Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Clopin was telling the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame to the children, what was Judge Claude Frollo first going to do with the infant Quasimodo?

Answer: Drown him in a well

Frollo killed Quasimodo's mother on the steps of Notre Dame while she was running away. When Frollo realized the bundle she was carrying was a child and not stolen goods, Frollo was going to drown the disfigured child. The archdeacon stopped him from killing the child. Frollo had Quasimodo held in the bell tower of Notre Dame and became his master.
2. Quasimodo was befriended by three gargoyles that came to life named Laverne, Victor and... What was the name of the third?

Answer: Hugo

The three gargoyles were only seen coming to life when around Quasimodo. They were instrumental in getting Quasimodo to leave Notre Dame. Laverne referred to Hugo as the "fat, stupid one with a big mouth". The gargoyles were put into the Disney movie based on a line in the book that mentions the statues being friends with Quasimodo.

Laverne was voiced by Mary Wickes.
Victor was voiced by Charles Kimborough.
Hugo was voiced by Jason Alexander.
3. What was the name of the festival that the gargoyles tried to talk Quasimodo into attending?

Answer: Fools

Quasimodo liked to watch the festival from his place in the bell tower. The gargoyles urged him to go, but Frollo ordered Quasimodo not to attend the festival because he was ugly and deformed. When Quasimodo accidentally ended up in the middle of the festival, he was crowned King of the Fools.
4. What actress voiced the gypsy, Esmerelda?

Answer: Demi Moore

A husky voiced actress was wanted for the voice of the gypsy named Esmerelda. Demi Moore was chosen. She tried her singing voice, but decided Disney should go with someone else to sing Esmerelda's songs. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" was Demi's first time voicing an animated Disney character. Demi voiced the role of Esmerelda, a gypsy who owned a goat named Djali. Quasimodo met her when he was accidentally pushed into her tent during the Festival of Fools.
5. After escaping into Notre Dame, did Esmerelda request sanctuary?

Answer: No

Captain Phoebus wanted Esmerelda to ask for sanctuary so he wouldn't have to arrest her. When Frollo entered Notre Dame to watch Captain Phoebus arrest Esmerelda, Phoebus lied to him and said Esmerelda requested sanctuary and therefore couldn't be touched. Quasimodo helped Esmerelda escape Notre Dame and in return she gave him a necklace that showed where he could find her and the other gypsies.
6. Esmerelda watched as Phoebus was sentenced to death by Frollo. What infraction did Frollo say was the reason Phoebus was to be put to death?

Answer: Insubordination

Phoebus wouldn't burn the house down of a family that helped anyone who asked for help. Frollo called that insubordination and was going to have Phoebus killed on the spot. Esmerelda helped Phoebus get away and Quasimodo hid an injured Phoebus in the bell tower of Notre Dame while he recovered.
7. Using Esmerelda's necklace, Quasimodo and Phoebus were able to find the place where Esmerelda lived. What did the gypsies call their home?

Answer: Court of Miracles

Phoebus and Quasimodo were able to find the entrance to the Court of Miracles in a crypt. It led to the catacombs underneath the city. The gypsies caught Phoebus and Quasimodo in the catacombs and were going to hang them when Esmerelda stopped them. Unbeknownst to Phoebus or Quasimodo, Frollo followed them and arrested Esmerelda and Phoebus. Quasimodo was chained in the bell tower.
8. After capturing Esmerelda, how was Frollo planning on killing her?

Answer: Burn at the stake

Quasimodo had been chained by Frollo in the bell tower of Notre Dame and the gargoyles tried to talk him into helping Esmerelda and Phoebus. When Quasimodo saw what Frollo was doing to Esmerelda he broke out of the chains and grabbed Esmerelda after swinging down from the tower and scooping her up.
9. Quasimodo believed that his mother had abandoned him on the steps of Notre Dame. Was the truth ever revealed to him?

Answer: Yes

In a rage, Frollo told Quasimodo that the mother Quasimodo believed had abandoned him had actually been killed by Frollo. Quasimodo was shocked at the truth and Frollo took that opportunity to try throwing Quasimodo off the balcony. Quasimodo took Frollo with him over the balcony, but Quasimodo survived while Frollo fell to his death.
10. In what city did "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" take place?

Answer: Paris

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" took place in the city of Paris. Clopin was the first to acknowledge where the movie took place when he sang the name of the city in the opening song "The Bells of Notre Dame".
