Money garnered from Stacee Jaxx's performance at The Bourbon Room ultimately saved the club from its financial troubles.

Answer: True

Directly after the performance, when Dennis excitedly counted all the money they'd made, Stacee's manager Paul told Dennis about Stacee's cut and all the fees that needed to be paid, taking just about all the money from Dennis (unbeknownst to Stacee). Stacee later read about this in Constance's article in "Rolling Stone" and fired Paul. He had the money given back to Dennis.
10. What became of Patricia Whitmore's campaign to close down The Bourbon Room and drive rock and roll out of L.A.?

Answer: It fizzled when it was revealed that she'd been an Arsenal groupie.

In the end, Stacee Jaxx decided he was in love with Constance and tried to reach her by calling her at her magazine. He was told she was at The Bourbon Room covering the Stacee Jaxx show - that Stacee didn't know about because Paul had lied to Dennis, saying Stacee would be there. Confused, Stacee headed for The Bourbon.

When he arrived, he was greeted by Patricia Whitmore's group of protestors and recognized her as Patty. It was then that Lonny realized he also recognized her, from a photo on an Arsenal album; she was exposed in front of everyone as having been an Arsenal fan.

The story she'd previously told about the 'girl she knew' had been about her. A somewhat-disguised Patricia attended an Arsenal concert at the very end of the movie; Stacee Jaxx had rejoined the band and they were performing the song Drew wrote for Sherrie, which was actually "Don't Stop Believin'".
