Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Vito Andolini entered this country as a child, what was the family name of the people who watched over him and also later gave him a job as a apprentice in their grocery store?

Answer: Abbandando

He arrived in this country alone and as was the Italian custom, he was embraced by others from the same town of Corleone who arrived in America before. Young Vito was thought to be dumb, but it was soon realized that he was just a quiet and watchful boy. This boy saw so much in Sicily in this early part of his young life... he was to see much more.
2. When Fredo had pneumonia, what was put on his chest, under the glass, to "draw" out the poison?

Answer: a leech

This is a carnivorous bloodsucking, freshwater annelid worm that my own grandmother used when someone had some sort of infection to draw out the poison. It would usually be placed on the area of the body that was infected and then they would put a small glass over it to hold it in place. Sometimes, they would burn it with a match and it usually worked!
3. Who was the Catholic saint being honored during the Italian feast where young Vito Corleone tracked Fanucci?

Answer: St. Rocco

A street fair or Italian "feast" would be another word for these celebrations. Food, games of chance and such. Vito chose this time and place to take care of the problem of Fanucci.
4. When young Vito was trying to explain to Tessio and Clemenza why they should not have to pay Fanucci, he mentioned two other men who were not paying Fanucci, someone "from Second Avenue", who?

Answer: Joe "the Greek"

He tried to emphasize to them that they didn't "have" to pay Fanucci. They explained to him that the big boss, Maranzalla, was behind Fanucci, but Vito felt that it could be dealt with, that others did not pay and still lived and that they could too.
5. On one occasion, Clemenza brought Vito into what appeared to be a warehouse where a man was selling hand guns. While Clemenza and a few other men picked up the guns and examined them, Vito watched. At one point the proprietor asked his young son, who was up on the second level open loft, to play a song that he liked on his flute, for them. The boy did. What was this boy's name?

Answer: Carmino

Watching Clemenza handle the guns, Vito now knew the way he must succeed in America.
6. Clemenza introduced Vito to another young man whose name reminded Vito of someone who once (fixed) the World Series. Vito changed his name, right then and there. Who did that other young man turn out to be?

Answer: Hyman Roth

The families were being formed.
7. What was the name of Vito Corleone's first Consigliere?

Answer: Genco Abbandando

This was Vito's closest friend. It is only natural that Vito would have made him his most trusted advisor. They worked beside each other in the grocery store until that had to end because Fanucci forced the proprietor to hire his nephew.
8. What were Vito, Clemenza and Tessio selling when Fanucci asked them to allow him to "wet his beak"?

Answer: ladies' dresses

There was little that went on in that neighborhood that Fanucci was not aware of.
9. Vito's wife introduced a woman to Vito. She felt sorry for this woman as she was about to get evicted from her apartment because she had a dog. What was the woman's name?

Answer: Signora Columbo

All this woman had was the neighborhood and she was deeply ashamed at the thought of getting evicted. That was a disgrace in itself. The thinking then was that Vito Corleone was quickly being respected in the neighborhood and treated like a true Padrone "Godfather".
10. Where was Signore Roberto (the landlord) when Vito first watched him through a window?

Answer: in a barber's chair

Vito felt that "reasoning" with this man, or anyone, was the first choice. Always. He would make him a fair offer... that he couldn't refuse.
11. After realizing who Don Vito was, how much did Signore Roberto lower the rent for Signora Corleone's ladyfriend?

Answer: $10

Signore Roberto was absolutely petrified once he found out who Vito Corleone was. He was contrite and apologetic and very amusing to Vito and Genco as they granted him audience in the front room of the store.
12. What was the name of the of the legitimate business that belonged to Vito and his comrades?

Answer: Genco Olive Oil

They all stood outside and admired the awning on their store. God Bless America! Vito had already come a long way.
13. What was the first and last name of the man who's face is the first you see on the screen when "Godfather I" opens up?

Answer: Amerigo Bonasera

Don Corleone's presence was imposing. These men stood before him and asked favors all the while realizing that if called upon, they would have to repay.
14. What is the title of the song that Johnny Fontaine sang to Connie, the bride?

Answer: I Have But One Heart

Italian weddings are fun and this one looked glorious. A beautiful sunny day... lots of music... and a superstar in attendance.
15. What was the name of Jack Woltz' horse?

Answer: Khartoum

I think "they" managed to convince Jack Woltz to give Johnny Fontaine the part in the war movie that he longed for.
16. What was Tom Hagen carrying when he exited the department store, after Christmas shopping, when Virgil Solozzo intercepted and kidnapped him?

Answer: a sled

Solozzo knew Sonny was leaning toward the deal he dangled before the Don. Even though the Don refused, Solozzo imagined he had a solution and needed Tom Hagen to present it.
17. Outside the hospital, what was the cop's first name who was ordered by Captain McCluskey to take Michael Corleone in?

Answer: Phil

McCluskey hit Michael so fiercely that he broke his jaw. He was in a rage that protection was sent from the Mall for Don Corleone while he was in the hospital.
18. What was Apollonia's family name?

Answer: Vitelli

This beautiful, innocent girl hit Michael with the "thunderbolt". He was in hiding in Sicily and therefore had to give up any plans he had had in the States with Kay. He did not know when, if ever, he could go back.
19. After that explosion, when Apollonia was killed, when Michael woke up, what did he order Don Tomassino to do?

Answer: "Get me Fabrizio"

The explosion killed Apollonia. Seconds before, Michael saw Fabrizio heading toward the gate, he called out, Fabrizio turned but kept walking, in fact, sped up. Michael knew, right then...
20. When Fabrizio was finally found and killed in America, what kind of business was he in?

Answer: pizza

The Sicilian vendetta.
