Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'So now, did they put your suitcase in the wrong pile? It's just -- upstairs -- weren't you under the R stand? I thought I saw you there.'

Answer: Meredith Logue

This scene takes place in the train station when Tom first arrives in Italy. When he and Meredith meet, he pretends to be Dickie Greenleaf but she is observant enough to notice that he was 'traveling under 'R' and questions him about it.
2. 'Who? Oh, Tom, hello, how are you? We thought you'd disappeared. We were going to send out a search party.'

Answer: Dickie Greenleaf

This is Dickie's greeting when he finds that Tom has come over to have lunch with Marge at her house, a few days after all three of them met on the beach.
3. 'I don't care for B.S. I don't care to hear it. I don't care to speak it.'

Answer: Mr. MacCarron (the detective hired by Mr. Greenleaf)

After Tom's attempt to make idle small talk with the American detective, Mr. MacCarron cuts to the chase with this remark and immediately begins shedding some light on Dickie's shady background.
4. 'Is it on 'delle Croce, just off the Corso'? You're a quick study, aren't you? Last time you didn't know your a** from your elbow, now you're giving me directions.'

Answer: Freddie Miles

In this scene, Freddie is mocking Tom and making it clear to him that he knows Tom is somehow involved in Dickie's recent disappearance. Unfortunately for him, this leads to Freddie's rather untimely demise.
5. 'You've got such great taste, I don't know. Most of the thugs at Princeton had tasted everything and had no taste. I used to say, the cream of America: rich and thick.'

Answer: Dickie Greenleaf

Dickie is trying to get Tom to admit that he never went to Princeton by talking down about the alumni -- he follows this quote with: 'Freddie's the perfect example.'
6. 'The thing with Dickie -- it's like the sun shines on you and it's glorious, then he forgets you and it's very, very cold.'

Answer: Marge Sherwood

In this quote, Marge explains her fiance's wayward nature as she tries to make Tom feel better about being virtually ignored by Dickie following Freddie's arrival.
7. 'Actually, I really, really, really don't want to be on this boat with you. I can't move without you moving, which is exactly how it feels and it gives me the creeps.'

Answer: Dickie Greenleaf

These are a few of Dickie's last words -- moments later in this scene, he is bludgeoned to death by Tom.
8. 'The truth is, if you've had money your entire life, even if you despise it, which we do -- agreed? -- you're only truly comfortable around other people who have it and despise it.'

Answer: Meredith Logue

After meeting up again with 'Dickie' in Rome, Meredith confides in him, not realizing that she is actually speaking with Tom Ripley -- who has murdered and assumed the identity of the real Dickie Greenleaf.
9. 'I don't know why people say this country's civilized. It isn't. It's primitive.'

Answer: Dickie Greenleaf

These are Dickie's comments after Silvana's death-- he is disgusted by the fact that it took the ambulance over an hour to show up and kicks over the small table with the record player on it.
10. 'Tom is not a nobody. Tom has secrets he doesn't want to tell me, and I wish he would.'

Answer: Peter Smith-Kingsley

Once again, here are some of the final words of a Ripley victim -- in this quote, Peter Smith-Kingsley is trying to come up with some 'good things' about Tom Ripley, unaware that in a few moments, he too will be killed.
11. 'I could (have sex with) this icebox, I love it so much.'

Answer: Dickie Greenleaf

Dickie's comments about the icebox that Marge persuaded him to buy with the money his father is sending to Tom -- at first, he wanted to use the money for a car.
12. 'Why do I think there's never been a Ripley rainy day?'

Answer: Marge Sherwood

These are a few of Marge's parting words to Tom in Venice. Now fully convinced that he is responsible for Dickie's death, she screams at him a few minutes later in this scene.
13. 'I've gotten to like it. I've gotten to like everything about the way you live. It's one big love affair. If you knew my life back home in New York...'

Answer: Tom Ripley

This is as close as Tom gets to admitting the 'love' he feels for Dickie...but in this scene, Dickie is paying more attention to the drum set in the jazz band than he is to Tom.
14. 'And his passport photo? Did you hear? To scratch out your own face like that - can you imagine the frame of mind you'd have to be in?'

Answer: Herbert Greenleaf

In this scene, Dickie's father, Herbert, is saddened and disappointed by what has seemed to have happened to his son -- but he is not altogether surprised, since he is well aware that Dickie had violent inclinations.
15. 'Whatever you do, however terrible, however hurtful - it all makes sense, doesn't it? inside your head. You never meet anybody who thinks they're a bad person or that they're cruel.'

Answer: Tom Ripley

Though most WOULD consider Tom a 'bad person' because of the things he has done, this quote still rings true -- most people consider themselves inherently good, no matter what.
