Martha is the first person to see Ethan striding toward his brother's family's cabin. Aaron is the first to call him by name, and the children are told by their older sister Lucy that the approaching man is "Uncle Ethan."

Answer: False

Ethan found Martin, then just a baby, amidst the carnage, and brought him to live with Aaron's family.

After shooting down one of the approaching Comanche, Martin impulsively throws down his gun and buries his head in his arm, in apparent sickness at his actions. The feeling passes, however, and he's soon firing into the war party just as wildly as Ethan.
