Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What famous child star was originally the first choice for the role of Dorothy?

Answer: Shirley Temple

Shirley Temple was the original choice, but the people in charge of casting decided that Temple was still a little too young to play such a deep and serious role.
2. Margaret Hamilton played the role of which character?

Answer: The Wicked Witch of the West

Margaret Hamilton was the choice for the witch. For her green pigment, copper was added to her face and hands. Remember the scene in Munchkinland where she comes to warn Dorothy? When she disappeared into the floor, some of the flames burned her face and hands to the second and third degree, mainly because of the copper being such a good conductor of heat.
3. Dorothy's slippers were not originally ruby, but what color?

Answer: silver

The screenwriter decided that Dorothy's silver slippers would look too plain against the yellow brick road, especially in the new glory of technicolor. The shoes were changed to ruby. Dorothy had a few different pairs, one for the walking and skipping, one for the dance numbers and one for running.
4. Besides the role of Professor Marvel and the Wizard of Oz, what three other roles did Frank Morgan have?

Answer: The guard, the doorman, and the cabbie.

Frank Morgan played the Wizard, the cabbie, the guard, the doorman and Professor Marvel. It is said that the costume designers had quite a time finding "just the right jacket" to fit Morgan as the Professor. As they were looking through coats in an old warehouse, they found the right one. Morgan tried it on and it was a perfect fit. Later on, he reached in the pocket and pulled out a slip of paper with a name on it. That name? L.F. Baum.
5. What is the name of the director who was given credit for directing "The Wizard Of Oz"?

Answer: Victor Fleming

He also directed "Gone With The Wind".
6. What kind of flower puts Dorothy, Toto and the Lion to sleep just before reaching Emerald City?

Answer: poppies

Glinda wakes them up with a snow shower.
7. Munchkinland is where Dorothy landed.

Answer: True

Emerald City is the capital of Oz.
8. What color was the coroner's outfit?

Answer: blue

Ther coroner examines The Witch of the East after Dorothy's house landed on her, and "she's not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead."
9. What dance number was cut out of the final copy of the movie because it was too long?

Answer: The Jitterbug

The Jitterbug was deleted, though many people know the song and how it goes. The Jitterbug was supposed to be a dance that entranced the foursome and made them easier to catch... kind of like the whole poppy thing. If you watch the movie closely, just as the Witch is sending out the monkeys to the Haunted Forest to get the foursome, she throws in a line about "sending a little bug ahead to help them along". That line was never deleted.
10. What other top film did "The Wizard Of Oz" have to compete with for the Academy Awards?

Answer: Gone with the Wind

"The Wizard Of Oz" had to compete with "Gone with the Wind" at the box office, and ultimately, "Gone with the WInd" took home more Oscars.
