Larry suggests that Owen go to a Hitchcock film to get an idea of what a good murder mystery would look like. While watching the film, Owen sees two men who both want someone dead. They devise a plan to do each other's murders so they can each establish an alibi and avoid being accused of the murder.

This eventually turns into Owen's plan of how to get rid of his mother. If Owen kills Larry's ex-wife, then Larry can kill Owen's mother, and neither one of them would ever be linked to the other man's murders. Criss cross!

Owen convinces Larry to come to his house to meet his overbearing mother, but during breakfast, they wake momma up. When momma demands to know who is sitting at her kitchen table, Owen replies, "This is cousin Patty. He's going to be staying with us for a while. Isn't that nice?"

This is actually said two and a half times in the film. Larry tells it to the creative writing class, Owen tells it to Larry near the end of the film, and Owen says half of it to his mother right before he imagines himself jamming a pair of scissors in her ear.

This is one of my favorite parts of the film. Poor Larry struggled and fretted for hours over the perfect word to start his novel, only to have Momma think of it in a heartbeat. Larry, filled with jealousy and rage, finally decides to kill her on the train.

Before leaving the house, Owen would hang a piece of black string from the door. When he returned, if the string was on the ground, he'd know that Larry killed his mother and left. Owen didn't want to be late getting to the bowling alley either. He would be charged an extra dollar if he was late.

While at Howie's Lanes, Owen visualizes himself rolling his blue bowling ball toward ten miniature versions of momma and getting a strike.

Owen thinks Momma is dead, but when he wakes her up and she yells his name, he says to her, "Momma! You're alive!" He then turns to two policeman, who look puzzled, and says to them, "Old people. You have to reassure them."

Margaret has supposedly stolen this novel from Larry and made a fortune from it. She even made it onto the Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about her book. Larry has tried to go on with life and write another book but cannot get past the first sentence. Meanwhile, Larry's agent has dropped Larry and has taken Margaret on as a new client. Talk about a slap in the face! Ouch!

When Owen lays his entire collection out, he says, "Nickel, nickel, quarter, quarter, penny." Although not worth much money, Owen's coin collection has more sentimental value than anything else. It consists of the money his dead father, Ned, let Owen keep, and it is one of the few things Owen has to remember his father by. A very touching moment in the film.
