quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who introduces the, if you will, "rockumentary"?

Answer: Marty Di Bergi

Marty Di Bergi is played by Rob Reiner who was also the film's director.
2. Which of the following is not a Spinal Tap album?

Answer: Devil's Avocado

"Devil's Avocado" has yet to be released by anyone, let alone Spinal Tap. "Shark Sandwich", "Intravenus de Milo" and "Rock n Roll Creation" were all pictured in the scene where the band's reviews were discussed with Marty. 'That's just nit-picking isn't it.'
3. According to Jeanine what is the band's star-sign?

Answer: Virgo

After assuming management of the band Janine presents each of the band with an astrologically charted tour itinerary and states 'As you know the band's star-sign is Virgo. You see Saturn's in the third house and it's a bit rocky. But because Virgo is the most highly intelligent of all the signs of the Zodiac we're going to pull through this with great aplomb'.
Derek Smalls' star-sign is Cancer, Viv Savage is a Libran whilst Nigel is a Capricorn.
4. What musical adaptation was Elvis due to perform as a TV special from Graceland shortly before his death according to Derek Smalls?

Answer: Somebody Up There Likes Me

The film "Somebody Up There Likes Me" from 1956 was directed by Robert Wise as were the other three titles. As he also directed "West Side Story" and "The Sound Of Music", a musical adaptation of one of his other films could sound almost plausible. Almost.
5. Upon arrival at JFK Airport the band's chauffeur awaits them holding a hand-written sign in order to identify himself to the band. What does it say?

Answer: Spinal Pap

As we find out a later on, the chauffeur, Tommy Pischedda, has no interest in rock n roll. He is more interested in "showbiz" entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. "When you've loved and lost the way Frank has then you know what life's about".

The mistake could well have been deliberate. It was Lt. Hookstratten who mistakenly called them Spinal Tarp when greeting them at the Air Base.
6. In a case of life (almost) imitating art, when ace session drummer Jeff Porcaro passed away in 1992 intital reports suggested he had died in a bizarre gardening accident. Had this been the case he would have shared the same fate as which of Spinal Tap's many unfortunate sticksmen?

Answer: John "Stumpy" Pepys

Yes, Jeff Porcaro did die in the garden but not due to an allergic reaction to pesticides as was first thought. The coroner's report subsequently concluded that death was due to a heart attack caused by a prolonged use of cocaine which had hardened his arteries.
John "Stumpy" Pepys "choked on somebody else's vomit" and Peter "James" Bond spontaneously combusted. At the end of the film Joe "Mama" Besser replaces Mick Shrimpton who also spontaneously combusted despite insisting that his chances of survival must be good.
7. What was the name of the first song that David and Nigel wrote together?

Answer: All The Way Home

"All The Way Home" was, according to David 'Fairly simple. There was about six words in the whole song. Just repeating them over and over again.' That didn't prevent them from including it on 1992's "Break Like The Wind" album in the same way that the Beatles included their early favourite "The One After 909" on the "Let It Be" album.
8. If David and Nigel are 'fire and 'ice' then what is Derek?

Answer: luke warm water

Derek also refers to David and Nigel as 'two visionaries' and likens them to Shelley and Byron. In the same interview Marty Di Bergi concludes that Derek feels like a preserved moose when on stage.
9. Hello ________! The band is lost backstage at the Xanadu Star Theatre, but in which city?

Answer: Cleveland

The band eventually ask a janitor for directions which involve 'a little jog, about 30 feet'.
10. Which two comic actors play mime waiters at the tour launch party?

Answer: Dana Carvey & Billy Crystal

Dana Carvey's character doesn't have a name or a speaking part. Billy Crystal plays "Morty The Mime" and utters the immortal line 'Mime is money'. Bruno Kirby plays Tommy Pischedda, the chauffeur and, amongst many other TV and film credits, appeared in the very first episode of M*A*S*H in 1972. Mike Myers doesn't appear anywhere in the film.
11. Where, according to manager Ian Faith, is 'not a big college town'?

Answer: Boston

This was Ian's reason for the band not to concern themselves that the gig had been cancelled.
12. Spinal Tap are 'currently residing in the "where are they now file"' according to the DJ on what Memphis radio station?

Answer: Golden 106

The DJ's voice was provided by Harry Shearer who, in addition to his many credits on "The Simpsons" also played WPIG's Handsome Dan in "Wayne's World 2."
13. According to Jeanine what was the main problem causing "Smell The Glove"'s poor sales performance?

Answer: You couldn't hear the lyrics

Jeanine goes even further and suggests, somewhat immortally, 'You don't do 'eavy metal in Dubly do you?'.
She had previously suggested to David on the phone that his larynx was fat. It was Nigel who sarcastically suggested that perhaps David was using the wrong conditioner making his hair 'too frizzy'.
14. According to Nigel, 'girls run away at the size' of what in their trousers?

Answer: Armadillos

Derek Smalls had a cucumber wrapped in tin foil for his airport security prank.
15. What is the name of Spinal Tap's label in the film?

Answer: Polymer

The soundtrack album for "This Is Spinal Tap" was released on Polydor. After much deliberation over the cover, "Smell The Glove" was released on Polymer.
16. At the gig at Themeland Amusement Park in Stockton California, despite being lower on the bill, Tap are comforted to know that they have a larger dressing room than who?

Answer: The Puppet Show

The band had previously been supported on tour by Duke Fame ('people were still booing him when we came on')and shared a billing with The National Company Of "The Wiz" at the Chicago Holiday Inn.
17. In what year is the film set?

Answer: 1982

Whilst discussing "Smell The Glove"'s 'sexist' cover...
Ian Faith: 'This is 1982 for God's sake!'.
Bobbi Flekman: 'That's right. It's 1982. Get out of the sixties! People don't have that mentality any more'.
18. What, according to Nigel, is the saddest of all keys?

Answer: D Minor

Good taste precludes me from giving the title to you here, but who can forget Nigel's heartbreaking "mach-piece" trilogy in D minor?
19. Which song uniquely requires three bass guitars for its performance?

Answer: Big Bottom

'How could I leave this behind?'
20. A few name changes were required before Spinal Tap came into being. But what is the correct chronology?

Answer: Originals, New Originals, Thames Men

They never called themselves The Regulars. They discovered that there was already a band called the Originals and so changed their name to The New Originals. The original Originals then changed their name to The Regulars. The New Originals contemplated changing back but there didn't seem much point. They subsequently became The Thames Men.
21. The tagline used to advertise the film upon it's initial release was 'Does for rock and roll what "Jaws" did for swimming'. True or False?

Answer: False

The actual tagline was 'Does for rock and roll what "The Sound Of Music" did for hills'.
22. Who wrote "Jazz Odyssey"?

Answer: Derek Smalls

Had Nigel not quit the band leaving them with a 'cosy ten minutes' set the world would never have heard "Jazz Odyssey".
23. During the performance of which song does Nigel quit the band?

Answer: Sex Farm

He quit during the Lindbergh Air Force Base 'at ease weekend' gig.
24. At the end of tour party on an LA rooftop Derek Smalls and David St. Hubbins discuss using their new found spare time to resurrect some of the ideas that they'd previously shelved. Whose life was to be the subject of the musical they'd planned backstage at the Luton Palace?

Answer: Jack The Ripper

"Saucy Jack, you're a naughty one. Saucy Jack, you're a haughty one."
25. Which rock star, whilst on tour in the eighties, (allegedly) had a miniature fortress lowered on to the stage as a practical joke by his road crew during a particularly appropriate song?

Answer: Sting

Legend has it that Sting became completely obsessed by "This Is Spinal Tap" and had it on permanent rotation on his tour bus. The road crew decided to lower the miniature fortress onto the stage during "Fortress Around Your Heart" as a joke.
