Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Sydney Wells?

Answer: Jessica Alba

Sydney was a classical violinist, a patient of Paul Faulkner, and the main character of this film.

Our "Dark Angel", Jessica Alba, played Sydney Wells in this remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film. The movie also starred Parker Posey as Helen Wells (Sydney's sister), Alessandro Nivola as Dr. Paul Faulkner (Sydney's therapist), and Chloë Moretz as Alicia Milstone (a young girl with a tumor Sydney befriends at the hospital). Mrs. Alba released two other movies the year she released this one (2008). They were "Meet Bill" (released before) and "The Love Guru" (released after).
2. What was different about Sydney?

Answer: She was blind.

Sydney had been blinded at the age of five. She and her sister had been playing with fireworks, and they had been set off too close to Sydney's face. The result had damaged her corneas. That's why in the film, she was undergoing a cornea transplant.
3. What happened to Sydney's mother?

Answer: Her mother wasn't mentioned.

Sydney's mother wasn't mentioned throughout the film. We were told she had a sister named Helen, but not about either of her parents. Her sister was featured a lot in the beginning of the film when Sydney was undergoing her surgery and coming home for the first time.
4. What color were the hospital bandages on Sydney's eyes, after she woke up from her surgery?

Answer: white

Sydney woke up in the hospital with white bandages on her eyes. The only sound was the sound of the machines helping the old woman in the bed next to her breathe. The first person she spoke to was Alicia, the girl with the tumor, but sometime (we're not shown) Sydney made friends with the woman in the bed next to her, because Sydney called her out by name when she saw her being taken away by shadow people.
5. How did Alicia describe her tumor when she first met Sydney in the hospital?

Answer: "It's size of a golf ball."

When Alicia first met Sydney, Sydney made a comment about Alicia's age. Soon after, Alicia said she was in the hospital because she "got so dizzy [she] couldn't ride [her] bike". This, apparently, was because of the golf ball sized tumor in her skull.

Unfortunately, Alicia later died (after everybody got attached to her!). Sydney saw her dead, and Alicia told her that they got the tumor out. She then walked away to be taken by shadow people.
6. Did Sydney see people on fire at any point in the movie?

Answer: Yes

There was a scene where she was lying on her couch dreaming, and she saw herself in what looked like a restaurant kitchen. Fire was everywhere and people were running around with their clothes on fire. She then saw a girl in a burning RV before flashing to an image of a girl with bleeding eyes before waking up.
7. What did Sydney see with her new eyes throughout the whole movie?

Answer: Dead people and spirits.

Sydney repeatedly saw visions once she got her new eyes. She thought they were from the past, but realized by the end of the film that they were premonitions of the future too. At one point, she and a woman walked toward each other and the woman walked through her. Both girls looked at each other, shocked, until Sydney realized that the woman was dead on the side of the street and the thing that just walked through her was only a spirit. Every time Sydney looked in the mirror, she saw her cornea donor, not herself.

When she saw a picture of the real her, she didn't even know who it is.
8. What was Sydney's cornea donor's name?

Answer: Ana Cristina Martinez

Rosa Martinez was the mother of Sydney's donor, Ana Cristina Martinez. Paul drove Sydney to Mexico at the risk of losing his medical license to help find out what Sydney kept seeing. There they met Rosa, where she immediately saw her daughter's eyes in Sydney. The shadow people attacked Rosa and she ended up dying before Paul and her house assistant could get her to the hospital.
9. How did Ana die?

Answer: She hung herself.

She was constantly being accused of being a witch because, like Sydney, she had premonitions of people dying. When she knew someone was going to die, she went and sat in front of their house and just cried because she could do nothing about it. The townspeople ended up realizing that every house she cried in front of ended up losing a person in it. That was why they started accusing her of being a witch.

The beginning of the film showed children throwing rocks at her house as she hung herself in the basement.
10. What were the children screaming at Ana at the beginning of the film?

Answer: "¡Bruja!"

"Bruja" means "witch" in Spanish. "Mal" means "evil", "mujer" means "woman", and "medio" means "mean". This was also written on the crumbled stone walls around Ana's home. The children and Ana all lived in Mexico. Though they knew Ana could predict deaths, they refused to listen to her.

They always just called her a witch and were mean to her. The reason she hung herself was that she felt bad. Nobody would listen to her and people kept dying, and Ana felt it was her fault. When Sydney saved the crowd of people at the end of the movie, it let Ana rest in peace because Sydney did it with her eyes.
