Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "One has to ask some very _______ favors in the job I have."

Answer: strange

Said by Roger Bartlett. In this case, the strange favor was asked of Virgil Hilts. He asked Hilts to escape, survey the land, and then turn himself in so he could give the people who wanted to escape that information.
2. "Afraid this tea is pathetic. I must have used those wretched leaves about twenty times. It's not that I mind so much. Tea without milk is so _______."

Answer: uncivilized

Said by Collin Blythe. He's a great tea-drinker and says this when he's first meeting his bunkmate, Bob Hendley. Hendley says he's only had tea once, and that was when he was in a hospital.
3. "Oh my God, they found _______."

Answer: Tom

Said by Andy MacDonald. In the middle of an Independence Day celebration, the soldiers at the camp discover one of the tunnels that had been built - the tunnel they had christened "Tom".
4. "I haven't seen Berlin yet, from the ground or from the air; and I plan on doing both before _________."

Answer: the war is over

Said by Virgil Hilts. He says this to Colonel Von Luger, clearly expressing that he intends to keep trying to escape. These escape attempts eventually earned Hilts the nickname "The Cooler King."
5. "How many you taking out?" "_________." "_________? You're crazy. You ought to be locked up. _________ guys, just walking down the road like that?"

Answer: 250

Said by Virgil Hilts and Roger Bartlett. Bartlett tries to recruit Hilts into their plan by using him as an explorer so he can find out what's beyond the camp. Hilts thinks the plan is crazy, but agrees to help dig the tunnel.
6. "Thank you for _______ me out."

Answer: getting

Said by Collin Blythe to Bob Hendley, just before he dies on the hilltop.
7. "Hold on to yourself, Bartlett. You're _______ feet short." "What do you mean, _______ feet short?" "You're _______ feet short of the woods. The hole is right here out in open. The guard is between us and the lights."

Answer: twenty

Said by Virgil Hilts and Roger Bartlett. The tunnel was meant to reach to the woods, where the men could escape into the trees, but the tunnel, when finished, was twenty feet short, so the men had to run for it, one by one.
8. "Kommodant Von Luger, it is the sworn duty of all _______ to try to escape."

Answer: officers

Said by Rupert Ramsey. Colonel Von Luger had tried to get Ramsey to put an end to the escape attempts, but Ramsey gave him this answer.
9. "Roger's idea was to get back at the Germans the hardest way he could, mess up the works. From what we've heard here, I think he did exactly that." "Do you think it was worth the price, sir?" "Well, it all depends on ________, Hendley."

Answer: your point of view

Said by Rupert Ramsey and Bob Hendley. Only a few of the seventy-six men that escaped actually made it to freedom. Fifty of them were shot, and twelve of them were recaptured and sent back to the camp.
10. "We have in effect put all our rotten eggs in one basket. And we intend to _______ this basket carefully."

Answer: watch

Said by Colonel Von Luger. The camp was created to hold the men who had made the most escape attempts. Fortunately for the soldiers, this meant that all the men who were escape experts were all together in one place, so it was easy for the prisoners to plan escapes.
