Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Reverend Gray and his wife, Harriet, are caring for orphan John Kenyon. What relation is John to Reverend Gray?

Answer: nephew

In the opening narration, John says that after his parents died, he went to live with his Aunt Harriet (Ellen Drew) who was married to the pastor (Joel McCrea). That makes the pastor John's uncle by marriage, but they have a bond that is more like father and son. Dean Stockwell plays the young John Kenyon, but the narration is provided by Marshall Thompson, who starred in the successful TV drama "Daktari".
2. With which citizen of Walesburg does Reverend Gray seem to have the most conflict?

Answer: Doctor Daniel Harris, Jr.

When the elder Doc Harris (Lewis Stone) passes away, his son (James Mitchell) takes over the doctoring duties for Walesburg. The irreligious younger man doesn't seem to have the warmth or bedside manner of his father and seems to take particular umbrage with Reverend Gray, who the doctor sees as unnecessary in treating people's woes.
3. What actress plays Faith Samuels, the local schoolteacher?

Answer: Amanda Blake

Faith becomes the love interest of young Doc Harris and seems to have a way to thaw his icy personality. They start to see each other, even going out in the countryside picnicking, but Faith will not make a commitment when asked by the young physician. Amanda Blake went on to star in the long-running TV western "Gunsmoke". James Arness, her co-star on "Gunsmoke" is also in this movie playing the eldest son of Jed Isbell, a local farmer.
4. The local general store owner and mine operator, Lon Backett, is interested in mining what mineral on Uncle Famous's land?

Answer: mica

Backett (Ed Begley), knowing a rich vein of mica runs onto Uncle Famous's property, at fist attempts to purchase Famous's property offering ever increasing amounts, but Famous (Juano Hernandez) is not interested in selling at any price. He values his farm second only to his freedom, implying that he was once a slave. Backett then resorts to Ku Klux Klan style terrorism to try to force Famous off the land.
5. What unusual given name does the character surnamed Wiggins have?

Answer: Chloroform

This was not a nickname, it was the character's actual name. The narration explains that when Chloroform's mother was in the hospital, she heard the term and liked it so much, she named her son for the anesthetic. Chloroform (Arthur Hunnicutt) was not very bright and is bullied by some of the town's young bucks. Reverend Gray soon puts a stop to that.
6. What is unusual about Jed Isbell's large family of children?

Answer: They are all boys.

Jed was a good friend of Reverend Gray. They had been pals during the Civil War when they served in the Army. Jed had five sons, all with platinum blond hair. Reverend Gray commented that Jed Isbell was all a man should be - with one exception - he could not be persuaded to come to church services.
7. What disease mysteriously appears and terrorizes Walesburg?

Answer: typhoid fever

John Kenyon was the first to show symptoms, but the disease quickly spreads through the community, affecting mostly the children and Faith Samuels. The townspeople are at first at a loss to find the source of the outbreak. The town places itself in quarantine, so one attends church and the Gray family begins to suffer because of that.
8. What turns out to be the source of the infection?

Answer: The school well

Because so may children were affected, the school's well is first suspect, but because John is infected before school starts, it baffles the townspeople. Once John recovers, he tells Gray that he and one of the Isbell kids were playing around the schoolyard one day and did drink out of the well there. Doctor Harris and Reverend Gray quickly take steps to seal off the contaminated well.
9. What finally persuades Jed Isbell to come to church?

Answer: He sees how Reverend Gray handles a lynch mob.

The men of Walesburg are not happy that Uncle Famous will not sell his land so they can mine there. They decide to hang him and take the land. A lynch mob, led by Lon Backett and disguised in Ku Klux Klan robes, arrives at Famous's home. Reverend Gray steps in and reads what he indicates is Uncle Famous's will.

It makes the men ashamed when they hear the preacher's words and they melt away. Famous's will turns out to be just blank paper; Gray used psychology to turn away the mob's wrath. Isbell, who had been waiting concealed in the brush with a gun in case things turned ugly, is amazed at the power the preacher had over the mob using just words and not weapons.

He comes to the very next church service.
10. What well-known character actor portrayed Jed Isbell?

Answer: Alan Hale

Hale had dozens of roles in mainly action adventure movies like "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1939), "Destination Tokyo" (1943) and "Whiplash" (1948). His look-alike son, Alan Hale, Jr. was also an actor and is probably best known for portraying the Skipper on the long-running TV sit-com "Gilligan's Island".

The elder Hale passed away in 1950 just a few weeks before his 57th birthday. "Stars in My Crown" was one of his last films.
