Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which movie icon made his breakthrough performance in "Stagecoach" as the Ringo Kid?

Answer: John Wayne

Wikipedia says Wayne became "an instant superstar" after his appearance in "Stagecoach", but the actor claims to have acted in 80 Westerns between 1930 and 1939, when "Stagecoach" was released. But it would only be in 1969, 30 years later, that Wayne would finally be considered good enough to win an Oscar, as Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit".
2. The story in "Stagecoach" is about the events on a regularly-scheduled stage run in the 1880s on the stretch between Tonto, Arizona Territory, and another frontier town. What was the destination for that particular day?

Answer: Lordsburg

Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Monument Valley. In the film, when Curly, the Marshal, hears that Buck has seen Luke Plummer in Lordsburg, he announces that he will ride shotgun. And as the stage is about to set out from Tonto, Buck, the stage driver, announces the stops as Dry Fork, Indian Wells, and Lee Ferry, before arrival in Lordsburg.
3. As the stage sets out from Tonto, a Cavalry lieutenant warns that the Indians are on the warpath in the area the stage will pass through. Can you identify the tribe at war and the name of their leader?

Answer: Apaches led by Geronimo

When Curly is apprised of the danger by the lieutenant, Curly asks, "What's the trouble, Lieutenant?", and the lieutenant answers, "Geronimo." Earlier, at a Cavalry post, the telegraph line to Lordsburg was cut after a single word had been received. The word was "Geronimo." And when Curly asks Dallas if she wants to stay in Tonto, Dallas looks at the representatives of the Ladies' League of Decency and says pointedly, "There's worse things than Apaches." Later in the film, just before reaching Lordsburg, the stage falls under attack by the Apaches.
4. As Doc Boone is having one last drink for the road before embarking on the stage to Lordsburg in "Stagecoach", he is delighted to be introduced to a fellow traveler whose occupation is what?

Answer: liquor salesman

Throughout the story, Doc Boone possessively guards the salesman's sample case and has a bottle of liquor in his hand in most scenes.
5. Buck, the stage driver in "Stagecoach", was a character actor known for his distinctive raspy voice, who may also be remembered as Roy Rogers' sidekick Cookie in ten movies. Who was this veteran of over 400 films?

Answer: Andy Devine

Devine's raspy voice threatened to be a detriment in his sound film career, but instead it turned into his trademark, as he became a popular comic figure over 45 years on the silver screen. His character of Jingles on "Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" (on both TV and film at the same time) was basically the same type as "Stagecoach's" Buck. Beginning in 1955, while the "Hickok" series was still on, Devine also began hosting a children's TV show called "Andy's Gang".
6. Having escaped from prison, Ringo Kid is picked up by the stage en route after his horse has gone lame. Why is Ringo determined to get to Lordsburg?

Answer: to exact revenge on Luke Plummer for the murder of his father and brother

After Ringo killed one of the Plummers' hired hands, so the story goes, Luke Plummer murdered Ringo's father and brother. Having escaped from prison, the Kid is determined to kill Luke, even if he also has to face the other two Plummer brothers.
7. What classic Western movie scenario takes place in "Stagecoach" just before the stage reaches its final destination in Lordsburg?

Answer: The Cavalry rescues the stage from an Apache war party.

Ringo has the shoot-out with the Plummers after the stage reaches Lordsburg and, at least in this movie, John Wayne does not ride off alone into the sunset. The stage is never robbed by outlaws. As the Apaches are ready to capture the stage and the marshal and passengers have run out of bullets, and Hatfield, the Southern gentleman played by John Carradine, is about to use his last bullet on Lucy Mallory to save her from the Apaches, we hear the trumpet call as the Cavalry arrives to save the stage and drive off the war party.
8. Which passenger is arrested by the sheriff when the stage arrives in Lordsburg?

Answer: Henry Gatewood, the banker

Gatewood, who looks down on the rest of the passengers, is absconding with $50,000 meant to be deposited in the bank in Tonto. No doubt the wealthiest of all the passengers and the one from society's highest class, Gatewood turns out to be the least honorable.
9. Which passenger is the only white to be wounded fatally in the Apache attack?

Answer: Hatfield, the former Confederate soldier

Many who've watched the film see Hatfield's death as a symbol of the end of the Confederacy's ante-bellum way of life and/or the South's chivalric demise. Peacock is the first to be wounded and when he gets the arrow in the chest it is a signal in the film that the Apache attack has begun.
10. My wife enjoys pointing out the circle method when used in movies we watch together. In what sense does "Stagecoach" make use of the circle method, whereby the film's ending returns to a situation or scene from the film's beginning?

Answer: two riders riding together

As the film opens, we see two horsemen riding at full speed toward the camera. They have come to warn the cavalry about depredations of Apaches, roused up by Geronimo, on the frontier around Lordsburg. The movie's final scene shows Ringo and Dallas riding a buckboard together into the sunset toward Ringo's ranch across the border.
